Many MA and speaciall MMA , tends to look for a balanced guard, protecting the face , but avoiding the holes in the torax section and legs (for takedowns in some arts , ie). But is it necessary in a street fight ? I think that the average joe will try to maul your face with punches ....the chances you have to face Sagat or tito ortiz in a street confrontation are low. The fact of having a high guard , doesnt stop you to take him down and give you a strong protection to your head , plus adding speed and reaction to the hands....and in the case that the guy try to take you down ( we are talking ' bout a brawler) you may sprawl with ease.} Of course that ...there is the change that you might face a skilled wrestler....but that aint happen every day. Its a risk , I know. Am I talking crap ? maybe its too late

Oh... I knew gogoplata from the rubber guard , but I didnt know that this technique has the same name.... Now that I think it quietly....is the same thing but from the top Anyway we dont call it gogoplata , but I knew that BJJ call it that way. THat is the problem when multiple close grappling arts have the same technique and different names for it..... I had several missunderstandings with judokas or other submision wrestling branches

1) bushido was right. 2)Its awesome to learn grappling . You will surprise about that an average guy with 1 year of practice can handle you on the mat easily ,no matter how good are you in stand up combat. Its another world. I am an ´´assertive´´ guy , not cocky but with a ´´normal´´ ego of one who engaged for several years in MA and weight training. I was very angry first, because some skinny lil´guy submited me with calm and ease. I tought : ´´ oh dude , this 150 lbs guy could have taken my life with that chocke. I can bench press two guys like him ,and its useless.´´ . Grappling changed my mind, and I learnt to dont have such prejudices ´bout how an opponent looks. It taught me to respect people and a more important thing not UNDERESTIMATE others. And I know now...that some people is better doing something and worse in other thing. I am a natural decent puncher and kicker , but I am not a natural grappler. I know a 18 yo guy who absorbs techiques like a spounge and won a lot of tourneys with 6 months of practices...and I couldnt remember moves with that skill...... 3) I just have 1/2 year of experience on this , but I used the art outside the mat 2 times . - I took an agressive guy down and then made a frontal choke/crank from mounted. -I used a rear chocke ( mata leao) on a guy who was insulting with his friends in a party for 2 hours. They were looking for fights. I didnt want to punch or kick him....I just wanted him to stop . And the guy fell unconscius for a while..then he stood up.

judo
Rainbow_Warrior replied to french fri25's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
Depends on what do you understand as JKD..Bruce said ´´ be like water´´..... He may haven´t been the best grappler , but he took wrestling clases . JKD teaches to learn the most you can , and grappling is a part of JKD becasuse it doesnt have limits. JKD is what you want to JKD to be , its formless. -
Most Common Types of Attacksers
Rainbow_Warrior replied to Aces Red's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Well.. I think that most common tipe of attackers are those who ask you for money in ´´good´´ manners ( Ie: hey buddy , dont u have buck for the bus ?...And when you say NO , they start to complain , and to escalate in higher levels of verbal agression, reaching a point when physical violence is impossible to avoid. -
I think that is good work with and w/o gi, but I m not used to the gi.... In fact when I did TMA like Kung fu , we used an uniform that consisted in some wide light pants , and a T shirt...or maybe traditional chinese jacket..... I dont know how to grip the opponent´s gi , but It would be good to learn.

full contact JJJ
Rainbow_Warrior replied to Rainbow_Warrior's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
Were this kind of JJJ full contact born after the MMA revolution in the 90´s ? Or are they pretty old ? I say that because many TMA modified some things after looking at the new wave of mma. Is weird that we havent seen traditional jujutsu in the early UFC, they have good elements. I mean....remove the gi in those fights and you could easiliy label it as MMA. Maybe they are not the best strikers/kickers , but they could be very good with some cross training. I know that JJJ is a wide art and fights in the 3 ranges , but I didnt know that the tourneys offers this kind of raw action ( I mean....no stopping 4 points , etc). Does anyone knows the rules of this JJJ competition ? -

