I am not sure I have never had this "pain" in my chest. But yes it is true you must breath from your diaphram which is located around your stomach. You should be able to visual see or feel your stomach increase in size when you breathe in and decrease when you breath out....

Christian Martial Artist ??

I am also Catholic and attend a catholic school and chruch.. I have had a different response from teachers then you 360. Quite a few of my teachers train in the MA and one of them runs a dojo out of my school .. I didn't join karate because of religion but I think my training has got me thinking about many things and iin fact I think it has strenght my beliefs (not just religious ones) and morals ... Now I don't think the big guy has any trouble with martial arts training, as long as we do it for the right reasons I don't know about the other arts but the ultimate goal of karate is perfection of the character of it's participates -
I love my art , Goju ryu Karate-do, for everything it is, one thing that I like about it is it's balence of Hard and Soft. Be as hard as the world forces you to be. Be as soft as the world allows you to be.

How many weapons can you list that used to be farm equipment
LeaF replied to BlueDragon1981's topic in Martial Arts Weapons
hmmm...I do understand that Okinawa was not too rich in iron and many metals but they did have much trade going on with china and Japan so they could have imported it easily and concievable produced zai at a price resonably low if they bought raw meterials in large mass... one of the web sitees I listed in my previous post seems to agree with this being a possiblity the site says... Altough it may have been important there is no arguing that many early versions of the sai have been found in okinawa... Now if they were not farm instruments you could say that they were developed solely as weapons to fight the samurai, well I see many problems with this. Firstly how did they get to Okinawa if a metal weapons were baned.... Sure they couple have snuck a couple pairs in but why bother when sneaking zai when swords where much more a common weapon and a weapon people knew how to use already, why would they not just have snuck swords.... And if they were weapons not farm tools how would the okinawans justify there existance... I mean they couldn't just have them lying around their houses without a reason, and even if they were kept secret why bother... Why bring in this completely foriegn weapon that they would have to come up with a brand new fighting system for, when they could bring in a sword, a weapon that was much more common before the metal ban, and that many more people knew how to use, if they had to keep them both secret why choose something new over something known..... Of coarse there is no solid answer and surely cannot tell you what is true. Perhaps Tobias you could tell me further why it is impossible to concieve that the sai could not merely be an imported farm instrument during a time period when trade between china, japan and okinawa was a common thing Share some more ideas you have and other possiblities [/b] -
I am quoting the discription of the club I don't really see or understand why the club should be limited to women, I mean if some guys came up with a club for men only that would be concidered sexist... I mean really what could women possibly talk about shotokan that wouldn't have nay realivence to men training in the same art...Are we going to have a female only forum on these boards too just because there is sooo much out there that only woemn can understand and communicate...frankly I find this insulting perhaps someone could explain the reasoning behind it to me

perhaps this is a little late to respond to this buit anyway... Some things that appear not to be dangerous can be.... I understand what you are saying but I tend to take a more cautous approach... If I get one shot on him and he has none on me then that is far better then him having 5 shots on me and me having 6 on him ... I am not a big huge guy but I do believe I am very quick and being slim helps this and perhaps our different body types helps explain why we believe differently

LeaF replied to LeaF's topic in Martial Arts Gaming, Movies, TV, and Entertainment
Thanks KickChick I'm going to look into that one -
I got into teaching and assisting not by choice, it is required as part of our traing once you reach a certain level. I kinda like it, and was really looking forward to doing it I found I learned alot about my self from my students

well each ranks test gets considerably harder but I will tell you what I had to do for my 1st kyu grading, I will try to go into as much detail as possible... ok we start everyone lines up we do our opening cerimony (bows and stuff) Then the lowest ranked people stay upstairs while everyone else goes into the basement (change rooms pratice area library). Since I was going for my 1st kyu I was last (black belts have their own gradings) So your stuck down he for a couple hours and believe the pressure really builds up, you get so nervous and the anticipation is enough to kill a horse... Anyways when my grading begins we bow then we begin. We are instructed through a number a complex basics which really exhausts you (takes about 20-30 mins non stop). Then lets see.... We do some leg work. First is five spinning hook kicks on both legs to get you a little dizzy. Followed by 15 sets of 7 stationary kicks. (which is basicly you have to do 7 kicks, which are told to you at that moment, 15 times without putting your foot down. Then we do a tai chi set (chin style). Next we have our katas, we normally just go through 5 or 6 followed by some foriegn ones which we should learn at seminars and stuff... Next is a bunch of knife self defenses followed by some bunkai... Then there is sparring, we spar 4 different people on at a time, then 3 groups of 2 on 1s and then a few 3 on 1s.... Lastly we have to stand up all by ourselves (btw this was in front of 5 or 6 bb, a few brown belts and an audience) and are asked tons of questions one after the other for about 5 mins. So in total we are up for about 1 hour 30 mins to 1 hour 45... And then the worse part.... We have to wait 2 weeks before we hear the result in which time we cannot mess up to show that we did not just get lucky that one day of our grading and that was my brown belt grading (I probably missed some stuff) abviously it gets 10 times harder when you go for that 1st dan

What is Everyones Actual Rank and Form Of Martial arts?
LeaF replied to TKD_McGee's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
second degree bb or second belt...either way Good Luck -
well I mean what could they have done? I don't think leaving them together is an option... I suppose they could have forced the operation at birth if that was not done, perhaps the sooner the operation is done the better chance they have for life

To Bow or not to Bow (?)
LeaF replied to KickChick's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
The Bows have nothing to do with religion it is merely a custum used to show respect, like shaking hands. If people have a problem with certain custums they should not be involved in activity that uses them -
I answered this to the best of my ablility in the other thread you did on this topic see link, sorry if it is not useful it is all I could find http://www.karateforums.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=3843

Body Types
LeaF replied to three60roundhouse's topic in Choosing a Martial Art, Comparing Styles, and Cross-Training
This is one of the great things I love about Goju ryu, it seems to fit all types of people. I am 5'9" and weigh about 150 lbs. So I am by no means a big guy but I am able to take advantage of my body type. On the other hand we have some guys that are 6'9" and weigh 300 lbs and Goju allows them to adjust some of the techniques to their advantage. It holds a good mix of different elements. For instance a bigger person might have a difficult time doing some of the jump kicks but on the other hand a smaller person might a more difficult praticing some of the throws or resistance work we do. I do agree though that some arts were designed for people of a certain build but through my expirence Goju does not appear to be one of these arts -

I live in Canada...free heathcare so I say let the government pay to try to give these people a normal life. Could you imagine living life with someone attached to your head, so I believe there is no choice, and as for a cure I think it would be easier , quicker, and less expensive to just perfect the opertations required to separate the babies rather then trying to come up with a cure
