  1. my TKD school used to be 1hr long with about 25mins of warm ups. i thought that was over the top. plus it wasnt just a regular warm up it was very full on, so by the time TKD started you were ready to stop. sounds to me like you should be looking at other schools. either that, or bring it up with the instructor that you are dissatisfied with the situation.
  2. with the side kick, you need to pivot the grounded foot so its pointing opposite to the direction of the kick, and really thrust the hips in to it as well. this should be done just before impact.
  3. you can do all of those things with a jab... how do you follow thru a jab? a backfist can be used as both a quick snap, or a driving power technique, a jab, by definition is just a jab. (duh) http://www.google.com.au/search?sourceid=navclient&ie=UTF-8&rls=SUNA,SUNA:2006-10,SUNA:en&q=define%3A+jab
  4. true, but still, it isnt possible to get more power half way through it than at the end. same really goes for striking. there are some exceptions tho, an upset punch (a close in punch where the fist is facing up at the end rather than down) is probable more powerful where it finishes, which is with the arm bent not extended, but this is because there is no rotation on the fist. it still wouldnt be as powerful as a fully extended regular punch.
  5. hey, good luck with the grading what is the sylabus like?
  6. so if you see two people fighting, rattle some biscuits in a tin, the fight will break and they will run up to you and be really friendly seriously tho, i like every point brought up in those posts. all very true. ever watch a cat stalk its prey, its fantastic to watch. there is a reason they can catch birds and people cant.
  7. i think billing companies might want a year long contract per student for the billing, plus they are obviously going to charge for it so either your rates go up or you wear the cost. the main issue for me would be the contract. getting people to sign a year long contract for something like this is going to turn people away. people arent going to know after 1 or 2 free classes if its want they want enuf to sign a 12 month training contract. plus if they read this forum they will get the notion that 12 month contract = McDojo
  8. that happy birthday thing is so annoying. it will get old very quickly.
  9. if anything, you will lose weight doing MA. over the last year i have been on and off with my MA, and i have found my weight to go up and done too.
  10. i wouldnt have thought that wearing the weights thru your normal day would do all that much. i guess it depends what you do. if you sit at a desk on the computer then you really arent lifting the weights. i would really only wear them during excersise.
  11. nah, i didnt quite have that much momentum.
  12. funniest thing to happen to my at class was when i was practicing my flying side kick over 4 kids. i jumped to late and my foot clipped the side of the first kid and i ended up flying head first in to the people holding the board.
  13. any movie with kylie minogue in it cant really be classed as a movie, but having her do martial arts was unacceptable. i have repressed this movie from my memory.
  14. Shotokan is a lot like ITF TKD. in fact, i can give you similarities for pretty much each of the heian katas. i dont think there is any issue with being overweight. im not exactly a bean pole and i do ok.
  15. there is no "ultimate style" just an "ultimate style for you"
  16. a student can progress much faster if taking private lessons. when in a class, you are basically working at the slowest students pace, when it is 1 on 1 you get your pace.
  17. you dont really aim at a target at an angle, you aim for an angled target. ie, no ppoint doing a roundhouse to the chest, it will skim off, but to the kidneys, side of the knee or even side of the face is the best target for this kick. if your opponent is facing at an angle, then you could kick him in the chest but the other targets are more what it is designed for.
  18. hehe, sounds like the "dim mak"
  19. or, to summarise, even a 65 yo man could kick my butt.
  20. damn that sucks. you'll be ok tho and as sempai says, train hard, you will get hurt. but it prepares you cos in a real fight, you will get hurt.
  21. by the first hit in do you mean lands the first strike or throws the first strike see this thread: http://www.karateforums.com/viewforum.php?f=25
  22. speaking of which, american ninja was on tv here last night. what a terrible movie. (i taped it anyway, it was followed by delta force)
  23. when you flick someone with a towel, what hurts mre, hitting them right on the tip, or when it is fully extended? the closer you get the towel to the tip the more it hurts the person. the most power would be at full extension, for the reasons above, but this is also the point that you tense up, thus there would be less recoil thru your arm/leg. (this is out of my head, no science involved, it could be wrong but seems common sense to me)
  24. spinning heel kick is my fav breaking technique. did a couple of demos with a jumping side kick over 3 or 4 kids bending down which always pleases the crowd.
