N.B.L isn't the best circuit out there. They have a lot of good competitors but if you want to see the best of the best then NASKA is the way to go. It is a much bigger organization and for open torn. they have the best competitors. Many competitors from Naska go on to movies etc. So if you're looking for the best go there and 2nd best would be KRANE ratings. Pete

Belts are just a scam !!!!!
Withers M.A.A. replied to Mo_Tseu's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I've always paid $30 per test. That includes the test itself, the belt, and the certificate. I don't think its a scam. It gives p eople short term goals instead of just having one promotion in 4-6 years. Pete -
axe kick
Withers M.A.A. replied to Lau gar's topic in MMA, Muay Thai, Kickboxing, Boxing, and Competitive Fighting
I'm referring to a backfist that is coming in a downward motion.......... It is coming from the same direction as the ax kick. THe strike is coming from the ceiling towards the ground. -
I don't back everything the government does by any means. I live in Massachussets and our rights are taken away little by little. Stupid things like not being able to buy Nunchaku cause they are illegal or being able to buy certain handguns or having stupid smog tests done on cars. I do sometimes feel the government isn't looking out for our best interests and only their own personal growth but I do love this country and still feel it is the greatest on the planet.

Kicking paddles are widely used in Tae Kwon Do. It is a hand held pad and comes in either a double surface or single. Double paddles are usually better. I'll upload a pic of one so you can reference. I've found that Pine Tree paddles work the best for me. http://martialartssupermarket.com/images/products/2816_oc.art

Here is the preliminary ideas for my logo. I'm thinking something on the lines of the one at the bottom right corner. let me know which one you like and any ideas on changing it will be great. These are NOT the final ideas just preliminary. The scissor kick is from an actual pic of me doing that kick so that is symbolic to me. The triangle represents- Mind, Body, and Spirit as one. The lines represent the 5 rules and 5 animals of the school. (effort, etiquite, sincerity, selfcontrol.- Leopard, Tiger, Snake, Crane, Dragon) I don't think I like the lines in the triangle of the logo. I also t hink I'm going to change the guy kicking to silver. So any advice good or bad is greatly appreciated. Petehttp://www.netsnapshot.com/users/7139/images/POZVqMCoBQIAADVeOlM_7139_7.jpg

Well the best way to gain power is to train harder. Practice kicking objects such as bags, paddles, etc. Kicking paddles are one of the best training tools to develop speed, power, and acuracy. Weight training will help you with your strenght but not necessarily make your strikes harder. Power = speed x force.

Help me with naming my Martial Arts school
Withers M.A.A. replied to Withers M.A.A.'s topic in Instructors and School Owners
I don't think I'll name it after the town I open in because I eventually plan on possibly opening a 2nd school. With that I want to use the same name. I'm highly leaning towards Withers Martial Arts Academy still. Pete -
I'm sorry but the United States is by far the greatest and most powerful country on the planet. I back Bush in what he is doing and has done and as for 9/11 all Americans were brought closer because of that day so that shows we are even that much stronger. If you don't love this country like the rest of us do then leave, cause if that is how you feel we don't want you. No offense but this is how I feel. Pete AMERICA RULES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Preparing for Tournament
Withers M.A.A. replied to KickChick's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
When competing in forms you need to psyche yourself up from the second you wake in the morning. When you enter that ring make it known that you own it. Remember you are doing a performance so you need to make it as realistic as possible. Being timid or shy or unsure of yourself will guarantee a loss. If you are confident and show that you own the ring your chances of winning will be that much better. Pete -
axe kick
Withers M.A.A. replied to Lau gar's topic in MMA, Muay Thai, Kickboxing, Boxing, and Competitive Fighting
If you use your body when you are throwing the ax kick properly when the kick is near complete your body weight should be moving forward so a backfist is PERFECT... Keep in mind the backfist will be coming in a downward position. i've used this tech. a million times and I also teach it to the people I train. They in turn use it to so I know for a fact that it works great. Pete -
Well I'll be opening my dojo in about 2-3 months and I'm trying to come up with a name. Just a basic rundown of what I teach. My style consists of Kenpo Karate, Tae Kwon Do, Sport Karate, and a mixture of a few other arts like boxing, and Muay Thai. My emphasis will be on kicking and aerial kicking etc. I was planning on naming my school Withers Martial Arts Academy as oppossed to Withers Karate Academy for the simple fact that I won't only be teaching "karate" Do you agree with this? I will also be uploading a pic of my logo in progress for ideas. I'll post that in the am. Pete

Does anyone have any experience with these swords. I was looking into a bugei sword but came accross these. How is the quality on them? Would you recommend buying one or just spend the extra money on the Bugei? I want a hand forged blade made the way they were in Feudal Japan. Anyone know of any other manufactures of these types of swords? Pete

When I was lifting and trying to gain weight I was taking protein supplements along with Creatine. When I was taking the Creatine I was gaining an average of 5 lbs. of muscle per month. It def. made me feel stronger and made gaining weight much easier. The side effect was that I lost a lot of flexiblity while I was on it. It does make you hold water more which makes getting ripped a little more difficult. I've also read about people dehydrating while on it. For weight lifting and trying to gain weight I would recommend it but for just Martial Arts training I would just stick with a protein shake. Pete

axe kick
Withers M.A.A. replied to Lau gar's topic in MMA, Muay Thai, Kickboxing, Boxing, and Competitive Fighting
I would never do an ax kick to the chest. It would be a waste of energy and just aggrivate your opponent. As for the backfist... if you use the same hand as the ax kick it only makes sense. Your motion will be coming forward if the axe kick is done correctly and if you kick with your right leg you follow that up with a downward backfast to finish off your opponents face. Pete -
If you had two people to pound on.....
