How will the media and the public view UFC 168?
sensei8 replied to DWx's topic in Pro Fighting Matches and Leagues
I don't think that the sport will suffer because our drive-by media write about what they write about in the way that they write it, and the way that they write it is to sell. Grab the attention of the reader, and that makes them money!! -
Learning curves of said students can be challenging, to say the least. Albeit, an instructor have to teach the individual and not the group.

One will need Benevolence if an interested buyer of said business expects you to have it. That thin line, blurs often!!

What makes traditional...traditional?
sensei8 replied to devil dog's topic in Instructors and School Owners
One's perception!! That, imho, makes it tradition. -
Hands down my favorite quote from the whole video. It really says it all for me.What Mr. LeBell speaks about is solid, however, not all MAists are willing to not criticize, for whatever the reason(s). Sad, but true. As a teacher I had likes to say "They're still on the journey to be a Martial Artist, just like you and me. We're just a little further down the road."I like that.I like that, too!!

As caveman-like that it might be, Brian, my solution, at the time, was to put it on a large cutting board' this might work for you. However, Hobby Lobby, and stores like them, might have the frame you need for a fair price. I'm too stupid and/or too unwilling to change my caveman-like ways. But, change is inevitable, and it's time to join the modern world. Maybe.

They don't have to be past their physical prime. It's just that, all in a nutshell, opinions of the MA, therefore, the opinions of MAists for a certain "frame" to be held up to, and if one's not meeting the expectations of those that view said "frame", then they are cast aside as either good or bad. Stereotyping in the MA happens way to often, and in that, it's that stereotyping that makes it quite difficult to see the forest because of the trees. It's easier to tear down someone, then building them up properly!!

Well of course I would hope the 8 year old could prove himself both in knowledge and in skillset irrespective of his age. Otherwise he shouldn't really have the belt should he? I'm of the opinion anyone, regardless of age, should be awarded a rank if they check all the boxes and meet all criteria. Out of interest, at what dan rank do you say someone becomes a master? In my style it's at 7th dan however in some styles a master title is given at 4th dan. Our's is at 5th dan. I'm not crazy about it, but it is what it is. Our's is as well, 5th Dan, I too, aren't so crazy about it either because, like most things in the MA, Master, well, imho, it's subjective, to say the least.

Well, possibly the problem in Dallas isn't Romo. Tonight's Dallas QB, and it wasn't Romo, threw 2 INTERCEPTIONS. Can't win a game of the magnitude by throwing 2 interceptions. The problem, imho, is that the Cowboys are cursed to never return to the Super Bowl in my life time. Good win Eagles; you deserved it!!

I think this could be a part of the issue if anyone can achieve 1st dan in such a short time and young age. I know a young man that is a black belt after 3 years of training and only 8 years on this earth. So what will this say about his 2nd, and 3rd degree promotion and so on? At some point he will be another young master. I agree that the proof is on the floor, but at what point is the line drawn. Can an 8 year old defend himself if attacked by a untrained 11 year old? Can he demonstrate kata or basics at the proper level? If so great, if not start a junior ranking system. Of course this varies from one org to another. I'll respect it either way. Just asking for your valued opinions. On the floor; there is no line to draw, nor is there any drawn line!!

Traditional MA; No Longer Respected!?!
sensei8 replied to sensei8's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Like I've said, it's not the technique that's ineffective, but, imho, it's the practitioner that's ineffective in its execution. Imho!! -
Recently I was scanning through Iain Abernethy's latest stream. And I found this... http://iainabernethy.co.uk/content/kata-movie While it's being filmed, it touts an opening date of October 2014. I think it would be worth a look at, if the needed financials are meet for production and the like. Seems an interesting movie. Once released, if released, I'll be checking it out.

UFC 168....WHO WILL WIN?
sensei8 replied to quinteros1963's topic in Pro Fighting Matches and Leagues
A win is a win...Weidman wins!! Sorry to hear that Silva broke his leg on a check kick...OUCH!! Career ending injury I think... did not look pleasant to saw the least! You might be right, if his career isn't over, it's going to be awhile before he gets back. Doctors say that a broken bone heals even stronger. Kind of like a wield makes two pieces stronger once made into one piece. -
UFC 168....WHO WILL WIN?
sensei8 replied to quinteros1963's topic in Pro Fighting Matches and Leagues
A win is a win...Weidman wins!! Sorry to hear that Silva broke his leg on a check kick...OUCH!! Rousey showcased, again, her Judo skills over and over, her timing is solid. Good win, and while I do understand why she refused to shake hands with Tate at the end, she still could've shown some sportsmanship. -
I understand. I wasn't getting on with a debate either. I was just informing those who weren't aware of what the basic differences were between the two, and that both types are effective, imho.

Might have upset the neighbours
sensei8 replied to mal103's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Interesting mix! At least you both worked well within the space parameters allowed. In that, I agree that finding opposing time slots would benefit both. Just last month, I was going to host a Rape Prevention seminar at our local community center, but I was denied because..."I've heard that these types of activities involve a lot of yelling and screaming and stuff, and I'm afraid that that would disturb the knitting class, being held at the same time, across the hall, but if you can guarantee that you'll do nothing like that, we can consider it. After all, that knitting class has been meeting in that same room for much too long to ask them to reschedule their time, and I'd never ask them to find a different time and/or available room within our center. You know, they were here first, as unfriendly as that seems." I understood their reasoning's, but I told them that I couldn't guarantee a quiet class because being very loud and emitting sharp piercing noises, well, it's part of the prevention element, and in that, students would be required to be forceful with their loud voices with things like, STOP/NO, and some other type of LOUD YELLING. At that, she seemed startled, that's when I told her..."See, the YELLING CAN be disturbing, and that's the point when ones being raped or attacked." -
Solid post!! I think that while the word "master" is used too often, it's used too often because either one doesn't understand the true meaning behind said word, and/or, it's because they don't know any other expressive word, and/or, it's because they were told that word by someone close to them, and/or, they have too much self-aggrandizement issues. For whatever the reason(s) may or may not be, I agree, it's a word that's used much too often.

Being in a style that's "soft" VS "hard" isn't a bad thing in either way. By that I mean, if you're in one of them, your style isn't weak or inferior or dominating or any other descriptive label. How one deals with said attacker is how ones style attaches itself on one or the other terminologies. A hard technique meets force with force, while a soft technique uses attacker's force to the attackers disadvantage, not to romantic, but right to the point.
