Based on the video, I'd say there is some good instruction going on, and good skill at white belt level. Most schools won't have you doing much beyond compliant drilling for a good while. Add chaos too soon, and it all turns to slop. Never add chaos, you end up with a beautiful bunch of slop. Have you watched any of the advanced classes? You might find out that the advanced class is exactly what you are looking for. They may be on a kata-focused set of classes at the beginning to teach movement. Ask if you can sit and watch the advanced classes a few times.

That's what I meant.

It depends on your organization. Some require a certain rank to teach as part of the organization. BJJ, from what I understand, you can start a school at brown, or if there is no higher rank in your area, purple.

I live to serve. Or something.

KarateDo is the Karate way of life. Karateka is a person who practices karate. So, a Karateka is one who practices KarateDo.

http://www.isshinkai.net/ordering01-DVD_Products.html Instructional videos from a first generation student of your arts founder. Costs $200, but you won't get much closer to the source. I can't find anything of his freely available. I haven't seen any of his Karate videos, but I have some of his Arnis videos, and he is very clear and detailed. A great teacher even in video format.

Stronger is better. Just be sure to stretch. -
If you didn't have Karate what would you be doing now?

I miss the late 80s and early 90s. They really knew how to make a show then. Even up to the early 2000s they were ok. -
It would be interesting to see some of the cane-specific stuff. If nothing else, though, the hook would help keep the stick from being pulled from your grasp as easily.

Lazy and need motivation?
MasterPain replied to MasterPain's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Yes it is. I was waiting to see if it's allowed to advertise the event here. Anyway, it's got me excited, not only for a fight that could be another type of rite of passage, but the opportunity to do some good for people. -

So, it turns out that the initial point of impact isn't nearly as bad as the wrap around effect. Oh well, Chewbacca lives on Endor. My last few workouts, I have added sprints and running up and down hills. Well, to be honest, it's more plodding than running. But if I keep it up it will evolve back into running. -

Justice makes good points. I'd like to emphasize the DECISION part. Instead of trying to quit, decide that your not going to smoke any more. If you give in and have one, forgive yourself, but reaffirm your decision not to smoke. I know it sounds like semantics, but semantics are important. If they weren't there would be no reason to learn all this pesky language stuff. "Try" implies a possibility of failure, and thereby makes failure more acceptable within your mind. I hope I was able to convey my meaning. -

If the class is doing that good of a job at working you out, I'd try to just stay mobile throughout the day. Take more walks, just be lightly active when you'd normally just be sitting around. Things like this should help more than you'd think. -
I discovered that I still have a respectable 100 meter dash..... and that's about it.

That stuff is scary. I had to talk a co-worker back to reality once. He almost attacked a forklift driver with a hammer.

Ueshirokarate: Mostly in the time spent leaning the sequence and pattern. Also, in the understanding of what each movement was meant to be. A 2 or three move sequence is most likely created for a certain understood purpose, and can more easily be practiced out of order or in combination with another sequence.

Agree to a fight with these things with minimal rules and gear about 6 and a half months in the future. It's time to step it up a few notches.

By this definition, I do a lot of kata.

Why are you getting into a number of fights? Other than that, it sounds normal.

Meditation and Martial Arts

Read the Book of Five Rings. Musashi was the man. Apart from that, the samurai were Japanese soldiers in a different age and culture. You could go through their rituals, without gaining much, because they had different beliefs and cultural reasons behind their rituals. Unless you were raised with Shinto and Buddhism, along with being part of a class of warrior nobility, the ritual would be mostly academic value.
