  1. I am not really sure what your Sensei is refering to there Laurie. Although I would say that it has 2 destinct sides. Standing (Tachi Waza?) and Ne Waza. My Aikido Sensei once told me (He is a 3rd Dan in Judo in like the 1950-60's). That Judo throws work to the sides. What I mean by that is that the angle of the throw is such that you fall shoulder ways. If you get my meaning, unlike Aikido which encourages your attacker to fall forward and backward. Just a side note, I was looking at this site (found it on mcdojo.us) http://www.kungfuschool.com/Videogallery.htm It all looked rather impressive until I saw something called "White Lotus Katana". Now I dunno about you, but I am sure that Katana sounds a little out of place when refering to a Kung Fu site.
  2. I cant think of any reason why Aikido is not number 1 on the list. What is Juko-Kai? Smells of bullshido to me.
  3. OH YES! We have got the best team! THE other side better not show up............. MWHAHAHAHAHAHA! Big Game, are you on MSN?
  4. I dont see how this makes any sence: "kindness, charity, differnce between self defense and bullying) that stemmed from the Bible" So your saying that kindness and charity are purely Christain trats? Have you ever heard of the Crusades?! Martial Arts were around quite some time BEFORE Jesus was ever in the picture......... for example Shaolin. BUDDISM! Which also promotes the same sort of ideas. Perhaps I just got the wrong end of the stick. But anyone that mentions Christians and "kindness", better go to Northern Ireland, Palistine, India, China, Japan, N.America and see what done in the name of Christ. Yours with respect. Chris.
  5. Yea I am a white belt (SHHHHHH dont tell anyone) As Venezolano said, Ne waza, is basically ground work. IMHO, a sign of a good Judo dojo, is lots of ground work. The Full on aspect, (one that I miss alittle in Aikido) does really benefit your perspective on how MA really work. If I had the choice of taking a Mae geri (front kick) to the gut, OR a O Goshi (Major Hip throw), I would take the kick, the thought of falling OVER somones hip, only to then land on the small of my back on the pavement.......... NOT nice. As for questions, ask away. I am sure that we will work though similar stuff like O Goshi, Kesa Katame (Scarf hold), O unchi Garuma (Major inner reap), Shime waza (CHOKES, MY FAV!) and the like. One thing to watch out for, and thats Mat burns, esepcially in Ne Waza, I get them on the front of my feet. Because your always rolling about on the floor and trying to stay upright (no sexual pun intended). Just a little story to end my post...... I was in Judo yesterday and Ne Wazaering (new verb ) with my Sensei. And as I was in a particular bad situation i.e the mount and a rather painful looking choke just about to come on. I accidentally (it really was an accient) rammed my finger up my Sensei's nose, causing his nose to start bleeding. So I guess I got away lightly. AND people say Aikido does not work! PAH!
  6. Now if I were an X-man, I could break all the boards you could throw at me. LIKE MAGNETO! Although he controls metal, not wood! DAMN! My evil plot foiled! MWHAHAHAHHAHAHA!
  7. Dont worry, you get used to it. Just wait until the ne-waza. Great fun!
  8. ME! BAIS! NEVER! MWHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
  9. MORE AIKDIO PEOPLE!!!!!!!!!!! YAY YAY YAY! Oh and welcome.
  10. The only thing I have ever broken was my own leg when running in the sea in Devon. DAMN SURFERS, oh I would love to get that guy on the mat! As for breaking boards, I usually cut them with the power of my mind. On a serious note, congrats Mike!
  11. Oh thats gotta be Karate-do KYohan. Gichin Funakoshi's book, lots of everything... from Spiritual to SD. Although its a little pricey its worth it. Ofcourse anything with Aikido in it is usually good.
  12. "The focus on multiple attackers, weapons, proper body alignment, and blending with attacks, however ... very good." Another good synopsis of Aikido.
  13. "It seems that aikido is more about "combat theory" that eventually focuses towards application." EXACTLY! Look forward to more posts Drunken_Apprentice.
  14. Hmm......... well, I think WC and Aikido work best at the trapping/standing grappling end of the spectrum. Althouth a good Irimi Nage could out range most good kickers and you gotta love joint manipulation on the ground. But thats because I do Aikido and I am baised I think like Kirves said you are basically going to compliment superoir Aikido techniques with powerful striking. Personally, I think the best mix with Aikido is Judo. Mainly because of the conditioning and most Judo dojo's will throw ya about a lot, so you get to know what it feels like to take a few knocks. Ne Waza (ground fighting) is also a great way to get fit AND learn very important ideas about "real" fights. Although a kicking art would be useful, I dont think its SO important as grappling. It all really depends on how much you want to do. But you do train against kicks in Aikido, get someone to attack you with a Jo and thats the best anti kick training there is. IMHO Chris.
  15. kle1n, JKD = Jeet Kun Do Wing Chun has no boxing in it!? It has no WESTERN boxing in it, as it is an Chinese style, but WING CHUN IS A CHINESE BOXING STYLE.
  16. Thanks for that amazing piece of info there JKogas. Truely great. "Believe what you want however." Dont you worry we will. Can I harzard a guess that your 16-17 and have been studying Muay Thai and BJJ for about 3 months?
  17. "Alright, it's obvious that size DOES indeed matter in a fight. All things being equal, the bigger man wins." But things are NEVER equal, its easy to say that size matters. But it is INDEED a collection of different factors. For example if 2 guys are the same "size", then superior techniques, balance, power, speed and the willingness to succeed are going to play a huge role. Its not a matter of size, so much as it is how the person uses their physical abilities. A short person and with less weight (eg O Sensei Ueshiba, Kano, Sun Lu Tang even Helio Gracie) used what they had to defeat much larger attackers. Although, size does have its benefits, when you do have EQUALLY amazing fighters. This was indeed the case in the great Helio Vs Kimura fight. Although I do believe that Kimura was generally better, his size did help in defeating Helio. Just IMHO ofcourse.
  18. VOTED OFF THE FORUM! Thats a little harsh.
  19. Oh THATS what it was. I could'nt tell.
  20. Well.................. it was different. And that kick, now being an Aikido/judoka I know very little about kicks, but WTF is that!
  21. Ofcourse you want to study Aikido......... who would'nt.
  22. You cant get much better than a good truncheon. But a "equaliser" against such a druged up attacker, would be preferable.
