  1. ... So.... all in all it's ok to be sore (pain wasn't mentioned) .... everyone gets sore while training. No pain is good .... listen to your body.... No tension here Bon! Thanks for the info Bitseach .... many, many threads in H&F on the benefits of stretching .... how to ..... and what types are best. _________________ KarateForums Sensei 1st dan Black Tae Kwon Do CardioKickboxing/Fitness Inst. 2. ... I too (those who know where "I" stand on certain 'issues') , know that I can get very passionate on certain subjects. When you ask for opinions here on the forum ...you are going to get them! Just remember before you ask ... you may not like what you are going to hear, but we do have a culmination of experience here within this forum and you will walk away from your keyboard with some new insights which I'm sure you have! Keep that tenacious spirit you have there monkeygirl and you will go far .... You are just learning to deal with situations in life that no matter how old you get may never change for you.... the thing about age is that you have far more other things to worry about. This may not make any sense whatsoever .... you "older" members might get what I mean! There is alot to be said for experience!
  3. ....Monkeygirl after reading your post (s) ... you too have to lighten a bit. Your words are those of someone who is trying so desperately to defend her point of view to the point where you're grasping hon. You are not caught in a corner and we are not ganging up on you by no means. Let's keep to the topic in question .... We do appreciate your love of teaching and it is evident in your posts. But you do have to understand that you are still young and probably are not aware of the course that the martial arts seems to be taking in terms of qualified instruction. If classes are to be taught by an assistant or high-ranking students at the school, it is not say they are not not fully qualified to teach, but prospective students should know ahead of time who will be doing the instruction, and if the master instructor will be there along side their "assistants" or "leadership team" to oversee the course of instruction. If you sign on to a school and find out later you have every right to be upset. Choose your schools wisely (everyone should know this, but some do not!).... some people just prefer to have an older- wiser- black belt degrees up to their ying-yang type of instructor, or at least one that drove themself to the dojo. Remember we are all from different styles here in this forum. Some styles more difficult to learn and train in both physically and mentally then others. Some more traditional .... some more modern in their approach both as to its teaching and practice. We must keep an open mind _________________ KarateForums Sensei 1st dan Black Tae Kwon Do CardioKickboxing/Fitness Inst. [ This Message was edited by: KickChick on 2002-05-09 09:16 ]
  4. It all depends on how you eat them .... ... seriously, all good advice ... You can 'read' your body pretty well if you've been training for awhile between the 'hurt so good' sore and the 'oh my god' sore . You know what muscle areas to keep concentrating on if they 'aren't sore' and which to start leveling off on if they are very sore. The body is an awesome machine ,,,, funny how sometimes we pay more attention to the ones (like say the one in front of your face!)
  5. Just kidding! If your school doesn't have that many students then why is it that you need so many assistants. three60roundhouse .... a 27 year old man is not a kid .... (last I checked ) We have a 16 yr. old 2nd dan black that ocassionallly conducts a class. (Which means he "teaches" the entire class from start to finish 1 hour) ..... He is an excellent martial artist and all the adults in our class think his classes are very good! (his dad even thinks so and he's an over 40 green belt!) .... Maybe your "idea" of teaching is entirely different as to how I see it. Our advanced belts often during class time will "assist" lower belts with their forms or one steps , kick/block techniques. Even gold belts will work with white belts. But for a lower belt to "teach" an advanced belt ....
  6. um.... right where we started from there Radok anyway .... everyone is going to have their own opinion on works for them as far as diet and weight training goes but one thing is for sure .... you need to have a "balanced" diet and cut your fat intake as your are defeating the purpose of building muscle --- who will see it with all that fat lying on top! Protein is the key to building muscle and losing bodyfat. Fats should comprise 10-30 % of your calories after you allow for carbs and protein. Of course you need to choose haelthy fats (mono/polyunsaturated) and your omega 3's. If you train hard ... most of your calories should come from carbs. They provide energy and spare protein. Get at least half of your calories from carbs (complex) and whole or minimally processed grains veggies and fruits. Lots of water! one quart for every 1000 calories plus 2 cups before workout and 1/2 cup everty 15 minutes of training. There's lots of great threads in the Health & Fitness forum regarding weight training and diet ... just do a search and you'll come up with alot of tips! Good Luck!
