  1. I get your all or nothing principle, but something is better than nothing, too. You ought to just try maybe 2 days of BJJ per week. Having the knowledge of the ground fighting would definitely be worth it. Do you do a lot of sparring in BJJ? If so, perhaps you could try to break it up so you drill one day and spar one day, and hopefully not get as beat up?
  2. Carr also visited the Jets. The biggest shoe to drop this offseason will be what Rodgers finally decides to do. I wonder a) how long he'll attempt to hold the Packers ransom, and b) how long the Packers will put up with it.
  3. That's interesting, I hadn't seen that news. Oakland won't have much left after the A's move out!
  4. Hopefully you get to feeling better soon! Those setbacks always suck.
  5. I'm curious as to if the Raiders believe Stidham is the answer. Of course, as per usual, there will be a QB carousel with plenty of options up for grabs in free agency.
  6. We both would've enjoyed that quite a lot. IF, God would allow us to train once again, the Bo would be the main fare. That would be awesome!
  7. 2/15/2023 DT Training: 2 hour session in the morning, 8:00 - 10:00 am. The guy who usually helps me out ran this one, and set up a cuffing session for the jail staff. It went really well. 2/16/2023 Strength Training Squats: 45x5x2, 135x5, 185x3, 245x1, 275x5, 275x5, 275x5. Press: 45x5x2, 75x5, 100x3, 130x1, 142.5x5, 142.5x5, 142.5x5. Snatch Grip Deadlifts: 185x3, 245x2, 280x5, 280x5. A good session today. I'm a little discouraged, though, because it feels like press is starting to tank out already.
  8. That's too bad, scohen. People can often mess up some perfectly good things....
  9. Good point. While it is possible to learn a lot of new techniques during our lifespan, will they be effective. Or will we be even able to keep performing them correctly. Also if our physical ability declines there will come a time when less skilled fighter will simply overpower us with brute strenght. So after a time what we learn might only be beneficial for teaching next generations. This is the ebb and flow of all things in life, really. We pass through a physical prime, our peak, after some time which things begin to taper off and decline (the rate of that decline can be slowed, but not typically reversed). At that point, we have to decide if we retire, or if we have the ability to start passing our knowledge along to the next generation.
  10. Had to bring this one back! The Kansas City Chiefs are Super Bowl LVII Champions! What a game that was! Trailing most of the game, and Philly absolutely controlled the clock. Jalen Hurts had a monster game, and that guy is here to stay; he'll have a long and productive career. But Patrick Mahomes is just the man. It was nerve racking at the end of the game, to be sure...I give Coach Reid props for putting his trust in Butker to come out with the win! Anyway, great game, and another title for the Chiefs!
  11. Ok Disney, you keep making all this stuff, so what's the deal? The Gargoyles cartoon series was had such a rich, deep storyline, I want to know where my GCU is? What's taking so long here? We've still got Keith David around to voice Goliath/Thailog, and the actors from Star Trek: The Next Generation that voiced Xanatos and Demona. Let's get a move on here!
  12. And quality answers like that are the reason we all keep coming back to KF! Great post, Bob, great detail! Now I wish we'd had some bos to train with when you came down!
  13. 2/13/2023 Strength Training Squats: 45x5x2, 135x5, 185x3, 225x1, 275x5, 275x5, 275x5. Press: 45x5x2, 65x5, 95x3, 115x1, 141x5, 141x5, 141x5. Deadlifts: 185x5, 255x3, 325x1, 375x5. I used a different bar for squat today, kept the grip a bit narrower, and chalked my hands a little, and that seemed to keep the bar from sliding into my wrists. I call it a win. Lat set of press was kind of a grind, and the layback is starting up. I had to do my deadlifts today, because I have someone coming to do housework on Wednesday during my normal lifting time. The set was heavy, but it was probably the technically best set overall I've done in a while. TKD Class: 6:30 - 7:30 pm. Black Belt Class. Do-Kang 1 twice, then Do-Kang 2. After that, we spent some time on the first 6 three-steps, and a little time on Ho Sin Sul at the end of the class.
  14. Mine is an interesting challenge. I have Meniere's disease, and Crohn's disease. The Crohn's is pretty well under control now, but the Meniere's is a different story. I have to limit my salt intake to 2 grams per day, and avoid caffeine, nicotine, and alcohol. Nicotine isn't a problem, because I never smoked or chewed tobacco, and I would only have a drink occasionally. Giving up caffeine sucked, as I liked my Dr. Pepper and coffee. Because of the salt limitations, I prepare a lot of my own food at home. I have a salt substitute that I use, and I avoid processed foods at all costs. One slip up will have my world spinning for an entire day, and likely seeing everything that I ate before. I try to do whole foods, ground beef and turkey, steak and chicken, steamed vegetables, and fresh fruit. I still leave some room for some sweets, like ice cream and dark chocolate. Overall, cooking has been good for me, but I still carry a little extra weight.
  15. That's an intriguing concept; how long would one have to train before becoming a candidate for black belt? What are the distinctions between youth and adult curriculum? In the system I'm currently a part of, there really is no difference. All the material trained and tested on is the same.
  16. When one teaches, two learn.
  17. The common themes in these replies – that you continue investigating your art, you tailor it to your own needs, you teach it to others, etc. – are all about your practice and your understanding. It is a personal journey. So in some sense I expect most people who stick with it to have some independence, whether by choice or necessity. (I’m also independent of any organization if you can’t tell) I honestly think this is how it was done mostly, especially in the times when it was more commonplace to have only a few dedicated students. I think more standardization has taken hold for longer with the onset of larger class sizes and with many students coming through the halls.
