  1. I believe there is a general lack of respect in most everything nowadays...why should the martial arts be any different? ...just playing devil's advocate Deby
  2. Very True Moobrack, Resistance training involving heavy bag work does improve overall strength, but also maintains muscle tone and muscle endurance. The muscles must regularly contract against resistance (the bag) in order to maintain its size, so it is essential to increase your workout regularly to increase the muscle and its strength. Deby
  3. OK...great now we know u are a happy 29 yr old male!!! About the weight training....there are a few guys here that can give you pointers on that....but if you are doing too much than cut down on the reps...try bag work (speed bag or a wavemaster for punching/kicks) Resistance training works the muscle too plus you add cardio with that! Sore is good...a sign of a good workout! Hot baths will help! (or sauna/hot tub) Deby
  4. Kinda like the Korean version of Morticia & Gomez huh?? Swinging my ponytail right back atcha! :pony: Deby
  5. Whenever possible I do believe some Korean should be used in the dojo. In the beginning of class after we do our "student creed"...we will do stretching and pushups....counting is done in Korean (sp)? hana, dual, sett, nett, tasoo, yasso, egulp, yadul, uhup, yeow. (1-10) I can say it...just can't spell it... yes, and we black belts are addressed sah bum nihm. Cheerio, Kin-yay! Deby
  6. Honestly... I cannot see how you can train in the martial arts....for that matter do anything "cardiovascular" if you smoke. I quit 12 years ago...I know it's difficult! I wasn't as health conscious and not involved in martial arts. If you don't want it bad enough the odds of you quitting successfully are pretty bad! Fortunately I quit because I found out I was pregnant. That was a very good reason at the time for me. For you and everyone else - Heart Disease or Death could be good reasons !! I happened to do it "cold turkey"....meaning I threw the pack I had out the car window and that was that! Nowadays there are all sorts of patches and methods to quit. In the states, there is a big campaign to get people to stop smoking. The television commercials alone will scare you! Ever see a lung blackened with nicotine??? YUK!!! Deby
  7. YEEEEOUCH!!!...planted in just the right place!!! ...forgot about them high heels...I spend a majority of my time barefoot..but on occassion sport those "candies" Deby
  8. Steve...Welcome to KarateForums! ...and great advice! I gave Jack that same site to look up...great sample routines you can download for free. I am not one to follow a written routine but some people like to see what they need to accomplish right there in front of them ('specially if they are modifying current workouts or are new to weightlifting) Experimentation is key and don't go into anything like gangbusters (you'll cause injury and yes, we don't want to be out of the dojo for an extended period due to injury incurred by exercise). Gradually intensify...whether it be lifting or running an extra couple miles Again, good advice...keep us posted on your outcome Steve! Deby
  9. Thanks Chris...Suggest that anyone who has a "various" question/comment, post them here! Jack....See how much you have learned since then??? KarateForums Deby
  10. Hi there SubmissionFighter ...Yes, this really is a beneficial forum, glad you're taking advantage of it! Lots of people have been stopping by and looking for routines for muscle, flexibility, toning, cardio or weightloss. We can only tell you what works for us! Without know your age, sex, what you want to target specifically etc.....one can only generalize...and like I've posted before, you need to find what works best for you. When you enjoy what you're doing and see the results (it does take time though)...then make it part of your routine. We can all offer what has worked for us...try it! Eat properly for weightloss. No brainer actually. Cut down on fats & sugar. Cut portions down. Eat early breakfasts and dinners. Plenty of water to curb appetite. Cardio ...I love fitness kickboxing of course cos' I teach it(3 days /week)...but I am getting my heart rate up while working on my technique in the process (killing 2 birds with 1 stone so to speak). Do cardio every morning- threadmill/running, jumping rope something for at least 15-30 minutes to jump start your metabolism for the day. Stretch every morning/every night (and after weight training)...martial artists know this!!! Crucial for kicking height and flexibilty/balance. Good Luck in modifying your workout ! _Deby________________ 1st Deg. TaeKwonDo Black Belt (Moderator of Health & Fitness Forum) This Message was edited by: KickChick on Aug 20, 2001 7:03am
  11. Ken...HONEST...it wasn't me! I am wondering how that could have happened??? Deby
