This year my wife and I bought a house, and so for the first time we will actually be hositng the Christmas get togethers. In the past, we used to eat a Turkey dinner at my parents place around noon, and then another at her parents place around 4 pm. It was a lot of turkey to take in but it was always a blast. This year we will be cooking, and having my wife's parents, and her sister over along with my parents, and 3 of my siblings. It will be quite the dinner. I have no idea what we were thinking getting into this. Heh. As for the gifts, I plan on getting my wife an mp3 player, a housecoat and a few other smaller gifts. And my 9 year old son is huge into Pirates of the Carribean so he's getting a few play sets and figures for that movie, along with some Star Wars figures to go along with his previous obsession. He got a Star Wars Lego Playstation game as well. Getting excited now.

Wow, you guys get a lot of posts, I dont think I'll ever get that high, heh.

I use it quite a bit and have never had a problem with it. I think if you stick to reputable dealers, don't buy from someone with a zero rating.

How did you find your MA school?
A_Train replied to Patrick's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I had known about it since I was in highschool when it opened. When I was finally looking into attending an MA school, it was a convient location and had built up a good reputation as a school. Nothing exciting really. -
I think its got a very interesting looking controller. The way you can use it to swing a weapon, shoot a gun, or play a sports seems quite innovative. I'm not sure how well it will translot over though. Some people may like to play a game without swinging their arms around. Takes some of teh relazing out of it.

Having a beef with testing fees
A_Train replied to bushido_man96's topic in Share Your Testing, Grading, or Promotion
Sounds pretty hefty to me, btu I have no comparision. I don't know what it costs in my club, as I am no where near that level. -
Are demonstrations like these effective?
A_Train replied to topkicknow's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I was thinking that this may have been a demonstration of choreographing ability instead of a MA demo. If that were the case, then no harm done. It was kinda funny witht eh victory dance and all. I doubt that is the case though, based on the people in the background. I also couldnt watch the whole 3 minutes. -
I've got 2 dogs, both sheppard/border collie mixes names Jersey and Chowder (its my favorite soup too, read the thread!) I also have 2 ferrets, Thaddeus and Lance. My son has a hamster, Shaak Ti.

From what I've read the only advantage to a free standing bag is if you don't have a place to hang a regualr heavy bag. Since I have the room and ability to hang a bag, I don't think I'll pick up a free standing bag (Though I think a BOB XL would be super cool). I will instead likey pick up a higher quality (perhaps Wavemaster) heavybag.
-
Yes, I intend to eventaully get a better, high quality bag, I just don't feel I ot enough use out of this one, and with Xmas coming up I feel its not the right time to be shelling out such money on myself. So you feel that Wavemaster has the best hanging bags?

A quick question about Heavybags. I currently own a 70 lb Centuy brand heavybag. This is obviously not the best bag as it is canvas and therfore you cannot strike it barehanded. But on top of that, within 2 or 3 monhts of having hung it in my basement, the sand settled greatly and no the bottom quarter of the bag is rock hard, while the top is far too soft. Does anyone have a solution for this, or is it comment with all heavybags? I'd heard there are some that are entirely made out of rags, and that they dont settle like the ones composed of sand. Thanks for any help or advice on better bags.

Li vs Lee
A_Train replied to BenefitMC's topic in Martial Arts Gaming, Movies, TV, and Entertainment
I'm a huge fan of Statham as well, but I think that lay smore into his 'coolness' as a character over his Martial Arts skills. I find a lot of his fights just get wayy to cartoony, like in Transporter 2 where he fights several guys by kicking a fire hose at them. It was just silly. -
Any clam chowder that comes out of a can is a poor example of what chowder should be. I much prefer seafood chowder anyways, as it can include much more than just clams. I love the chowders that have less vegetables and more fish. Lobster, shrimp, scallops, MMMMM. i love it. Just not from acan. It has to be homemade or from a good restaurant. As for favorite soup? Italian wedding (which is is barely, spinach and meatball)

I pay $38 a month, and that allows me to go to as many classes a week as I desire. Its slightly discounted because they give a discount for more than one family member attending, and I go with my son. This is Canadian currency, in Canada of course.

I love to drink! lol. Never before a class of course (or before much of anything for that matter). I'll have a beer or two every few nights. And then the occassional social gathering or party where I consume more...

I started in highschool I never got really good, but I had fun with it. Lately I've been playing bass in a 'band'. Its just for fun.

Why has Rogan challenged Snipes? Was there any sort of feud or words exchanged? It just seems weird to through out a challenge to someone like Snipes, who has MA experience, but as far as I know, no real desire to compete.

My first MA related injury!
A_Train replied to bushido_man96's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
That sucks man. Take yoru time and you'll have a full recover, though I know it will be frustrating. -
So does anone use (and like) those BOB (XL) standing bags? I was thinking of getting one for kicking, but I've read that some people don't think they are worth the cost. I already have a Century Brand 70 lb heavybag from the ceiling which I use quite often. But the bag is not of the best quality (it is canvas) and it has gotten very hard in the bottom, and soft in the top due to settling. The bag is less than a year old, I didnt think it should settle this fast. I aslo find the when performing side kicks on a ceiling heavybag it begins to sway too much and I have to stop it. I was thinking that a standing bag like BOB would be better for this type of thing, as well as proper targetting and simulating a sparring target. I read some old posts in this forum but they seemed to focus more on the wavemasters bag instead of the Century BOBs. Any thoughts are welcome.

Have fun. I started in MA not long ago, and can't get enough. I love it.

Congrats, and well done! -
Well, he let me re-start it after I had screwed up. Other than that I did rather well, I think.

I got my yellow stripe tonight. i was really nervous with no good reason, I just hate performing in front of people. I did mess up Saju Makgi from the left side. I thought I was doing it right, but it turns out I was jsut doing it from teh right side again. Stupid brain failed me! Other than that I did ok, I think i could have done better, based on how well I do my forms alone. Oh well, only room to improve next time. I was still happy!

Help! Sticky situation .. no training
A_Train replied to karatekid1975's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I'll give the instructor the benefit of the doubt here. I mean, did you come straight out and ask if you could attend classes for free/cheaper, or did you just present your situation, telling him you wouldnt be able to attend classes until you found another job, hoping he would take the hint and offer the free month or so. Either way, I hope you find employment sooner than later, as I know the stress and struggles that are involved with it. -
I've only ever used the skipping rope as a warm up to hittin ghte heavy bag. I usually use it for 2 or 3 minutes. I much prefer to do it for a time frame, and HATE it when people say jump 200 times, because counting during skipping drives me crazy.
