  1. Well.........Aikido is a better grappling art. Just kidding Judo is really amazing. From what little I know about it, and it is a little. You are taught basic hand, hip, leg and body throws. As well as lots of breakfalling and Ne-waza (ground work). I dont know of any amazing sites, but Amazon sells lots of good books. Especially any of the "master class" books published by Ippon. Good Luck.
  2. Excellent, good for you. Its a great style. If you need any pointers or help just PM me. Chris.
  3. Kirves, I agree, Aikido is never going to compare with BJJ or Judo ground work. Just trying to tell Venezolano that Aikido does however have a wide spectrum of techniques. "Aikido attacks - now there's one more oxymoron! (just foolin' around)" This is strange perconception that people have about Aikido that I dont really understand. You'll just have to take it on faith that if you get caught with my Yokomenuchi (sideways throat strike) then you going to know about it. Kirves, just out of interest what do you study?
  4. Well, I cant speak for Aikijujutsu. As for Aikido, I think it would go very well. For a number of reasons. One Shotokan is largely offensive and Aikido is largely defencive. Shotokan is very block orintated and Aikido is very evasively orintated. Aikido has powerful striking techniques and amazing biomechanics that would help you to understand Shotokan even better. Aikido would also help you to see the various locks and throws hidden in the Shotokan Kata. Just IMHO ofcourse. Having done Shotokan and doing Aikido, I think it would mix well, just make sure that you know what your "base" art is. If you have any questions about Aikido, please dont hesitate to ask. Its my mission to get you all to come under the wonderful power of Aikido. I am sure that Kyle-San can tell you more of the benefits of Aiki-jujutsu. If not go to: http://www.e-budo.com/vbulletin/index.php?s=1149731aac5e7b1a1fc3c99af47009c0 There is a Aikijutsu section there where you could ask any questions about the style.
  5. I have always concidered "grappling" to be against someone that is holding you, rather than striking you. For example if someone grabs you in a "bear hug" style hold, I would consider that grappling. Or perhaps something more like a grasp on both shoulders and choking, which Aikido has many defences against. Its true that Aikido does not have ne waza (ground work) or clinch work, mainly because they are not really Aikido attacks. Although I have seen suwari waza (kneeling techniques) used in ground fighting positions and from what you guys call "the guard". I am still pretty new to Judo/grappling terminology as I have not really started as yet. I guess if you think of grappling in a BJJ or Wrestling sence then it is not very similar at all, but like I said before I think of it as escaping from grasping like attacks. (although we do do strikes to).
  6. Oh right fair enough, Judo then. As I said before.
  7. Yeah, it was amazing the guy went blue. I wish I could do that. Well maybe in 40 years or so. In answer to kungfufan, I believe that it can be done, especially in the calm atmosphere of the dojo. However when facing an unpleasant character in the street it becomes more difficult. When my Sensei does such an attack and stops the attacker from breathing, it is a combination of factors. One is Ki (which I believe excists), second the a great power of the blow itself, and third the the area in which the blow hits. When it comes to Aikido Pressure points, they are not taught as specific places, like in Tai Chi for example. The attacks are in such places where there are a collection of points, which in a "real" fight you are more likely to hit, than one specific point on the back of the neck. I think pressure point and nerve locking is very real, because it is what Aikido is based on in terms of science. But it takes many years to become so profictent that you could do it against a fully resisting real attacker. Hope this helps.
  8. What sort of grappling are you talking about? Because Aikido is a grappling style, if it can be stylised at all. It definately is not a striking style.
  9. Always learn them all, or you wont know what ones you can and cant use.
  10. Go watch an Aikido lesson and you'll see. I am talking about stand up, we only do kneeling grappling, none of this ground lark. Thats what the Judo is for.
  11. I agree with omnifinite, you have to see what you want from martial arts. Here is a general guide "Martial arts" - Long time to get good at, very complete and complicated Philosphies. Aikido, Japanese Jujutsu, Ninjutsu, Karate, Hapkido, TKD, Gung Fu in general especially Tai Chi, Hsing I and Ba Gua and the external styles like Wing Chun, Shaolin......etc "Martial Sports" - takes less time to get good at, very competitive. TKD, Judo, BJJ MT, western boxing and western kick boxing. "Self Defences arts" - usually very easy to learn, but alot of dication needed (That goes for all Martial Arts in general). Jeet Kun Do, Mauy Thai, Brazillian Jiu Jitsu, certain styles of karate, Krav Maga.......etc This is, ofcourse, only my opinion and it varies from individual style and taste in MA. Good Luck in your search.
  12. Feelings has nothing to do with this! This is Martial arts! You have to weigh up what you want more. Perhaps he sees you as making a good move first and he is a little jealous.
  13. WOW, thats a big task. I have no idea, most Aikidoka have embraced modern mass production methods. Ninjutsu is an amazing style. Just an idea but is there a website that you could email? Perhaps you Shidoshi could tell you of some.
  14. In Karate, Riped my toe nail off when I was putting the mats away! Really nasty, blood went all over my dogi, so I just told my friends that it was in an amazing battle me verus 5000 others and I won and that was their blood. They did not believe me. Nothing in Aikido yet, sometimes me knee's, sometimes wrists and shoulders. But they only ache for a little while. Smashed into the floor a few times and been very close to breaking my nose. All in all I am still in one piece.
  15. Well, in that case I ment every word of it. MWHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAA!
  16. The thing to remember is that if you are going to use techniques from other styles make sure that they are right. If you teach throws for example and the dynamics are not right you could not only hurt yourself, but those you teach. But I am sure that you know what you are doing, best of luck.
  17. I am just kidding, I dont think that really.
  18. No, thats the traditional policy from Japan and the way it was done by the systems creator O Sensei Ueshiba.
  19. Whats Greenoch? Interesting take on druids, sort of like an English Tradtional MA. If it works it works. I am not really pro creating styles unless you are very good at lots of styles and have suffiient knoweldge of techniques to make a discion on what does and does not work. However, you seem to have a good set of techniques there, although limited, but thats what you intention anyway. I would try and beef up your knowledge a little more, perhaps take some Self Defence classes, as well as some of the more Traditional MA. Just so you get the feel as whats the best for your style. Best of luck.
  20. You see KickChick its like this, all of us (Man and Woman) start in the womb, and all of us begin life as women. However at the certain time during the gestation period a certain hormone is created to make us male. Thats what I like to call evolution. Us, Male kind, are just more "evolved" than women kind. So it would not be fair to pit us against eachother, because the result is already a certainity. MAN, always has and will rule the earth. Because we are just more evolved. But ladies its nothing to be upset about, and we males are gracious winners.
  21. Most women wear Hakama from the beginning. Men dont however.
  22. ilansru, I just got a book this morning on Arnis. Do you know of any good websites on the filipino arts, especially techniques? Welcome the the forums.