What Martial Arts Have You Studied
Rainbow_Warrior replied to Takusankage Soke's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Im just 21.. -TKD as child ( 4 years old) for less than year. -Shaolin gong fu-wing tsun-mantis-choy li fat (was a wide spectrum KF school) 7 years. -western boxing 3 years -wrestling at jr. year. -kick boxing several months. -MMA/thai/luta libre : since Feb from this year. -
Im going to see my parents in december...they are close to houston now , but they move to LA soon. I want to know if some one here knows any friendly grappling/MMA gym in downtown LA . I will stay in the states about 2 months...so I may train a lil bit there or at least watch how do they train there. I know that is after 4 months , but I wanna know where to look at.
-
I will work (and actually do) them in combinations. Of course , it is a long way to the top ( if you wanna rock and ROLL). I just wanna watch some some clear pics and/or vids with new techinques. My plan is not to perform them right now , but just take a look to new alternatives. Sometimes....I know several techiques , but I forget them when I am fighting...and when the fight is over I say : d´oh...I could have done X thing .... So..what about that ezquiel and baseball chocke ?
-
Hey..... I dont handle tons of submisions from here.... Some advanced mates taught me a lot of submisions to neck or head from mounted. I just remember one arm triangle , a cervical with my elbows in the chest and my hands in the back of guy´s neck. Also a frontal mata leao..... I dont wanna ask those guys 20 times about the same.... Do you have any suggestion ? Does anyone know some website with submissions from the mount ?( excluding arm bars , kimura, americana , etc)
-
Tnx bushido...that is right... I try to leave my ego at the door...but sometimes mr ego runs to my arms again when I get chocked . Anyway.. I am trying more techniques... and got tapped sometimes and also , I can get the guy submited more often. I worked hard on positions with my mates. I am getting good to achieve a mounted position even with the oponent´s defending knee raised. Mounted is a good position to handle energic guys.. I just remain with my back at 90 º and go down a lil bit , to distract them looking for a kimura or some cervical until they are tired... A tired guy is an easy pray, more if he has not a good techique.I feel that in my own flesh. When I am exhauseted ( after sparring with 5 guys , ie)...I loose al my stength and will..
-
Yes.... I am starting to try technique , even when I get tapped... I dont care about ´´losing´´ the sparring , I preffer to learn . But some guys think that we are in a dead match , and dont try new things...They go like crazy with the moves that they handle....It is ok for a real fight or for tourney maybe , but we are learning here !. Btw....I maul them when we practice thai box or just hands. Standed...I can go relaxed with success.... I hope that I could do the same in the floor in some time....
-
Hmm , I dont think so. There are mma moves that are not easy at all. try to do a fliying arm bard with a jump from standing. Many of the moves you see are just not fancy...that is... And about MMA is only for big muscle guys.... I have a pal who trains in MMA and he is just 165 lbs , and HE SUBMITED a 220 lbs mate who work as a BOUNCER . I saw it with my own eyes.
-
Ps1 : I practice without gi , cuz I do luta livre...its very much like bjj , but we dont encourage taking the rival to the guard from stand up ( ie : we are fighting in a tourney , and I take u to the guard from standing position , that is a point for the rival -is like him doing a takedown-. This martial art was made for valetudo in brasil or MMA, so even when punches are not allowed , the guard is seen as a dangerous position where you can be punched. Like bjj , luta livre came from judo ,and has a lot of freestyle wrestring and submision wrestring moves. I think that gi work is good too , it permits to lock the other guy with the clothe , what I cant in no gi. But , my school is 100 % oriented toward mma and luta livre , we will never use gi ( BTW I would like to give it a try ) Someone : yes I know that you mean . I try to emulate my older mates , but if I dont have the technique , I cant de so well relaxed. I can keep the guys in closed guard , that works very well cuz I squeeze them very hard ( and sometimes I tapped them using my arms to add power to my legs), I have a good pain resistance too , so I can hang long timeon when they push with the elbows to pass the guard. But I am not a good sweeper....I need more speed. I am a VERY SLOW guy. I do not have explosion , I never had it.
-
I grapple with all my mates. We do a rotation clockwise , so we can face diferent tipes of sizes and skills... I roll with skilled and unskilled... The problem of course ...is with the newbies like me ( or newer). I keep them in a closed guard... I do that...And sometimes I can sweep them.... They slow down when tired....But some of them have an excelent air in their lungs