  7. It's not the age that I am concerned with here .... what are the qualifications? Iron you have years of experience (no matter how young you may look) I am currently training for my 2nd degree ... so if you are quite capable of instructing me on all those requirements then you may be "worthy" ... (sorry that just reminds me of Wayne's World" ... "I am not worthy"...) Our adult classes begin at age 16. But we have children in there who are in their 30's and 40's _________________ KarateForums Sensei 1st dan Black Tae Kwon Do CardioKickboxing/Fitness Inst. 8. I happened upon this link today .... For all you Black Belts that want to join the fight against terrorism .... check this out http://www.tman.com/army/assets/images/LogoANA.jpg http://www.tman.com/army/html/faq.html
  9. May I ask what rank you are? .... And does that qualify you to teach? .... maybe to assist (?) Do you conduct classes entirely on your own? I find that hard to believe. Children at our school (brown belt level 3rd degree) can "assist" the children's classes but ... no, are not "teaching" or assisting the adult classes. Full time Instructors (IMHO) should be of at least 3rd/4th deg. On ocassion, I and many other black belts at our school, have conducted a class. It is good experience. Black belts should be taught by Masters at their school in order to progress. Yes, I would not want a child of any rank below me, instructing me ... sorry! The instructor is the person who is going to be guiding your development as a martial artist. You need to feel comfortable with him or her, and feel secure in receiving instruction from them. If you have some uneasiness or a personality conflict with the instructor(s) many students will act upon this and they should. They are paying good money for quality instruction and they should receive it. I am sure you are 'respected' (looked up to and have a good repoire with) by the children in your children classes. People tend to throw that word "respect" around as if it is something to be handed out just because you have been placed in a certain position. Respect is earned .... and as you said, "you're still on the road". Good Luck .... and keep assisting on your Leadership team _________________ KarateForums Sensei 1st dan Black Tae Kwon Do CardioKickboxing/Fitness Inst. 10. It has been said ... Minds are like parachutes. They only function when they are open. Good one Yoda!
  11. I like how SaiFightsMS described how kata should be performed in her post in "I Am Frustated With Lack of Info Master Provides for devlopement" thread .... Although I train in TKD hyungs/forms ... I have found this site helpful as well .... Here are basic core training for kata/patterns. http://home.merlin.mb.ca/~cpetriw/KATA%20EXERCISES.htm ...
  12. .... glad that we helped you out! Once you learn the proper way, you usually end up doing it the way that feels more comfortable for you .... but you need to start somewhere with the basics! Happy Kickboxing! .... why don't they teach this stuff in class?
  13. I am taking this directly from our web site: On average a Tae Kwon Do student will be promoted every 4 months up to Brown Belt. At Brown Belt level, promotion on average is 6 to 8 months. The following minimum requirements apply. 1. Knowledge of required material up to current belt level. 2. Steady attendance. 3. Must have no more than 5 lessons remaining on lesson count at the beginning of the month of promotion. A pre-test is given only to those students who have met requirements #2 and #3, but are not able to fully demonstrate #1. Ability to demonstrate techniques correctly at their current belt level is mandatory. Areas of weakness are identified during pre-test and recommendations are made. Eligibility for promotion is determined by a satisfactory pre-test. Master reserves the right to have final say for promotion eligibility. PRE - TESTING When: First full week of each month during parent viewing. What: How well you know your form. Ability to perform techniques correctly at your belt level. Why: To determine preparedness for testing. Eligibility to test... Pre-test must be satisfactory. Must have a minimum of 25 lessons (white-blue 2 belts) or 55 (brown 1, 2, 3 belts) at the beginning of month before name will be put on test list. If you are eligible to test, you must attend class a minumum of 2 times per week during the month prior to the test. Recently our school has, in an effort to help younger students get into a good habit of practicing their Tae Kwon Do, been passing out practice forms to fill out and have a parents initial. Also we have implemented a new "red stripe" .... a red stripe will be given when a student can properly demonstrate his/her form. A student will only be on test list once this stripe has been received and other testing criteria is met. Testing is done in front of panel of black belt judges (min. of 10) and [arents, friends & relatives. With all of the prerequisites listed above, it is a rare ocassion when a student "fails" or is asked to come back the following month to retest.
