  1. JKD .... I am going to refer you to check some threads in the Health & Fitness Forum re: Dynamic Stretching. Click on SEARCH in toolbar and put Dynamic Stretching in ... and a bunch of threads pop up! Imagine that!!! Go to "Bouncing/Dynamic Stretching" that will most likely answer most of your questions!
  2. Diva Deb .... (I like it!) .... your all welcome!!! _________________ 1st dan Black Belt Tae Kwon Do (ITF)/ CardioKickbox/Fitness Instructor [ This Message was edited by: KickChick on 2002-03-17 09:36 ]
  3. The traditional front kick uses the ball of the foot to strike. The padding of the ball of the foot protects the bones of the foot from injury. Now as far as the snap and push kick go ... for the snap kick, the knee is pointed at the target and the lower leg is snapped into the kick. The knee must be raised high enough that the foot does not just slide up the surface of the target. For a push kick, the kick rises higher than the target and then drops as the foot extends and the hip is thrust behind the kick. Although the leg and knee may move in many directions, the foot itself moves in a straight line from the floor to the target. I actually never heard of using the top of foot for front kicking (scoup kicks)and usually for groin kicks an upward shin kick is much more powerful! Yeouch! In Uechiryu, the big toe is used as a striking area for the front kick, but this is dangerous to the kicker also. The heel may also be used as the striking area. The toes point upward or outward and the heel is pushed forward. _________________ 1st dan Black Belt Tae Kwon Do (ITF)/ CardioKickbox/Fitness Instructor [ This Message was edited by: KickChick on 2002-03-17 11:02 ]
  4. There are several threads within this H & F forum that will offer you some pros and cons of weightlifting at an early age. 12 seems to be a bit young for "serious" lifting. But you can begin to tone with light weights and low reps to get into the groove (so-to-speak) and offering your mom some companionship while training will be beneficial to both of you! I am sure there are trainers at the gym that can offer advice. A good cardio and weight program has been proven to add years to one's life!
  5. 1/2 Italian...1/4 English and 1/4 IRISH here! Corned Beef, Cabbage & Potatoes and Green Beer ... Happy St. Patty's Day!!!
  6. Well that happens to be your opinion and that's ok ... but the two types of bags are used for entirely two different purposes. First of all the "hanging" heavy bag is good for side kicks esp. As I posted in Heavy Bags in the KB Forum. "The way to ensure you can do a side kick properly is to use a heavy kicking bag. (When you sidekick a bag there are 2 possible good outcomes... one being that when the bag goes flying to the ceiling which is the minimal damage you can do by pushing your opponent to the ground. The superior way is to cause the target area of your bag to bounce back causing the bottom of the bag to lift up which comes when you do the sidekick with a decent snap/hip thrust/retraction of leg. The bag does not go flying up because you have sent your energy horizontally which is the effect you should have on an opponent. By doing it in this way they will be winded and be knocked to the ground, as opposed to flying back and getting up." In class we use the hanging bag to work on performing kicks on a moving target...letting the bag swing back and forth and then circular.... or having someone hold and release it as you run towards to perform a jump sidekick for example. I also have a wavemaster which I have filled with sand....I don't like filling it with water because I spring links all the time and the sand stabilizes it better! It doesn't bounce back in the way the hanging bag does so it offers more resistance for punching and push kicks. I tend to train more on the wavemaster before doing breaks. I am going to close this topic here and we can all resume discussion in Heavy Bag in the Kickboxing Forum. There Hiya you will find many more useful tips!
  7. Jack... I have this same printout posted on the safe (holding all of our company's assets). When one of the employees came in to open the safe to put something in they had remarked "who stuck this here and why??" .... and I replied that everyone is so worried about how much is going into the safe and coming out and being deposited to our bank and so on and so forth ... I thought it was "worth" reading!
  8. Hey Bretty ... I will try and help you out .... (although I am not "the man") :pony: refer to "Twist Kick help!" in Korean Forum
  9. The knee is lifted straight up to the desired kicking height as the corresponding arm is brought across the midsection. As the kick is delivered forward, this arm is thrown back at the same rate and the hips are twisted and pushed forward. The opposing arm is brought across the midsection to guard. The target is struck using the ball of the foot, and the anchor foot is turned out with knee slightly bent. The foot must be recoiled immediately using the same motion. http://www.tkd.co.uk/webpages/galpics/14.htm Suggest you perform stretches that work the hips pushing them and the pelvic area forward. Continue to do the splits but do side splits rather than forward splits. Its all in the hips and I find that the guys generally have a harder time working their hips.... we gals are naturals at it but if you practice loosening up a bit ... it may look funny to those per chance watching you but, wiggle your hips.... thrust your pelvis forward and flick out your flexed foot (following the motion of the wet towel) quick retraction!!! It just may be something you personally cannot master .... keep trying!!! I hope this helps somewhat .... In our school we refer to this kick as a reverse roundhouse (not quite sure if that is correct or not though) _________________ 1st dan Black Belt Tae Kwon Do (ITF)/ CardioKickbox/Fitness Instructor [ This Message was edited by: KickChick on 2002-03-15 07:26 ]
  10. I will have to check that one out (I average about 60-70 words a minute) .... I have a great site too for other e-tools... http://ninjasuit.com (whatta great name huh???) You can have some fun with this one....check their typing test out too!