  18. I don't like MRIs either, Bob. Very discomforting. I'm hoping your test comes back great!
  19. I do full ROM deadlifts; I don't have much use for sumo deadlifts, which is really just a bastardization of the deadlift due to rules issues in powerlifting federations, allowing competitors to reduce the range of motion of the lift, and therefore lift more weight, and therefore win a competition. The wide grip bench press has a similar effect. Then, gym bros picked it up and do it often because it is A) easier, and B) allows them to say they can "deadlift" more than they can actually "deadlift." It's a lot easier to move 400 lbs 6 inches than it is to move it 2 and half feet. Anyway, I digress... 2/10/2023 Strength Training Squats: 45x5x2, 135x5, 185x3, 225x1, 270x5, 270x5, 270x5. Press: 45x5x2, 65x5, 95x3, 115x1, 139.5x5, 139.5x5, 139.5x5. Snatch Grip Deadlifts: 165x3, 245x2, 275x5, 275x5. I narrowed my grip a bit on squat, when I didn't think I'd be able to. Maybe that will take some stress off my elbows as the weight goes up. Pressing is still good, and the shoulders seem to be holding up nicely. Snatch deads went well today, but man did they feel heavy. Rep 5 was a real grinder on both sets. I think I did a good job of keeping the bar on my shins on the way up; I had a nice blood stain coming through my sweats on the inside of my right knee! 40 minutes on the treadmill with my wife.
  20. What do you mean by "curriculum black belt" and "instructor black belt?" It's a good thing this post got brought back to life--I completely missed this question! I actually ended up tweaking this, a bit, but the idea was to have a black belt rank for those who learn all of the adult curriculum that I established as being required, and another black belt rank for those who want to be instructors, which would require them to ALSO know the youth curriculum, as well as the Bugeikan material, so that they were equipped to teach everything that I teach. I ended up just going with one black belt rank, and a Shidoin certificate for those who learn the rest of the material and want to teach. I see what you mean here. What you are suggesting sounds like a separate instructor certification. I've heard it said that in the UK, 100 miles is a long way, but 100 years is a very short period of time; in the US, 100 miles is a short way, but 100 years is a long time.
  21. I trained at an ATA school for a little while, and they did a very similar thing. Starting at first degree, you'd first have to earn a "first degree recommended" rank, followed by a "first degree decided rank". The recommended rank is temporary, while the decided is permanent. Of course, they required you to do a number of midterm tests between ranks as well, each one with its associated test fees. But of course, that's ATA for you. Yep. My first structured MA experiences came through the ATA. I held a 2nd dan and Instructor Certification.
  22. I think this is very awesome. I remember seeing the videos your instructor was doing, and how well put together they were. It seems like he didn't have an issue with ego either, making him very pliable as an instructor, and a student. You had a great experience.
  23. That sounds like a fun time training! Good luck moving forward, and please keep us posted as to how training in both goes.
  24. There's a lot of interesting political history between the ITF and the WTF. General Choi was basically banned from the country for a while, and started spreading his ITF around the world, while the Korean government was spearheading the startup of the WTF through the KTA. Squatting doesn't bother my knees. In fact, it has helped them over the past few years. TKD has been causing me knee pain for quite some time, and my left knee recently has been the one really bothering me. I spend a lot of time in the car for work, and getting in and out, putting that left leg down and basically doing partial one-leg standups and twisting out of the car doesn't help it at all. 2/7/2023 30 minutes on the treadmill with the wife (not on the same treadmill; that would be weird...). 2/8/2023 Strength Training Squats: 45x5x2, 135x5, 185x3, 225x5, 225x5. Press: 45x5x2, 65x5, 95x3, 115x1, 138x5, 138x5, 138x5. Deadlifts: 185x5, 255x3, 325x1, 370x5. Lat Pull-downs: 130x10, 130x10, 130x10. Did a light squat session today, mainly to help warm things up for the deadlift. Recalling my press workout from the previous session, I misloaded my micro plates, so have to go back and fix that. In order to keep things on schedule, I put the weight where it was supposed to be today, had I done the proper weight last session. Last warmup on deadlift seemed awful, so I wasn't anticipating a fun work set. But, it went up. First 2 reps were good, 3 starts to grind, and rep 4 drifted a little. Rep 5 wasn't bad, but wasn't great. TKD Class: 6:30 - 7:30 pm. T-Shirt Class: Started with a real light stretch in The Rack, but not so much to aggravate the adductor tendon. I followed that up with a twelve 30 second rounds on the standing heavy bag; I did a round of hands only in orthodox stance, then a round of hands in southpaw stance, and then a round of kicks; 1 minute rest between 30 second rounds. After that, I went through my black belt forms: Choong Moo, Kwang Gae, Poe Eun, Gae Baek, Se Jong, Yoo Sin, and Choong Jang. Had trouble with balance tonight, and once I started on forms, my left knee flared up on my again. It did NOT want to be in a left leg front stance. I think a knee wrap may be in order. And some more Biofreeze.
  25. Our school also has those "ho" ranks; we call them "recommended" ranks. 1st degree recommended, then 1st degree; same for 2nd and 3rd.
