I agree with Chris 100% (thumbs up)... see my quote -- I am still learning to correct my "flaws"...actually they're weaknesses. Practice...practice....PRACTICE! Break down each technique ... use a mirror...videotape yourself....although you are your worse critic it does seem to help! My flaw has always been to look straight ahead doing forms, and to stop sticking my tongue out when I kick (kind of a Michael Jordan trait!).

Awesome Jeter card Patrick. I saved it for my 7 yr. old to see! (actually I am gonna tuck it under my pillow )

Even if you work your obliques (muscles on each side of the torso) until they're rock solid, you still may be left with a layer of fat that hides the muscle underneath. The American Council on Exercise (ACE) assures us that no amount of crunching or twisting will diminish this abdominal fat .. but regular cardiovascular exercise will. There is still no such thing as spot reduction. Typically, people lose weight in their face and upper body first, followed by their abdominals, thighs and buttocks...so you might have to wait awhile to see those love handles start to disappear.

Horsestance punching is usually alt. hands throwing punches...it is both left and right.

Uma to wear Bruce Lee
KickChick replied to KickChick's topic in Martial Arts Gaming, Movies, TV, and Entertainment
Its upcoming...don't know when. I'm not a Tarantino fan....but maybe this one might be good. (?) -
Our school is having a Halloween party...in which we black belts will be performing (showing off) our skills. I want to do a break. Any good ideas? Someone is already doing a fire break (flying side through ring of fire and setting boards aflame for hammerfist). Ice and concrete blocks done in the past too. How about using candy bars as spacers and when I break they pop up in the air and catch them in my mouth? ...nah, highly improbable. Thought maybe there might be something impressive I might do to wow the kiddies

Ok how fast can you punch? For the average martial artist, you should be able to do 3 punches in 1 second (karate style in horse stance) For the advanced it should be at least 5 and if you want to go for the world record...I think its 9

spinning back fist
KickChick replied to Prodigy-Child's topic in MMA, Muay Thai, Kickboxing, Boxing, and Competitive Fighting
The backfist is underestimated by a lot of martial artists. The backfist if done correctly with a whipping motion, is always going to be faster than your fastest punch and can generate equivalent power. Try not to draw back your hand when you start the attack and do not move your shoulders. This is in line with the one inch punch principle where your entire body generates the power. -
Taekwondo is a modern martial art, characterized by it's fast, high and spinning kicks. There are multiple interpretations of the name taekwondo. Taekwondo is often translated as 'the way of hand and foot'. We don't just kick...we also are knowledgeable in hand techniques too (punch & block) however, TKD is kick oriented.

Uma to wear Bruce Lee
KickChick posted a topic in Martial Arts Gaming, Movies, TV, and Entertainment
Hollywood actress UMA THURMAN will be high-kicking and thumping her way through new movie KILL BILL in a BRUCE LEE costume. The pregnant star will wear the same suit the late kung-fu legend wore in his last movie. The upcoming film is directed by QUENTIN TARANTINO, who says, "It was exciting, writing and thinking of Uma's physicality, those long lanky legs and that blonde hair, and her doing animal-style kung fu or using the samurai-style sword. "She'll be wearing the yellow tracksuit of Bruce Lee from GAME OF DEATH." _________________ 1st Deg. My 2 teens could sleep all day if I let them!! When I work I'm up at 6 am but try to get at least 8 hrs in also. Okay...what would you expect from one of the Health & Fitness moderators????This came in my email this morning....don't take it seriously now!!! Q: I've heard that cardiovascular exercise can prolong life. Is this true? A: Your heart is only good for so many beats, and that's it. Everything wears out eventually. Speeding up your heart will not make you live longer. That's like saying you can extend the life of your car by driving it faster. Want to live longer? Take a nap. Q: Should I cut down on meat and eat more fruits and vegetables? A: You must grasp logistical efficiencies. What does a cow eat? Hay and corn. And what are these? Vegetables. So a steak is nothing more than an efficient mechanism of delivering vegetables to your system. Need grain? Eat chicken. Beef is also a good source of field grass (green leafy vegetable). And a pork chop can give you 100% of your recommended daily allowance of vegetable slop. Q: Is beer or wine bad for me? A: Look, it goes to the earlier point about fruits and vegetables. As we all know, scientists divide everything in the world into three categories: animal, mineral, and vegetable. We all know that beer and wine are not animal, and they are not on the periodic table of elements, so that only leaves one thing, right? My advice: Have a burger and a beer and enjoy your liquid vegetables. Q: How can I calculate my body/fat ratio? A: Well, if you have a body, and you have body fat, your ratio is one to one. If you have two bodies, your ratio is two to one, etc. Q: At the gym, a guy asked me to "spot" for him while he did the bench press. What did he mean? A: "Spotting" for someone means you stand over him while he blows air up your! shorts. It's an accepted practice at health clubs; though if you find that it becomes the ONLY reason why you're going in, you probably ought to reevaluate your exercise program. Q: What are some of the advantages of participating in a regular exercise program? A: Can't think of a single one, sorry. My philosophy is: No Pain - No Pain. Q: If I stop smoking, will I live longer? A: Nope. Smoking is a sign of individual expression and peace of mind. If you stop, you'll probably stress yourself to death in record time. Q: Aren't fried foods bad for you? A: You're not listening. Foods are fried these days in vegetable oil. In fact, they're permeated in it. How could getting more vegetables be bad for you? Q: What's the secret to healthy eating? A: Thicker gravy. Q: Will sit-ups help prevent me from getting a little soft around the middle? A: Definitely not! When you exercise a muscle, it gets bigger. You should only be doing sit-ups if you want a bigger stomach. I hope this has cleared up any misconceptions you may have had about trying to live a longer and healthier life. REMEMBER THIS IS JUST A JOKE!!!!!

