I have some major issues here. I said you guys have no business going all out, and you just proved it. Someone was injured, injuries in the dojo hurt everyone, not just the injured person. You now have 1 less person to help you grow. Any good teacher would not allow this. Second, don't disrespect your training partners like that. Dropping your guard and taking hits to hurt someone's confidence is terribly disrespectful, Besides, the chest is not a good target, he should have hit you in the liver. I would find somewhere to train that will not get you hurt, and I would be more respectful to my training partners.

I hope a month in they don't mean full contact as meaning all-out. A month in, you have no business doing over about 50%, and that's only if you're naturally tough.

I've only had one, on an assault trial. I never want to be on trial here. General opinion in this county is either that anyone who has been arrested is guilty, or that the legal system is the enemy. Guess which ones actually show up for duty. Imagine a 20 year old me heatedly telling 11 people my parents' age what burden of proof means.

That's what the courts are for, imho, and I wouldn't take the law in my hands. 99.999% of the time, I agree with this statement.

Very true. But the serious answer to this is very personal, and would require several pages to really go into. Also, digging the Roland quote.

There are a number of people who should be far away from me in ZA. That changes everything. Enemies are bait.

That's the thing, if they wrong you personally, but your actions would place you in a worse place than they have, then going all Kill Bill on them doesn't gain you much.

It would take something extreme like this, or maybe harming a close friend or family member. But then again, that guy who cut me off in traffic the other day....

We need more people like you in the world. (or fewer stupid people) I borrowed that phrase from Guro Marc Denny. I believe in it, though. Thanks, Shizentai.

1 Have you ever trained with a different style of martial arts? It's kinda what we do. 2 Have you ever trained in another country? You put a "R" in counties.. 3 Have you ever trained outdoors? Yes, quite a bit. 4 Have you ever trained so hard you couldn't stand? Yeah, it's good for the soul. 5 Have you ever had dreams about training? Yes, but more about actual violence. 6 Have you ever been knocked unconscious during training? No, but I've been dropped with body shots, and a low blow that made me wish I could be unconscious. 7 Have you ever intentionally lost a fight? Only when I'm feeding someone submissions to help them develop the skill against resistance. But I guess that's really what an uke is. 8 Have you ever run from a fight? Not really run, but I have backed out of a place while telling 3 guys that I would hurt anyone who followed me. 9 Have you ever cried during training? Tears of joy, for having great friends who punch me square in the nose. 10 Have you ever saved your own life with martial arts? Breakfalls are awesome. So, maybe. 11 Have you ever saved another person's? Maybe by convincing them not to do stupid things in stupid places with stupid people.

Round these parts, wher folks use the phrase "round these parts" without irony, wearing a gi out and about is a good way to get in a fight. -
Rediscovering trapping range.
MasterPain replied to Groinstrike's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Actually, we've been working on getting in that range and staying there a while. You're talking about entries, which, while vital to gaining initial advantage in the in-fight, is not the same as the in-fight itself. We are defining the trapping range as the distance where you can grab and strike, but not so close that it's a wrestlers clinch. Many people pass right through this range and never use it, preferring to grapple or strike from the outside. -
You could always teach the system "as is", with a disclaimer on technique you don't have much faith in, for rank, then teach whatever else you want as a way to round out the skill set.

Rediscovering trapping range.
MasterPain replied to Groinstrike's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
The change of range is, to me, what makes trapping work. If you try to stay there, grappling happens or they back away to a farther range. Yes, ranges do blend, or at least they should, but the specific distance where you can reach someone with your elbows, but your torsos are not touching is the approximate range we are talking about. I can't be convinced that it is the same as largo mano. -
Personal Safety and the 5 Stages of Violent Crime

Seems like it's written for young people, but still holds relevance for adults. Good stuff. -

what style should i decide to practice?
MasterPain replied to trevalan2000's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Yeah, it's cool if it's a legit question of "what art fills my needs". If you look at other forums, you find a lot of style bashing of arts that suit many of their practitioners perfectly. This leads to trolling and general stupidity, which is of no benefit to anyone. You'll find that here, any question asked in earnest will be responded to in kind. Anyway, welcome to the forums and to the world of martial arts. I hope that you find joy in both. -

MMA could be the way to go. It will give you a good skill base if you change your mind later. Kyokushin tends to encourage crosstraining, but doen't include much grappling. Judo is perfect for short stocky guys, but doesn't include striking typically. As far as competition, you'd want to train hard and consistantly for a couple years before doing an MMA fight, just because, frankly, it hurts. In karate or judo, you could compete with others of similar skill in a few months. The best advice, though, is to visit local schools, ask to watch a class, and get a feel of the general vibe. -

According to the Book of Genesis, it was a rock. Some other traditions say it was a stick. Either way, it wasn't long before someone put a rock on a stick.
