  1. Have a look JJ figher. Very different from the BJJ you do. However always check the credability of anyone that says they have trainined with O Sensei, or any of the big Aikido names. Kyokushin fighter, is a nasty mixture of Goju Ryu, Shotokan, Judo and Mauy Thai. Its doing really well in K1 tournements and the like. It was created by the "God Hand" himself Mas Oyama. Here's a useful link. http://www.kyokushinmail.com/koya/Kyokushin.htm
  2. I have never heard of Kodenkan Jujutsu. However it could be one of the styles that O Sensei Ueshiba studied before creating Aikido. I always thought that Kenpo came from Shaolin, not Jujutsu? Anyway go with what you have a feeling for, you wont know whether you really like it or not until ya try it. But like KFcharlie said, Aikido takes along time be able to apply. JJ styles in general take less time. Just did a quick search on the net and found this link: http://www.kodenkan.com/ http://www.okugi.org/ Hope this helps. HEY ZERO, This style is the brother style to Small Circle JJ. They both have the same line to Henry S Okazaki.
  3. I agree with Omni on this one. Just dont tell um. But I know what ya mean Blackbelt.
  4. Venezolano can say what he wishes. But his comment is neither respected or appreciated and if he does not like the facts that I presented to him then he should not read them. Venezolano, I am not trying to bash BJJ. As a style I have great respect for it. My intention was not to turn this thread into a style slagging match. But your comments of BJJ supremacy are not true. Other than style bashing what was the actual aim of this thread?
  5. Most Aikido styles incorporate some Ki training. So perhaps its not for you. However Judo does not emphasis it so much. But good luck in your search.
  6. Conratulations on your promotion. What style did you get it in?
  7. LOILOI44, dont worry about it. From what I have heard he is a amazing practioner. My Sensei is an 8th Dan and she has been studying for some 35 years. Any Sensei with that sort of dedication always has an impact on oneself. Her teacher and husband has been doing Aikido for nearly 50 years. He was the Unchideshi of Abbe Sensei for 15 years and student with the legendary Tohei Sensei for 10. I could tell you some of the stuff I have seen, but many just pass it off as either luck or some fixed demostration. Good luck in your studies.
  8. Hey Insanity. There is an old saying about Aikido and Aikijutsu. "If your smiling during training your doing Aikido." I would say that Aikijutsu is a little more complete on the offensive techniques. I really like the style, but I prefer Aikido. A great book is "The Hidden Roots of Aikido by Omiya". Lists the techniqes shows picture etc. Really nicely put together. Aikido has few blocks, well oringal Aikido anyway. Aikido defence henges around movement more than static blocking techniques. But once you have good good ma-ai (true distancing), then they have you come to you. However there are some guys on https://www.aikiweb.com that can give you lots more information on that topic than me. Insanity, just stick with your training and the answers will come.
  9. If you wanna make this an issue between Judo and BJJ. Just look at the 2 big cheeses in each style. Helio and Kimura. Now who won that match on the ground? It was Kimura. So a Judoka defeated a BJJ player on the GROUND! Amazing, that must mean that Kimura studied BJJ? However I would agree with LOILOI44 this time, I would take a Kodokan Judoka over most other grapplers.
  10. I agree with BlackI its a really complete system. Oh and welcome back BlackI long time no see. However, you could cross train in an area of Hapkido that you really like. For example if you really like the ground work in Hapkido do some Judo or BJJ. If you like the Kicking do TKD, or the striking do some Shotokan, Kyokyshin or MT etc.
  11. JJ fighter, I dont know whether you have heard of Kyokushin, but its brutal at all ranges. Anyway Mantis, just make sure that you are quicker and more powerful than your opponent.
  12. LOILOI44, I dont study martial arts either for their religious aspects, I take an interest in everything. This give me a broad knowledge from which I can argue a point rather than just use belittling comments about my lack of publishing and age. Unfortunately being only a 5th Kyu I dont think my book would be very popular in the Aikido genre. Trust me LOILOI44, I dont critise blindly, its just that I have far far better books in my collection than his. I am not cristising his Aikido ability, it would not be hard for him to be better than and anyone with a 7th Dan deserves my respect and he has it. However, if you are going to write a book about a subject you have a passion for, then perhaps he should take a little more time over it. For better examples of Aikido texts I suggest "Best Aikido by Doshu K Ueshiba", "The Essence of Aikido by O Sensei", "Aikido, by K Tohei" and "Aikido and the Dynamic sphere". Those are my favs, but there are plenty of other good ones. I agree that all styles of Aikido have there place, its just a shame to go against the wishes of its creator. Hope you find this enlightening.
  13. Hey Dustin, well Aikido is for everybody. It depends on what you are looking for in a style. Aikido is a pretty complete system in defence, what I mean by that is that you have something to use against ANY attack. However (in the style I study), we dont resist at all, strength through relaxation. This is what Aikido is all about. Like Omnifinite said it does not sound that Aikido is for you. If you list your 5 goals in martial arts I bet one of use could point you in the right direction. Best of luck in your search.
  14. A UESHIBA QUOTE! YOU ARE TRUELY WISE KICKCHICK!
  15. You tell me to not judge what I dont know, yet you get the religon wrong that Aikido is based on. The wonder of double standards. I have that very book in front of me and it is far far from satisfactory. This is far better book by Lee Ah Loi "Tomiki Aikido" unfortunately it is no longer published. As for Tomiki Sensei, I cant say that I am a big fan. I think anyone that goes against the express wishes of a dieing man is a disgrace. And this is what Tomiki Sensei did when O Sensei Ueshiba was dieing. However Tomiki (Shodokan) is slow returning to the Aikido fold and not doing sport Aikido, which is against what Aikido was created for. No offence, but I know my Aikido texts....... however my Aikido itself leaves a little to be desired.
  16. What statement were you referring to?
  17. If every warrior perfected their style, then they would be equal. I do believe that some styles are better at some things than others. But a style is only good if the people studying it can apply it.
  18. oh Mikey Mikey Mikey. I disagree. But like you said, thats a different topic.
  19. That book is awful, it looks like Prof Higashi put it together over night. Remember all Aikido was created by O Sensei, the others including the style I study are spin offs. Just so that you know LOILOI44, O Sensei was not Buddist he was Shintoist and believed in the teachings of the Omoto-kyo.
  20. I disagree completely with that magikchiongson. A martial art will only be as good as the person that practices it.
  21. I think having your back turned in some cases especially Judo throws (ei Tai Otoshi) does give you a great advantage in leverage. If you get is right, then it will pay off, if you dont, then you might be dead. I dont like my choices.
  22. Well, it depends on what you consider effective. I found karate much easier to apply. An Oisuke can be applied from day one, ofcourse it takes time to truely get fluid in. Aikido is much the same, I think Locks in general are harder to learn and even harder to apply to a fully resisting oppenent. As I study Aikido more and more I release how little I actually know. To be honest, I think in any of TMA you have to have been doing the style until around 2nd Dan, to have the power, fittness, balance and technical ability to truely apply the style.
  23. I guess this is TMA at their best, when your oppenent holds you in such high reguard that they dont even want to fight you.
