  1. One day the devil challenged God to a Taekwondo tournament. Smiling, God proclaimed, "You don't have a chance, I have some of the greatest ancient Taekkyo masters up here". "Yes", snickered the devil, "but I have all the referees down here."
  2. Our school went to competition this past weekend. There were several injuries incurred by some of our students ... mostly soreness, bruises, and one dislocated shoulder.... this competion lasted all day! How do you plan to be a peak performance throughout the day? 1. You can eat small snacks throughout the day to help keep your energy up. Secondly, any drink (or food) which contains caffeine, such as soda, coffee, tea and chocolate, draws water out of the muscles and dumps it into your stomach.... plus you'll be visiting the bathroom way too much !(this is due to the caffeine) 2. The most important thing to have is lot of plain water, even if you do not feel thirsty. By the time you feel thirsty, your body is already dehydrated. cold water is usually easier to drink and digest than tap water. Fill your water bottles up, and keep drinking a lot of cold, plain water all day. The better your body is hydrated, the better you and your muscles feel and the less likely you are to injure your muscles. Remember, drink so much water that your urine is clear. 3.Injuries, including bruises, should be iced immediately after a match for 20 minutes (NEVER ANY MORE THAN 20 MINUTES!), The ice won't make you stiff. What makes you stiff is the swelling which occurs from a bruise or injury. You should also tape or wrap your injuries after icing, to keep swelling down and to support your injury. Do not use any heat rub or spray on a new injury - it will only make it swell more! Heat rubs and sprays are only to be used for stiff muscles, NOT NEW INJURIES. All injuries should be iced for 20 minutes, 3 or 4 times per day, for at least 72 hours following an injury. Make sure to only ice an injury once every 60 minutes, in order to give the muscle a chance to return to normal room temperature. Never ice an injury over 30 minutes, because the ice will then have the opposite effect and cause blood to rush into the area to warm it. 4. You may find that your legs are tired or noodle-like after a match. If your legs feel this way, and you have more fights to go, simply put your legs up a wall and "hang them". This help keep the blood from flooding them, preventing that heavy feeling. While you are laying there with your legs up on the wall, drink plenty of water and sports drinks. 5. If you get a headache from dehydration (you didn't drink your water shame shame!), take acetaminophen (Tylenol) instead of an anti-inflammatory (such as Advil, Nuprin, Aspirin or Aleve). If you get a headache from a kick to the head ONLY TAKE ACETAMINOPHEN (Tylenol). DO NOT EVER TAKE AN ANTI-INFLAMMATORY (Advil, Nuprin, Aspirin or Aleve), as these products can increase the effects and the possibility of internal bleeding in the skull. If pain continues for more than 24 hours, you need to be seen by a doctor!.Anti-inflammatory medications are to be used for injuries in which there is possible pain and swelling, except of the head. 6. Spend at least 10-15 minutes stretching out all your muscles ... do not neglect anything! Stretching should be done prior to each match and following the completion of each match. If you do this, your muscles are less likely to become sore or injured throughout the day. Remember to that you need to be mentally prepared for the day also! _________________ KarateForums Sensei 1st dan BlackBelt TKD(ITF) CardioKickboxing/Fitness Inst. 6. I follow the "shotochem style of meditation" also! To be able to free the mind of all outside influences and yes to connect with "yourself" ... to be selfish for a few minutes of the day I believe is extremely important especially if you are extending yourself to everthing and everyone else dring your day. It gives you a chance to relax, connect with your feelings ...was it a good day ...do you have time to make it better? I usually come out of it and find that yes, I have neglected something today and either go and give my husband a big kiss or hug my kids tight!
  7. ... unfortunately my downloads ... download at the pace of a snail! I think I know the music... Star Wars. ok ... its been 12 minutes and 14% is downloaded ... I'll get back to ya!