  14. ...."even Yoda farts!" ....."and only some chicks deny...." Wow ....everything you ever wanted to know .... but were afraid to ask!
  15. Welcome to KarateForums MBP .... and you too Mamutti! I see a payback coming!
  16. .... to think "I" started this thread! I must be up there with the "twisted top ten" ... anyway, keep 'em coming (the posts I mean!)
  17. Thanks Yoda ....for making the time to post that one! How often you train your abs is far less important than how well you train them! Remember too that weight training bilds the muscle, and a good diet and regular cardio will reduce the fat layer so you can "see" whats underneath. All the ab work in the world does not reduce the flabby tummy!
  18. Welcome to KarateForums janesa! ....TKD familystyle here too! Enjoy the forum!
  19. I do believe that we all here (for the most part) do appreciate one anothers respective styles .... although we do debate one versus another quite often here. Personally, I must say I have learned a great deal here apart from what I already learned about the martial arts in general. For those of us that do crosstrain within martial arts styles there is an even broader knowledge and respect. To be a member of a MA forum is a good step in the right direction to learning more about all styles and learning to appreciate an art outside of your own style. "Never judge a book by its cover .... can be said of people, places and yes, (...the martial arts)
  20. That's a pretty good list considering all the varieties among the styles.... The basics kicks I believed were covered...then variations of the basics such as Twist Kick (inverted roundhouse)? and Rising Kick (front kick w/knee straightened. Then... dropping, jumping, spinning, flipping, skipping, scissor, rolling, double roll.... Now ... you can add jumps/spins and combos among the kicks. Whether it's inside or outside (crescent) or jumping off back or lead leg (round or back) ... 360 or 540 (back, round, outside crescent with an added spin outside crescent) It is almost necessary to jump your kick when performing combos such as hook/round and front/side same leg and front/side each leg throwing a kick; and then again jumping comes into play when covering distance as with the sidekick, round, front and hook. Yes, there as many varieties as stars in the sky (good analogy!) _________________ KarateForums Sensei 1st dan Black Tae Kwon Do CardioKickboxing/Fitness Inst. 21. .... don't we all! If you have familiarized yourself with online forums then you should be able to "see" the warnings signs that were discussed in this article. They are a dime a dozen on the internet and in real life too~!! .... Remember VTG can also stand for "virtual tough girl" too! :pony: KickChick <---
  22. Welcome to KarateForums tenshi! Since I've been here I have heard KarateForums been called many, many things .... now intrigueing is one of them ...
  23. I personally use and like the "PowerLine" (deluxe) bag (filled w/sand) double vinyled to take more impact. We have only 2 of those at our school and about 20 or so of the orig. wavemasters . The orig. wm do tend to get squishy after repeatedly getting kicked & punched. Our school uses ownly the orig. Wavemaster line. Order from Century and because you are a school owner and will most likely be ordering in qty. they will offer you a good pricing and a good warranty .... replacements (usually no questions asked if you need to return for any reason). As far as the bag falling over ... we usually have contests sidekicking up and down floors to see who moves the bag the most distance .... if you knock it down it slows you down so technique is key in kicking the bag! _________________ KarateForums Sensei 1st dan Black Tae Kwon Do CardioKickboxing/Fitness Inst.
