2. Hmm my dojo is carpeted and we train bare foot, that is odd ... Sorry I have never worn any training shoes and any advice I could give you would be uneducated, so good luck hopfully someone can help you
3. Hmmm not to sure where or how I came up with LeaF as a name, maybe it has something to do with me being a Toronto Maple Leafs fan, but I use it everywhere so if you see LeaF don't hesistate to say hello
4. yea we don't use music at all with the exception of tai chi classes. We have nice slow oriental music in the back ground (along with some incense) to help create an atmosphere appropreate for meditation. I like listening to music when I work out
5. I have had ariel kicks done upon me and against other and I find them extremely effective , if done correctly. You can without much effort send your oppenant flying several feet backwards which gives you the oppertunity to run away or if you too slow do further damage. I do use spining kicks on the odd ocasion. I generally only use them if I find my self off balence or with my back turned. Now as for the poll I believe high kicks are extremely useful espically when used in combinations. Personally I like do a couple things with them. I like doing a low kick to the knee followed immedaitly with a high roundhouse kick to the side of the head with the same leg. I also enjoy praticing high front kicks to the lower jaw/ neck/throat. If your flexible you can do one of these kicks at fairly close distances, after a few body shots, ie punches, followed by a high front kick to the jaw is also very affective, and if your not that flexible strike the solar plexs causing your oppenant to bend over gasping, that way you don't have to lift your leg up too high to kick/knee them in the head. So yes I believe if done properly high kicks can kick @$$. Thank you
6. That was awsome!! Great article KickChick thank you very much for posting it I can't say I agree with everything but thats ok and fortunatly not everything there has changed in all the dojos, we still wear white gis with a simple patch. I am definatly going to write this down none the less, thanks alot (I hope it didn't take you too long to type it all out )
7. Fair enough I think I understand what you were trying to get at a little better now And congrats on the yellow belt
8. This may be helpful for those of you who are having trouble getting pictures up, this is how I did it. Rather then using the script under the picture I just right click the picture, then you'll see address (URL) and an address. Copy the address and then paste it in between the two IMG thingys here in the forum....You all probably knew this but since so many people were having trouble thought I'd tell you how I did it
9. It depends where you hit them. A throw can be excuted in certain ways to prevent serious injury to your oppenant and merely get him/her out of your way
10. It seems like I may be all alone here but personally I prefer if my oppenant attacks first. In many sitautions you could prevent possible injury(to yourself and you oppenant) if you just wait for them to attack because many a time an oppertunity presents itself leaving you a way to exit thus preventing a fight all together, or they are just all talk and nothing really goes down. There are several other reasons I like it if my oppenant strikes first. Firstly you can tell how well trained they are or proficent with fighting. For instance their may be a drunk in a bar you is bothering you. Well rather then going right ahead and kicking him in the chin which can cause serious injury as someone pointed out if you let him attack you may come to the realization that he can barly keep himself standing and a simple throw to the side can slove the situation. The also helps when dealing with some of the legal aspects of situations. If they throw first then you can gauge yourself so you do not demonstrate "excessive force". Lastly I like defending first because assuming you are quick enough to block there are tons of openings available when a person strikes that were just not present before they attacked. oh well thats my two cents
11. but should this standard be held for the mentally disabled. It is impossible for some of these people to come any where near to these standards. So should they have their own standards, No because each cases is unqiue and different and it would not only be immpossible the try to come up with special standards but it would also be incrediablly unfair. So are you then saying the the martial arts should not be open to the mentally disabled. I don't agree with that either. Because the martial arts can have profound influance and effect on these people's lives, It can help teach them things that we don't even realize the importance of. I think the martial arts can have a very positive effect on these peoples lives, and isn't that what the martial arts are all about. The arts are not really about learning how to fight, or exercise, or even expanding our knowledge, it is about instilling self-confidence with in us and being happy about who we are and the world around us and this is done through learning self defense techniques, getting in shape/exercise, and expanding our knowlege about the world around us. So this is why I do not believe in having a standard in the respect of the mentally disabled because each person has a different degree of their disablity and standards simple do not work here. Thank you

pet??

I have a completely white short haired cat named "miss kitty"
13. I only know of 1 good book on thios topic (it may be difficult to find) but here it is The filipino martial art by Inosarto (again it may be hard to find due to the fact it was published soo many years ago but this is the only book I read on this topic) Good luck I can offer many more suggestions if you want something on the other weaponed arts (specfically kobudo)
14. oh yes absolutely from my expirence bunkai(Pratical applications of movements found in katas) Always seems to be part of a test.
15. I like the fact that my dojo is not air conditioned, teaches you to train in all conditions
16. stay away from the mcdonalds
17. ok here is mine.... http://quiz.sereine.net/img/aim.gif You're AIM, probably the most popular instant messenger out there. The bad thing is that you're run by a bunch of corporate *, but what isn't nowdays? http://quiz.sereine.net/img/crunchie.gif You're sweet at first, but like all good things, people get sick of you after a while. One good (or bad, depends how you look at it) thing though: you're not available in the US. http://www.thevishal.com/quiz/coke.gif Cool Patrick I don't know where you people find this stuff P.S. My favorite result is the crunchie is it true you guys don't have crunchie down there?
18. I have heard many theories on the uses of the sai... http://www.student.kuleuven.ac.be/~m9209392/Saihistory.htm http://www.thekarateacademy.com/history/weapons.htm#Sai http://www.kenshin-kan.com/weapon.html each on of these sites presents a different theory altough there is a nother which I read somewhere but teds to be less common. A chickens head may have been placed between two prongs which where then placed in the soil to help hold the chickens head in place while it was killed. so yea believe what you may and hopefully you will find these sites helpful altough I believe they were a farming tool. I say this because if they weren't their existence you have not been allowee in okinawa and it would have seemed very unlikly this art would be pratice in together with the other weapons that help forumlate what we know today as kobudo
19. Yea I have never seen someone over 3rd dan compete in karate tounaments, although sometimes in betwwen events there will be a break in which the ranking blackbelts do a demonstration and that is pretty cool to watch, but I guess they are not really competeing
20. personally I don't allow myself to be concerned with other people. I do not compare myself to the people I train with. I do not think it would take away from my belt, because if I know I have worked hard for it and deserve it that how hard other people work for their rank is irrelivant because I know I deserve to be where I am. Although I say this I have never really been in a situation where I don't feel the people who have their belts don't deserve them (well maybe once there was this samll woman...not that I have a problem against women she was just an underachiever and always did worse then everybody else) but I try not to let these things bother me and just focus on myself.
21. Wow that was interesting...Sounds like it was written by a biologist rather than a martial artist... This I disagree with... I believe through repitition of the basics the mind will become acustumed to the movements and in time will automaticly react to any situation and apply that movement. I believe that they will apply the movement to adjust to their surrounding circumstances and environment. Oh well thats just my take....
22. I think a roundhouse kick to the head can be pretty devastating
23. I have a question about the polls. How many options did you allow us to add. Once I tried to make a poll with like 15 options and it said that was too many. So then I looked up the faq and it said the administrator sets that max number of options. So what are the max number of options? (figured this might be a suitable place to ask it )
24. Cool! Good job Patrick