  8. What happens during a spar when you get clocked in the head and see stars for a few moments... you usually stop and maybe pull off to te side for a breather. But what if this was a real fight .... your attacker won't be giving you that chance to collect your thoughts and will keep coming at you with more punches. So how do you prepare for this? This is a real neat drill and reminds me of a kid game we used to play! (so its fun too and you'll get a laugh if you do this drill in class!) This exercise was thought up by a Thai-boxing teacher. You'll need a baseball bat.Hold the bat vertically, with one end on the ground. Touch your forehead to the top of the bat. One end of the bat is on the ground, and your forehead is touching the other end. Now you quickly run around and around the bat while the bat is in the same spot, ... about 10 to 15 times. As soon as you are done. you drop the bat and immediately start either punching or kicking at a target/heavy bag or a focus glove. When doing this with kids its just fun to watch them swerve as they run back to the finish line but you are using this activity to simulate getting your brains rattled by a strong punch or kick to your head and then trying to recover. Spin around the bat for awhile, then see if you can punch or kick with any accuracy. ______________ KarateForums Sensei 1st dan BlackBelt TKD(ITF) CardioKickboxing/Fitness Inst. 10. Obviously they have to fill air time with something and really it all boils down to moola$$$$ .... how much the network has to dish out or fork in .... The program director of the network chooses what to air based on many objectives including actual viewer appeal... hmm, what does that say about Canadian television viewers ... you just may be part of the minority. _________________ KarateForums Sensei 1st dan BlackBelt TKD(ITF) CardioKickboxing/Fitness Inst. 14. You guys are too funny. What you need is a female here complaining about her weight! blahblahblah... I am right where I want to be weight wise ....135 lbs. I just don't want to gain! I am going on vacation in a little more than 2 weeks. (plan on drinking like a fish and eating like a horse!) Yikes ... bathing suit ??? Doing lots of crunches and toning with those weights and resistance bands!!! Plenty of cardio --- teaching the kickboxing. My food plan is eating a good breakfast ... protein/meal bar at lunch and early dinner. Cut out all food after 6:00!!! Drink lots of water, no beer , wine is good though! Good luck guys!!
  15. I always thought that self defense was really not the final objective in practicing Tai Chi (although the ability to protect oneself is inherent in the study). From what I know about Tai Chi such an objective would be seen as shallow and petty in comparison with what I thought was the major goal.... acquiring inner peace and the unification of one’s body, mind and spirit. As a self defense system, Tai Chi applies leverage, balance, and alignment. Also, in Tai Chi you learn to harness and deploy the natural reflex response. This reflex response happens when, for example, we were suddenly awakened when dozing off in bed or nodding off during a lecture in school? The emphasis on slow motion practice is how you develop the ability to relax in the face of danger, and then awaken with a start, springing into whatever technique is appropriate for the situation at hand. This relaxing and springing, this change from a relaxed state to a focused state combined with proper alignment and body mechanics, can pack more power and speed in your punches, kicks, and other techniques. I think hard and soft work well with each other!!
  16. Some of my favorites ... The human body was wisely designed so that we can neither pat our own backs nor kick ourselves too easily. Thunder makes all the noise; lightning gets the job done. A drunk man's words are a sober man's thoughts. You can clutch the past so tightly to your chest that it leaves your arms too full to embrace the present. -Jan Glidewell The turkey is living proof that an animal can survive with no intelligence at all. -Harvey Comstock Sometimes you say more by saying nothing. -Some Bald Guy
  17. I was up late doing these questions and by the last one I started to get a little punchy! ... Patrick will have the last say as to what is the best answer for ques. 20!
  18. Great info Yoda thanks for supplying us with that! True Hiya, besides carrying vitamins into your blood, fat is a vital energy source. It also makes meals more filling, something that helps prevent overeating. Still no more than 30 percent of your total calories should come from fat. Besides those polyunsaturated fats /oils you listed ... another good source is salmon and avocadoes! ...and speaking of cholesterol, a recent study done over there at Cambridge U. found that those people who eat 5 meals a day had lower cholesterol levels than those who ate 2 larger meals. You can keep your weight under control by maintaining a consistent total daily calorie intake no matter how many meals you consume. _________________ KarateForums Sensei 1st dan BlackBelt TKD(ITF) CardioKickboxing/Fitness Inst. 20. My husband has my name on his forearm ... still 25 years ago .... he called me from California to tell me he was going to have it done ....thing was he had done it already! I was flattered actually Funny thing was the buddy he went with also had a girlfriend with the same name. The tattoo artist thought it was the same girl and almost didn't do it!
  21. I agree with Yoda ..... have it checked out professionally. Sounds like much more than a hamstring or quad pull .... Yeouch!! ... Good Luck!
  22. Actually the statistics are on the increase for girls having more accidents. My son just bought his first car and we went through this whole thing with him. He also had a down payment on a gorgeous 96 Nissan 200SX ...rally sport --we not only found out from mechanic that transmission was bad but that to insure it would have been $6,000.00 a year! that's liability + collision. You need to have liability but you can get insurance without colllision. Just don't crash up! You can get a nice car but as soon as insurance co. thinks its a sporty car .... your rates go up. Anything 96 and lower with no collision will run you less (oh and low hp too!) My son finally found a nice car 96 Nissan Altima fully equipped ... power everything CD system, alarm, power remote....Insured for 1,000. a year! Yikes! My son is driving!!! Hear comes the gray hair!!!

  25. As a martial artist (outside the dojo) you must analyze an attack and determine the least amount of force you can use and still be effective. It is your responsibility to know your abilities and strength and to use them to cause no more harm than necessary. The law allows a person to defend him or herself but it requires the person to use only the amount of force that is absolutely necessary to stop an attack... and what caused him to lash out at you? Are we hearing the whole story here?
