  1. Looking at the DC Character Batman, on Wikipedia: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Batman Obviously mastering 127 styles is a little bit over the top and to be honest quite unnecessary! Just a way for comic writers to make there characters super impressive, for those of us that train in martial arts understand that this high un-realistic and maybe even more of a hindrance... interesting point about utilizing his photographic memory to master all of these arts, but I don't see how that would work? obvious I know that this is all fiction but it's interesting to think about and discuss how this could work... have you heard about anyone with a photographic memory using it to excel in Martial arts? Just think this could create an interesting discussion about the borders between realism and fantasy...
  2. Big congrats to all the winners! and to everyone for making this forum what it is today
  3. I had this problem a lot when I was younger, I did have friends that joined, but none of them seemed to last very long... as mentioned above, I did also become friends with people I have trained with. Now that I am older and run my own class its harder to become friends with the students and maintain the instructor-student relationship, don't get me wrong I'm friendly with them and we do have a type of friendship, but I will always be their instructor. Only exception is my first student, he became one of my best friends and is now the second instructor in my club.
  4. I was a little surprised when I saw this news. Seemed like a possible marketing stunt? After Trump said: They are bound to generate some kind of interest in the art. Some of it being positive interest but could there be quite a bit of negative interest? People that would have been looking to start TKD but don't after seeing this? Overall do you think this will generate more positive interest after being endorsed by Trump? Regarding Honorary Dan Grades, we have never used them and do really see the need to use them either, never came across a situation where we would introduce this... As mentioned before, it's up to the individual governing body, but I don't believe they should make them a Dan grade, fair enough have a separate 'Honorary black belt' status but what is the need of giving them a specific Dan grade? I feel that lessens the value for others of that grade...
  5. If you instructor has asked you to do this then it is because they believe you can do it, have faith in your instructor's judgement and trust that means you are capable of running the class is it a children's class? adult's class or mixed? if it's children, confidence is key, or at least act confident, children can smell fear!! and their focus wont last as long as adults so try not to stick on one drill for too long. As Sensei8 mentioned, your Instructor will most likely have something in mind that he wants you to do, if you do have complete freedom then just stick to the low grade syllabus stuff, but if it is your first time it would be very unlikely that you will have complete freedom. Good luck and let us know how it goes!
  6. Welcome to the forum! Great to hear you have started your karate journey, I hope you continue to enjoy it. Regarding the fist, follow what Sensei8 said and you won’t go far wrong I used to lay all my fingers down so they are pointing to the wrist (like making a fist without tucking the fingers right in) and then with the palm of the other hand pressing against the knuckles, doesn’t have to be too much pressure just enough to feel resistant. I also used to do press ups on my fists, but I don’t recommend doing that straight away, I find that helps strengthen the wrists as well, and helps you prepare for making contact with your fist. I do recommend being shown how to do press up on fists properly to ensure you don’t injure yourself though
  7. Congrats on getting this post to 500 pages!! I must say it is inspiring to see all your training logs and motivates me to work harder to get into a regular routine myself. I have recently managed to find the time twice a week (Tuesdays and Wednesdays) to get into the Gym after work for an hour before having to pick up my daughter from Nursery. Although I'm not really doing a lot of gym work, just a few weights and then the rest is martial art training. Yesterdays session: -Warm up -Lat pull downs 50kg x 10 Chest press 50kg x 10 Tricep dips x 5 -free style bag work before working on particular kicks (round kick and turn back kick) -Squat side kicks -Karate Kata - Tekki Sandan and Ji'in -Lat pull downs 50kg x 10 Chest press 50kg x 10 Tricep dips x 5 -More freestyle bag work. -Kobudo bo staff basics -Kobudo kata - Bo kihon ichi, Kobou Nunchaku
  8. I am a huge Marve fun and a huge martial arts fun! So this film was a big hit with me! Watched it last night and loved it!
  9. Hello Karate Ken! Welcome to the Forum!!
  10. I agree with those previous, who is to say what is complete? I see it more as a personal view: When I think of a complete karate I see it more from the eyes of the practitioner. If the practitioner is looking for a style that does X, Y and Z and they find a style that does X, Y and Z then they have found a style that is complete for them. If they were in a style that only done X and Y and not Z then they are not in a style that is complete for their needs...
  11. Definitely a funny story, saw it coming but still enjoyed reading it. Trying to think of any stories myself but struggling! Only thing I can think of recently was after doing seiza in class I told the students to sit comfortably, my assistant does this thing where he jumps up from seiza position and lands on his bum in a seated position... but this time he misjudged it, rotated a bit too much when his bum hit the floor it let out a loud squeaky fart! you kinda had to be there but it caused a lot of laughter and he looked a little embarrassed! Hard to express how funny it was with the timing, like I said kinda needed to be there.
  12. Welcome to the Forum! Please don't feed any of the animals...

  14. Without Karate depression probably would have effected me a lot worse and would possibly have a lot of angry issues too. I very much doubt I would be particularly social either. To start with I done Karate from the age of 5, so it didn't really mean a lot to me then, after some childhood family issues I appreciated karate for what it could do for me mentally, and karate became a family, support group and a sense of achievement during some very important years as a teenager. It became an outlet for when I was feeling frustrated or low and I can't imagine what life would be like without karate...
  15. Sometimes our reasons for training change, especially if you start karate at a young age. when looking at higher grades, it can be quite daunting to think you might have to do what they are doing one day, but when you start working through the grades, you get a little bit closer every time and suddenly it doesn't seem like a massive jump. with passion and determination you will be surprised just how much you can achieve!
