  1. Welcome ...Yes.... tell us more about yourself ... what type of MA do you train in?
  2. The type of martial art I wanted to get into was not the basis for my decision in choosing TKD... (but I'm glad I made the choice!) .... actually a girlfriend of mine's husband owned his own school (the school I am now still attending/teaching) and in talking one day at our children's bus stop she mentioned the fact that she was returning to TKD (she took a break after having kids)and would I be interested in doing so. I thought I would have my son (then 7) try it ... thought about it some more then decided to enroll also. That was 10 years ago. Now my girlfriend and I both teach and will be testing together for our second degrees!
  3. Congrats ...
  4. Welcome to you KarateMom ... will be nice to have another "mom" here!
  5. I agree dragonstyle18 ..... There are certain kicks that I have trouble doing with my "bad leg" (the left) and I am right handed. I doubletrain kicks the left side because of this. For punches .... weight on the left nothing on the right hand .... and punch the heavy bag. I am envious of those ambidextrous folks! _________________ KarateForums Sensei 1st dan Black Tae Kwon Do CardioKickboxing/Fitness Inst. [ This Message was edited by: KickChick on 2002-04-08 13:21 ]
  6. There are a few things to keep in mind while visiting and posting to this forum (and just about any forum of any substantial quality on the net). Most importantly, you're guests here - expect you to either follow the rules or leave. (for example "no cussing" as TKD posted above) The decision is yours whether you want to abide by the rules or not. Immature and annoying behavior will not be tolerated and shouldn't. The administration reserve the right to produce fitting consequences for breaking any guidelines. _________________ KarateForums Sensei 1st dan Black Tae Kwon Do CardioKickboxing/Fitness Inst. 8. Welcome to KarateForums Drunken Master! Nice to have you onboard!
  9. Well depending on the martial art or even what rules a certain competition is following. In some comps punches aren't given any points! go figure ....
  10. .... actually you have to watchout for those boxing shorts that aren't tight Yoda. WooHoo one good extended kick out to the side and ("I see London...I see France...") this is the only time I wear "lycra" during my class (underneath those boxing shorts) Make sure you check yourself out in a mirror folks, kicking in your attire before you go to these classes ... I have seen way too much _________________ KarateForums Sensei 1st dan BlackBelt TKD(ITF) CardioKickboxing/Fitness Inst. [ This Message was edited by: KickChick on 2002-04-08 04:30 ]
  11. I agree. Remember the other big muscle ... your brain! Have a good mindset ... and put down that fork! Overeating or poor dietary habits may just be the problem here. Look into that also. Lots of great posts regarding weight loss here in forum ... do a "search" on weight loss and a bunch of informative threads will pop up for you! Good luck there sabra, making the decision to become thinner is your first giant step!
  12. Magical Goose your left hand punching problem may be as simple as this. If you're right handed normally ... you tend to have more "power" and "dexterity" with that side. What you now need to work on is "balance". Balance out the power and speed between your right and left. Try wearing heavy gloves for bag work or strapping on wrist weights while doing speedbag work. _________________ KarateForums Sensei 1st dan BlackBelt TKD(ITF) CardioKickboxing/Fitness Inst. 13. Good question there Bon!
  14. Unfortunately it may not be that simple to Dbzhub. Let us know what type of diet you are actually going on ... and maybe we can all make some suggestions! ... You may honestly have a sluggish metabolism in which you might just have to engage it a bit. Remember it took some time putting on the weight and it will ake some time to get it off.
  15. OMG!!!! Did I "hear" you say Who's Bill Wallace??? http://www.superfoot.com/aboutbill.htm Educate yourself man!
  16. Awesome Bretty ... nice 'blade-ing' on the sidekick ... This might be a nice photo feature to include on the forum for the future ..."Post pic your best technique" (martial arts of course!)