  12. I totally agree with Ken....Knife (as look as you have one tucked somewhere) No matter how big or strong an assailant is I can protect myself. All people repond to the pressure of a blade. One cannot defy the laws of science, gravity and motion. The bigger they are, the harder they fall but the harder it is to make them fall. Everyone bleeds. Anybody can stab another person. That doesn't take much skill. It is not a useful self-defense technique because the person who was stabbed can continue his attack. Stabbing is not effective but cutting is! Fingers don't work well when they've been severed and cutting the sartorial tendon in the thigh and the person is rendered immobile. I would have no problem slicing a muscle or tendon to escape an attacker! I may faint from the blood.... ....that is something I have to work on! Deby
  13. Welcome --H--... took a little while but glad you introduced yourself! Just starting in Aikido...and could use your input. Happy Postin to you! "H" is such an interestingl letter isn't it??? Deby
  14. Welcome Grahamcoleman... I believe we are all in agreement here...'the elbows have it". A guy that I spar is known for his deadly blocking elbows so much so that after I spar him ( ad he's intimidating because of it ) I get at least 1 or 2 bruises. I bruise easily though ...nothing you can do about that ! :pony: Deby
  15. Patrick.... ...I was gone for the weekend and to my surprise when I signed on early this morning I saw "lil' miss ponytail"...awww how sweet. Her mouth is quite big though She's nudging up to mr. cowboy hat (I actually though it was an amish hat but....) Anyway, Goood Work Pat....still not interested in pursuiing martial arts yet??? C'mon after reading all these interesting posts its gotta peak your interest sooner or later!!! Deby
  16. Correct Jack... If you set your blocks improperly the technique is wrong. Upper/Middle Blocks are set with blocking hand coming from under other arm, and lower blocks are set with blocking arm coming from ontop of other arm. Both arms move simultaneously...execution of the block (forearm with palm facing you) and the non-block fist arrives in chamber at the same time for a nice quick SNAP!!! I seriously did mean no question here is stupid!... Deby
  17. This is soooo funny..For the golfer!!! Tiger Woods drives his Volvo into a Gas Station in Cork, on his tour of Ireland. The attendant at the pump; greets him in a typical Cork manner, unaware as to who; the golf pro is. "Top of the marnin to ya." Tiger Woods bends down to pick up the pump nozzle, but two tees fall out of his top pocket onto the ground. "What are dey Son?" says the attendant "They're called tees replies Tiger Woods . "And what would they be for then?" inquires the Cork man. "They're for resting my balls on while I'm driving" says Tiger Woods. "Jaysus", says the Cork man, "Dem boys at Volvo think of everyting" Deby
  18. If you are referring to 'middle block'...the blocking arm comes from under other...no question here is stupid...well Deby
  19. I teach at a privately owned school which does use student billing....I'm not involved in that but we do monitor class attendance with a membership card that the student uses to "scan" when he enters the school and it is logged onto the computer. It also notifys the student when he is due for a stripe(piece of tape on belt)...(we give them to students for every 10 lessons) it does boost the students attendance also. When they reach the required stripes they are ready to pre-test wherein the chief instr. will fill out a form that shows the student what he needs to work on before he does test. Deby
  20. OMG!!!! Don't do those!!!! Ask any personal trainer and they will tell you NEVER do those!!! You can easily dislocate your hip and pull a quadricep muscle in the process....and if you ever pulled a hamstring...the quad muscle is double times worse!!! Deby
  21. You know it's funny...a read somewhere (and I'm not sure if it's true) that in some states in US you have to register with your local police dept. upon receiving your black belt in any martial art. Registering yourself as a deadly weapon...how cool is that??!! Deby
  22. If iamrushman gets a hat I want a ponytail!! Deby
  23. Ditto! Welcome to yet another fellow female martial artist! Deby
  24. ...and thanks Iron on that Balazs site... I've seen that, however it doesn't tell you how fist should be planted when contacting bag. Palm down or facing...??? All that other stuff...I know, believe me I know!!! Deby
  25. Thanks guys... I was doing the hook correctly then...I do all that you say Ken...but I went to a boxing site and they were throwing the hooks with palms facing. I did that during my class on Monday for a change (fitness Kickboxing) performing front hooks double time to bag in that fashion and now my wrist is KILLING ME (wrist was straight however I do think you tend to bend it somewhat with the momentum and having that palm facing you. With palm facing down you can hit with 1st two knuckles more precisely, which I believe is where you want to. Thanks... Deby
