  1. Certain martial art styles are better suited for "older" students although I do find that allowances are made even in these styles for a variety of reasons... i.e. poor flexibility, problem in jumping, poor endurance/cardio levels, forms---um, um, um, oh! forgetfulness too. I mean some things can be worked on while others are roadblocks caused by age or physical limitations. Now does this warrant an individual to be paid less attention to or more attention to ... or to mainstream them into the rest of the class. Should there be a "senior" class (much in the same way there is a "little dragons" type class for the 4,5,6 yr olds. I don't think the numbers of older students warrant this course of action yet although the trend has been starting martial arts at an "older" age (especially now with 9/11 and everyone's desire to know selfdefense because of it). _________________ 1st dan Black Belt Tae Kwon Do (ITF)/ CardioKickbox/Fitness Instructor [ This Message was edited by: KickChick on 2002-03-11 10:25 ]
  2. Welcome Je Ja to KarateForums! Congratulations on your recent advancement!
  3. ... couldn't agree more steveking! I too have started to incorporate some pilates into my classes. (I used "Pilates for Dummies")... then modified some of the moves to make them more challenging for my class (I love to hear them groan when they do crunches!!) There are some awesome core muscle workout exercises out there and they are very beneficial to us martial artists and to anyone who experiences any type of back problems!
  4. Yes KF is certainly growing ...member-wise and post-wise! Lots of real interesting and thought engaging posts ...(ha...not to mention some real humorous stuff ) ... just shows the quality of our members here on KarateForums! ... I noticed up to 25 "guests" logged on to KF over this past weekend! WOW
  5. Listen Sai.... all I can say is .... I've got to hand it to you for training period! You're an inspiration to us all! You just listen to your own body ... and act accordingly. I have a feeling you're a survivor and have a very strong will, maybe that is why it bothers you so when you have to take time off to recover....if you feel you aren't training when doing this then supplement it by kicking back with a good book on martial arts or health/fitness (that is what I do!)....
  6. Yikes!!! ... can't believe everything you read!! I'd hafta to see it to believe it!!!
  7. Not the intended use for the Ab Toner. American ingenuity (not at its finest I'm afraid ...) ... I heard about this on the radio this morning ...don't try this at home folks!!!!! http://www.landoverbaptist.org/news0302/abtoner.html
  8. ok.... so I guess this is pretty common then. Yoda I average about 750 - 1500 mgs per day ... but I noticed I was gaining weight and retaining water and when I stopped taking it I dropped the couple lbs. I put on. I heard it does raise blood sugar levels in certain individuals(???) I had faith in the stuff and maybe because I was hopng it would work, when I first started taking it I thought I had seen some improvement ... just one less pill to take
  9. Maybe either Yoda or Bretty can help me with this one... I think maybe I might have this "ligament hyperlaxity" in my pelvic/hip joint. I noticed an increase in the "popping" in the last 2 years or so. No pain but it is annoying to hear. When I stand and twist my right leg to the out side you can hear the grinding sound of bone (hard to explain) During any physical activity that involves hip or leg rotation (especially hook kicks and other physical activity ) the sound is apparent and starting to get louder. I have noticed that I can actually pop my hip back over my pelvic bone in order to do a front split (something I've been working on recently) so I know this isn't causing it. I've been taking a glucosamine supplement but I don't see any improvement so I stopped taking it. Should I have it checked out? No pain associated with the movement.
  10. ... ok here goes!! Your body will burn more calories if you work out in warm temperatures. The main reason is the heat's effect on your cardiovascular system. Heat causes more blood to flow out to the skin in an attempt to cool the body. This strains the rest of the system, which now has less blood for exercising muscles ... end result being that you burn more calories. However, you shouldn't exercise in uncomfortable hot conditions ... don't risk heat exhaustion., and of course if you're working out with the heat turned up or in warmer weather...increase you're hydration by drinking more water prior to your workout and afterwards too! Exercising in warm conditions will help to reduce stiffness in your muscles, and as your body will already be warm, there will be less chance of muscles tears. During our TKD class our instructor keep the heat up and I have followed suit as weel and usually keep the cardio class turned up to 72 or so but with fans going to keep the air circulating. _________________ 1st dan Black Belt Tae Kwon Do (ITF)/ CardioKickbox/Fitness Instructor [ This Message was edited by: KickChick on 2002-03-08 07:40 ]
  11. So that's that ticking sound I hear every time I log on to KF ... Actually, I read alot of articles online when I can .... most mags you can now access online and just "save" pages to your hd and read offline!
  12. How are you going to execute the kick ... from lead foot? Step behind lead foot hook kick? Spin hook kick? I've done a 3 board with the last 2 techniques no problem. There is more momentum behind your kick with each. Just remember to follow through while incorporating that hip thrust into your kick....and to work on those hooks with a heavy bag. Hook kick until you find yourself comfortable with the power you are using! Good Luck!!
  13. Lets refer back to the article in question here...this was not a matter of self defense or hitting a woman cos she hit you! ... this was a case of domestic violence. This guy had pressure point training ... the wife wasn't just slapped around here! To apply a pressure point to an area is to know what that end result is going to be (premeditated) .... death or parylization at the least.
  14. Hey CT .... the 4 bux I was referring to was the cost of a TKD forms CD I found on a site....wow I thought that was a bargain and so did TKD_McGee ...gotta grab a bargain when you can!!! ( In the TKD Forum under thread "TKD Forms") Glad you like the link!!
  15. ah, a man who likes to get the most for his money.... hey why don't they throw in a foot rub too! .... Hey TKD that 4 bux was a bargain now wasn't it???

  18. Welcome to KarateForums steveking63 ... glad you listened and joined us! (... not the Steve King are we?
  19. oh by no means did I mean that you were purposely doing so ... just that I am sure many of us at times have gotten the urge to spar with our spouses ... (and not just for fun!) martial artist and domestic abuse is a deadly combo! _________________ 1st dan Black Belt Tae Kwon Do (ITF)/ CardioKickbox/Fitness Instructor [ This Message was edited by: KickChick on 2002-03-07 07:59 ]
  20. yeah, well besides the obvious ... then check out http://www.heelspurs.com/_intro.html it can possibly be "plantar fasciitis, heel spurs, causing your heel pain.
  21. A black belt saw a dog attacking a child, so she grabbed the dog and strangled it. A news reporter standing nearby said, "Your a hero!" The reporter wrote in his notebook "Mother Saves Child from Savage Dog!" The woman saw the note and said "I am not a mother." "OK," replied the reporter and he wrote down "Hero Saves Child from Savage Dog!" The woman replied, "I'm not a hero, I'm just a Taekwondo black belt who happen to walk by." "Oh!," said the reporter, then he wrote down "Savage Woman Kills Family Pet!"
  22. ...hope you're not planting seeds here Sai!
  23. There is no mention of any liability contracts that may or may have not been signed by the practioners in these cases. Most schools/competions/tournaments have you sign a release of liability, assumption or risk, parental consent (when applicable) and also an indemnity agreement. "The student/practitioner should be may fully aware that the martial art involves risks and dangers of serious bodily injury, including permanent disability, paralysis and even death. These risks may be caused by their own actions, or inactions and should be held responsible for losses, costs and damages incurred as a result of their participation in such activity." Many waivers do go on to say that the participant agrees not to sue and to hold harmless any school and or club where such activity takes place. _________________ 1st dan Black Belt Tae Kwon Do (ITF)/ CardioKickbox/Fitness Instructor [ This Message was edited by: KickChick on 2002-03-06 11:21 ]
