  1. If you ask a dozen people who believe in chi what it is and how it works, you'll get 13 different answers. If your instructor says that chi is using good body mechanics to produce more power, then by all means develop your chi. If they say chi is a lifeforce that you develop by running sprints and lifting weights and eating a good diet, then by all means develop your chi. If chi is using breath and muscle tension to better aborb a strike, fine. If it starts to look like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eUDrs8IYevM this: this: or this: then it is not so good.
  2. Many arts with a lot of useful trapping range material have suffered because their practitioners do not use the art to fight, but rather just practice the art. If we look at these arts through the lens of "how can I use this to beat someone up?" we can find something special.
  3. You have been set upon the path of wisdom.
  4. Almost anything in a toolbox, the toolbox itself, broom, flashlight, large rocks, a lamp, vacuum cleaner, dumbells, candlestick, umbrella, bicycle, car, truck, fingernail file, chopsticks, shopping cart, golf club, golf balls, tennis racket, motorcycle helmet, shoelaces, dog leash, a poodle, canned food, tent stakes, wasp killing spray, chairs, barstool, incense burner, a fork. Of course, a legal concealed handgun or easily deployable folding knife would be better in most cases.
  5. Hooray for aging! Hope you enjoyed your dinner and such.
  6. The only way to not make mistakes is to not do anything.
  7. If you enjoy doing karate together, I wouldn't change a thing. In the long run, memories with his dad will be worth more than wrestling medals. Plus karate and wrestling will make him a more well rounded martial artist than strictly grappling.
  8. 4/16 Solo night. After seeing a hojo undo video, decided to do slow motion sinawali with 6 pound maces until my wrists refused to do more. Then one step drills and flowing with traditional Bujin weapons: sticks, bigger sticks, a staff, pointed stick, a bottle, butcher knife, pocket knife, African bullwhip, a pencil, sheet metal workers punch tool, 3 pound dumbell, ect..
  9. I believe the title was mistaken. He was asking about BJJ or Judo in the off-season to help with wrestling.
  10. This seems very appropriate.
  11. History and culture are not my strong points. What was wrong here? I'm sure there is a lot, being a show made for entertainment as much as information.
  12. Either art would be good for him. Meet both the coaches and go with the one who seems like they would be good at working with children.
  13. Don't forget, the UFC is entertainment. Audiences tire of seeing guys just grappling on the ground. Don't for a minute think that the UFC or other MMA events are purely just fighter to fighter contests. That may be, but for the most part, fighters want to win. And Pulver was a good boxer fighting someone who was a better grappler. He didn't want to grapple the guy.
  14. I remember a Jens Pulver fight that was a real showcase of the weakness of not having a strong striking background. It was a 15 minute sprawl-n-brawl clinic. Personally, I think it best to have at least a basic understanding of all ranges, then have a specialty later on. In early MMA, we did not see many high level TKD-type kickers doing well. Now we are starting to see it, difference is that now no one is completely ignorant of grappling and clinch ranges, so they are better able to dictate the range at which they fight.
  15. Sad that this is not more common. I think this is why I've become such a fan of the Dog Brothers. No keeping score, no trophies or prizes, and it's better to not throw a shot that would seriously hurt the other fighter, even if it means tapping out. I dislike the idea of fighting someone who considers winning more important than my well-being. I'm kind of a wimpy peace-loving hippy.
  16. There seems to be an either/or mentality among martial artists when it comes to live training and illegal technique. I've always maintained that this is just silly. You can't allow this stuff competitively, but it can be trained by sensible people with protective gear and pulled strikes. But I don't think there is much substitute for BJJ. Maybe Sambo or Judo. Cheating can help in a ground fight with someone a little better than you, but if they really outclass you, they will have destroyed you before you could get a chance to dig into their eye sockets.
  17. Yeah, I really need to keep my shirt on. But, in all seriousness, I've gotten too focused on blunt and sharp objects and the young guys are passing up my grappling skill. I want to train BJJ bad, like so bad. I also need to drill with my rifle in the house.
  18. My guess is that it will return, and Patrick will be prematurely grey.
  19. You guys can have your accursed grips. I'm taking up Turkish oil wrestling. In other news, I'm looking forward to Mike gaining skill. Large strong people are good for my development.
  20. Yeah, get video if you can. High level BJJ is a real pleasure to watch.
  21. We're like amoebas. Or Shang Tsung. Anyway, it's never boring.
  22. It should be an Olympic Sport!!! It was until it was banned by Theodocius I around 390 A.D. When the games were reinstated, Europe felt it was too violent, so it was no included. Also, they made everyone wear clothes in other events for some reason.
  23. On a side note, I hesitated to post here, because- Who am I to argue with Rickson Gracie? But then I realized that Don Fry does MMA, and if I had a son, I'd want him to grow up to be Don Frye. Not just LIKE Don Frye, I'd want him to BE Don Frye.
  24. It's sad that Brock Lesnar if the first thing that comes up regarding the attitude of MMA. Not Dan Severn or GSP or any number of other respectful people in the sport. No, we think of guys spewing blatantly inappropriate crap after a fight. MMA combines striking and grappling, in a ring or cage. How does this differ from a knockdown karate fight or a submission grappling match? In all actuality, it is simply the 2 put together in one event. Should be a perfectly acceptable sport. The problem comes from the marketing to the lowest common denominator- which is where the most money can be made. That's why Mayhem Miller gets a show on MTV and St Pierre doesn't. People want to pay to watch other people act like idiots. The unfortunate effect of all this is that the public assumes that my buddy who runs an MMA gym, and is an all around great human being, is just like the idiot urinating in another guy's locker on the Ultimate Fighter. In summation, I blame Jersey Shore and Road Rules.