Think LOW FAT Angus (diet is important!) ...and keep up with the running or any type of aerobic/cardio activity. Did you know that beer causes more fat to settle on your belly. Think ...CRUNCHES! You need to do exercises that work all the muscles in your abs (the rectus abdominis and obliques) from different angles. There are three so-called "planes of motion." When you bend forward, you work the sagittal plane. Bend to the side and you target the frontal plane. Twist your torso and you hit the transverse plane. A basic crunch only works your muscles through one plane of motion...sagittal, which is why you can do them forever and only see a third of the results. Of course, don't give up on crunches. Incorporate moves that hit the other two angles and your abs will be much leaner. Good Luck Hon! _________________ 1st Deg. Need sparring tips!!!
KickChick replied to Kickbutt's topic in MMA, Muay Thai, Kickboxing, Boxing, and Competitive Fighting
Hi Lori! I think we've all been intimidated at one time or another in sparring.... and that is what it is-- intimidation. Sparring is also "mental" ... you need to prepare physically of course but then again you also have to prepare mentally. Look into your opponent's eyes...look strong...FEEL strong (even if you are a bit intimidated). Go in headstrong....and WATCH...very important to study that certain someones sparring techniques and find their weakness...and act on it! I have to laugh... _________________ 1st Deg. God Bless America! ... we have always been one nation under God, indivisible with liberty and justice for all! Give thanks to God, Allah, Buddha, or whoever you think is holy that you are still here and able to touch your loved ones and share your life with them. We all need something spiritual in our lives to ward against the evil that is invading all of our lives at the moment! I think we are all tired of trying not to step on anyone's toes because of their beliefs! Dammit you all need to believe in something!!!

Are you having trouble keeping balance on lead leg roundhouse kicks or rear legged? You drop one of your hands when executing a roundhouse kick. The reason is for both leverage and added power. For the lead side roundhouse kick drop the lead hand, the same is true for the rear legged roundhouse kick. Roundhouse kicks from the lead leg are naturally weaker because they do not benefit anywhere near as much from the body's rotation during the kick. When the lead hand "drops" it does not actually just drop, but is swung. The swing is to generate additional power while pivoting and help the you maintain your balance. The swing arm can be used to interfere with your opponent. You are sticking it in his face and blocking his punches or guarding against a kick. The arm drops, but the shoulder does not! Leaning away from the kicking leg adds more of the body's weight to the force of the kick and gets the your head OUT OF THE WAY of a counterstrike. To elbow train just do horizontal or vertical elbow strikes on focus mitts as fast as you can (alternate sides each strike). If you do it fast enough, it starts to sound like like a train chugging along... Deby _________________ 1st Deg. .... I did not write this but I thought I would share this with you all! "A public secret amongst the people who practice one kind or other of Martial Art is that the uncomfortable and embarrassing feeling of a fart coming up (down) occurs more often in the dojo that outside of it. When the feeling is there it tends to seriously disrupt the unification of mind and body. There are two ways that can happen. One is that you feel it coming and try to prevent it from erupting so hard that you can't concentrate on anything else, specifically the sensei or the partner you work with. This attempt to not fart will fail, as we all know. You see, after a while the second way for a fart to distort the unification of mind and body will reveal itself and that is the fart itself coming out. This always takes place when delivering a kick, punch, or during another sudden movement. This is only prevented by sitting down and not moving until very silently the methane has slipped out. But people will wonder, and then know, so the effect will be the same as farting aloud. As said before, during a motion of the body the gas will erupt in a disorderly manner, causing you to focus on the entire dojo focusing on you. This situation is best dealt with by turning it into a learning experience. The trick is to completely ignore the fart and the effects it has on the people around you. Let the world be the world without affecting your inner peace. The ability to ignore farts is in fact one step further on the long road of unification of mind and body. The person who is able to disarm and eliminate a dangerous opponent and at the same time fart without wincing a muscle is surely a master. Strong is the man who can fart without distorting his inner strength. If you feel weak and do not want to bother yourself with this exercise, remember to pay attention what you eat before practice. Eating a sauerkraut meal beforehand will give you more chance to exercise unification of mind and body than you dreamt of. I will at this time not go into using a fart as an assault weapon.