  17. Welcome Thaifoot :pony:
  18. The ranking system began with the Japanese I believe. The Japanese favor handing out certification for everything that happens in Japan, they naturally were drawn to the idea of certifying everyone who entered the martial arts. More than Westerners, in my opinion, the Japanese think that being official is very important. That which is not official is apparently without much value to the Japanese. They might even be said to value certification over quality and skill. So those in the West who have learned Karate from the Japanese now receive a slip of paper, a card, a colored belt, and patches and shirts. We have discussed the "value" of the belt in many other threads here ... and it is always a much debated subject. Let's face it... it is necessary ... it is a certification of skill, yes you know you're skilled but if you change schools or eventually want to instruct or get a job as a security professional ... it will serve its purpose. _________________ KarateForums Sensei 1st dan BlackBelt TKD(ITF) CardioKickboxing/Fitness Inst. 20. ...um, Pamela Lee isn't either (a good actress), so what is she getting paid for He's got a good set of pecs and he can kick (and kick high I might add!) I saw the movie last night ... action scenes were highly unbelieveable ... like at the end when VanDamme shoots the guy and he blows back like 20 feet in mid air ...
  21. You seem to have a good variety going there. I would suggest beginning with upper body (jabs, uppercuts, crosspunches, backfist, hooks to bag) Slow (power) then increase tempo (doubletime) alternating left and right. Do your lower next ..kicks. Front, side, roundhouses (off lead then off back leg ... alternating sides. Do power kicking and then you can also do some tension kicks to bag too. You work on a number that is good for you ... start at 50 increase to 100 each technique/each leg. Then put them together! Jab/Punch/Front Kick off back leg etc. etc. This is what I do for my cardio kickbox class ... I do have routines I can email to you. PM me ... give me some time, and I can have a few sent.
  22. I know we touched upon this in "How high can you kick?" that was posted .... but this approach has worked for me! And girls (and you guys too!) this also works wonders on the "butt" too! Do slow leg extensions by doing a front kick - lift your right knee up with your body upright at all times. Never lean and then extend your lower leg slowly till your whole leg is parallel to the ground, pause a second, and then retract to knee up position and then turn your lower leg up sideways and extend to side kick position. Now keep your upperbody upright (hard for beginners but youll find that keeping your body upright in real life fights is a must if you want to survive ... you can easily bring your leg down as opposed to being off balance and having your legs swept out from under you), you should attempt to hold the leg as high as possible by flexing your hip/butt muscle. Now you can pause as long as you want for this one until you go numb because this position is the best for developing the muscles needed to generate hip power when doing aerial kicks. Then retract and bring your knee back up in front of your chest and then lean forward while simutaneoously delivering a slow back kick, hold the position, arch your back up using the lower back muscles and if you want twist your upperbody slightly anti clockwise so you're looking over your left shoulder while your right leg is up in the air. You can see your foot (this will help you to balance). Then retract and do again with the same leg or left leg. The key is to do these continuously... one right, one left or 10 right 10 left. This will also help your stretching and balance. Eventually if it becomes too easy lets say you can do 100 in one go really slow or keep your side kick leg up 10 minutes, use an ankle weight (not if you have knee probs though!). You'll find that the result is that your kicking will be really fast so this (endurance training) combined with kicking the heavy bag (power training) will give you power, speed and air superiority. Your kicks will be so fast that when your opponent is half way executing, you'll have landed your attack. _________________ KarateForums Sensei 1st dan BlackBelt TKD(ITF) CardioKickboxing/Fitness Inst. 23. All that I know about a multiple attack situation is that you DO NOT back up against a wall. You have no where to go and no way to distance yourself from the attackers. You need to quickly get to an open area. You need to move in a way so your attackers are aligned one behind each other ....this is where footwork is very important. In this way you can take them out one by one or grab one and use him as a shield. _________________ KarateForums Sensei 1st dan BlackBelt TKD(ITF) CardioKickboxing/Fitness Inst.