  11. Welcome (again) van_damme !!! He may not be a "real" martial artist but he's mighty fine in other areas ... he brings a bit of sexiness to MA ... (at least I think he is better looking than Chuck)
  12. Just wanted to inform all of you members that if you click on the Support Us link on the bottom of your page and go to KarateDepot, they are having a good sale on uniforms, sparring equipment and they also have added some Chinese music CD's ... great for meditation!
  13. Exactly....again, topic is about "bowing" .... and really I equate that with "respectful greeting" ... plain and simple. If someone were to extend their hand to you, you would extend yours in a hand shake that would be a greeting of mutual respect. C'mon lets not go off on a tangent ... this is how this whole thing got started by these 2 kids. Don't make a mountain out of a mole hill! Chill out and leave sex and animals out of this .... If you are going to quote the bible ... then all of us here (according to the Bible) are damned for eternity! Nowhere in the Bible are we told to resort to violence in defense of ourselves. "You have heard that it was said, 'An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.' But I say to you, do not resist him who is evil; but whoever slaps you on your right cheek, turn to him the other also. And if anyone wants to sue you, and take your shirt, let him have your coat also. And whoever shall force you to go one mile, go with him two... love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you." (Matthew 5:38-44) ....nobody here knows this but I am also a Sunday School teacher _________________ 1st dan Black Belt Tae Kwon Do (ITF)/ CardioKickbox/Fitness Instructor [ This Message was edited by: KickChick on 2002-03-14 09:09 ]
  14. Welcome to KarateForums van_damme! Might I suggest that you click on the Heath & Fitness forum topic and scroll down. You will find extensive threads regarding splits and stretching techniques! That seems to be one of our favorite subjects here! Good Luck! _________________ 1st dan Black Belt Tae Kwon Do (ITF)/ CardioKickbox/Fitness Instructor [ This Message was edited by: KickChick on 2002-03-14 08:40 ]
  15. http://abcnews.go.com/sections/wnt/DailyNews/insanity_defense020313.html ... Here is a link ... pretty thorough roundup of the case. Today we will know the verdict of the penalty. ....I say does the father have any responsibilty for this??? Was he blind to his wife's emotional state?? .... it is my feeling that there are just some people that should not have children ... and look at how society treats people who do choose not to have children.....like there is something wrong with them. Actually they are probably doing what is right for them and society shouldn't question their choice in the matter.
  16. I have one down the street I'll check the price! Thanks!
  17. Since many of you members are from other countries you may not be aware of this news item that involves a Texas mother who was found guilty today of drowning her 5 (6 mos-7 yrs. old) children in a bath tub. Some are opposed of the "harsh" sentence she received because many feel she was in the throes of a psychotic breakdown and that she didn't know right from wrong! She could be sentenced to death. The penalty phase begins March 14. An array of evidence was presented to show that despite her delusional behavior she knew killing the kids was wrong. She did it she says because they were not righteous and if they were allowed to grow up, would have been doomed for hell. She suffered no remorse afterwards. If they vote to spare her life she will receive life in prison with parole eligibility after 40 years.
  18. Thanks for the feedback shotochem .... I am going to give it another try! Wow..... why is this stuff so expensive???? I don't know why the weight gain .... but since I am trying to not gain a bit (going on vacation in 3 weeks) I will go back on. Right now looking good in the bikini is priority numero uno! ....
  19. ok is it time to post those "split" pics?? The idea of the patches went well at our school. The kids are really working at it! I wish we adults would get one ... In fact, many of them could strive a little more to work their stretches ... some people just think it will never come .... that they'll never be able to have such flexibility. The other night at my class as we were doing the V-stretch, seated with legs all the way out to the sides.... I remarked to get those belly buttons flush to the floor ... and one of the women says under her breath.... "how about a belly roll does that count?"
  20. Back in the day ... the 80's .....Wow.... wasn't there a movie made about that???
  21. We have been doing been doing the same empty handed defense against knife attacks during the last portion of our class time.... but I'd be behind KSN Doug following his lead. c'ya!!!!!
  22. Bretty .... check out the thread "Glucosamine" in the Health & Fitness Forum which should answer your questions. Guess I was pretty impatient .... is weight gain/bloating associated with it .... I found that to be the negative effect.
  23. hmmm... interesting title of this thread! One thing I tell my students when they are executing "air" kicks is to not concentrate so much on the power in the extension but on the "pullback" motion of the kick. Never, EVER straighten the knee on your kicks. If you perform your kicks on the heavy bag routinely you should get a good idea of how your kicks should "feel".
  24. There are so many out there ... way too numerous to mention here. Find a good Martial Arts Portal (do a search including the words martial arts (style i.e. fighting, drills and the word portal)) ... and surf away!!!
  25. Hey ShiN ... Welcome from me too! You've heard of the "Fast and the Furious"? .... well, we are the "Fun and the Friendly"!
