  1. 3/17/2022 Strength Training Squats: 45x5x2, 155x5, 215x3, 280x1, 320x5, 320x5, 320x5. Press: 45x5x2, 85x5, 125x3, 155x1, 178x1, 178x1, 178x1, 178x1, 178x1, 178x1, 178x1. Stretch: hams, quads, glutes, shoulders. Squats went better today. The sets were tough, but the bar stayed on my back better today. 3/18/2022 Strength Training Bench Press: 45x5x2, 125x5, 185x3, 225x2, 257.5x5, 257.5x5, 257.5x5. Snatch: 95x2, 105x2, 110x2, 115x2, 115x2, 115x2, 115x2, 115x2. Clean & Jerk: 120x1, 130x1, 135x1, 142.5x2, 142.5x2, 142.5x2, 142.5x2, 142.5x2. Stretch: hams, quads, glutes, shoulders. Bench was rough again. First set was like usual, ugly. Second set was ok, but last rep on set three was bad. Got out of the groove, and had to go around the pins to get back on track. I hadn't snatched in a few weeks, and working both Olympic lifts into the same workout was kind of nice.
  2. That sounds like a good approach. Keep us posted if the child does come back to class. If he doesn't, it may be for the best at this point in time.
  3. It sounds like you're doing great! Congrats on passing your ikkyu testing, and good luck moving forward to your shodan testing! Stay focused and keep working hard, and it'll come to you in no time!
  4. 3/14/2022 Strength Training Squats: 45x5x2, 155x5, 215x3, 280x1, 315x5, 315x5, 315x5. Press: 45x5x2, 85x5, 125x3, 155x5, 155x5, 155x5, 155x5, 155x5. Stretch: hams, quads, glutes. The bar seemed to be sliding all over my back during squats. I must have had my grip screwed up, because it kept sliding up or down, and the bar slipped from my hands to my wrists. It's time to change up the press programming. Going to do the first workout of the week at a reduced weight, but as a volume stressor at 5x5 sets across. The second session of the week will be an intensity session, doing 7 heavy singles. I'll monitor to see how it affects the bench press. TKD Class: 6:30 - 7:30 pm. Black Belt Class: Do-Kangs 1-4 (4 at count) and then the first 3 sections of 5, at count. Self-defense work after that. Drilling with eyes closed, and attacker would do a shove from various directions. The point was to get into a stance and prepare to defend. We added various grabs or chokes towards the end of class. 3/15/2022 Strength Training Deadlifts: 135x5, 245x5, 305x2, 345x5. Bench Press: 45x5x2, 125x5, 185x3, 225x1, 255x5, 255x5, 255x5. Stretch: hams, quads, glutes, shoulders. Deadlifts....grindy, but got it. Bench press was hard, and it really affected my right shoulder. I will continue to monitor this.
  5. This is a problem, for sure. First off, don't be put off by his mother's "perception" of how good she thinks her baby is. Be up front with her that his behavior is not acceptable, and that you won't tolerate it. And once you lay that down, DON'T TOLERATE IT. You might suggest to mom that she not stay for class. If he thinks that he is showing off for mom, and she won't reinforce your discipline, then you won't get anywhere. In this case, it might behoove you to ask mom to not stay and watch class. Maybe she goes for it, maybe she doesn't. But when he acts out, sit him out. Right away. Then when he's ready to participate in the activities the other kids are doing, bring him back in. If he acts out again, he sits out again. I know you want to reach this kid, but remember that you have several other paying customers that you aren't having this issue with, and they don't deserve to lose class time to this kid's antics. I know you don't want to give up on this kid, and I don't think you should. Just don't lose sight of the other kids in class for this one that is acting out, and is doing so for some attention. This is the tough part, but in the end, nothing is for everybody, and it may be that your class is not for this student. Keep working, but be firm, and consistent, and do not let this kid continue to disrupt your class.
  6. Thank you for updating us! It sounds like you've got a great attitude and the perfect approach to this new, yet similar, training. Good for you! Enjoy this new step in the journey!
  7. 3/10/2022 Strength Training Squats: 45x5x2, 155x5, 215x3, 280x1, 310x5, 310x5, 310x5. Press: 45x5x2, 85x5, 125x3, 155x1, 176x3, 176x3, 176x3, 176x2, 176x2, 176x2. Stretch: hams, quads, glutes.
  8. Welcome, 9StepHEN. You should consider creating your own introductory thread and telling us a little bit about yourself. Do you practice a Martial Art? Which one? Or are you looking to get started?
  9. I'm lucky here in that the gym owner and school owner are the same people; don't have to worry about giving up the space. We shall see how things go moving forward into the next college semester.
  10. It's sounds to me like you've got a real moral dilemma here. On the one hand, even though you don't agree with the system, you like to teach and it sounds like you offer positivity to these students. On the other hand, you don't agree with the policy and procedures of the organization. Do you keep teaching or not? Are you teaching in your own school, or are you teaching in the main school where the CI that implemented all this is? If you are in your own school, you might be able to get away with promoting your own students, but perhaps only once before getting into trouble. And who knows what kind of legal trouble you could get into, especially if there is breach of some kind of contract. I wouldn't presume to tell you what to do. But it sounds to me like you should seek to find a different school. You could try to present a case to the CI to change his money-making strategy, but I doubt that will happen. Eventually, someone isn't going to be able to afford the fees that is deserving, and someone undeserving will be able to pay the fees and move forward. This won't sit well with you. I say, start looking for alternatives and move on. I'm really sorry to hear this.
  11. Strength Training 3/7/2022 Strength Training Squats: 45x5x2, 155x5, 205x3, 250x1, 305x5, 305x5, 305x5. Press: 45x5x2, 85x5, 125x3, 155x1, 174x3, 174x4, 174x3, 174x3, 174x2. Attacked the squats today. Heavy, but I tried to stay more aggressive under the bar. Tried to go down a little faster than I usually do. For press, I took a wider stance. I'm not sure if that helped push the bar better or not, but I liked how it felt. Also, since moving to day shift, I'm getting better calorie intake, which means better recovery. 3/8/2022 Strength Training Deadlifts: 135x5, 245x3, 305x1, 340x5. Bench Press: 45x5x2, 125x5, 185x3, 225x2, 252.5x5, 252.5x5, 252.5x5. Stretch: hams, glutes. Deadlift felt much better today. Bench press feels like it's starting to top out.
  12. thanks Bushido_man for the reply, are you in a commercial Dojo? why do you not have many adults? covid/shutdown?, area?, (rural versus city), do the gyms in your area have full programs/memberships?.....that is why i asked if anyone had incorporated HIIT type classes/programs into their curriculum, there are a few 9 rounds type gyms in my area that keep large memberships, as well as full scale gyms. just brainstorming ideas here that could boost memberships. a lot of people get into the martial arts just for the exercise, cardio, weight loss, etc... what are some ways we could maybe keep people interested and returning even after the goal of blackbelt is reached. with the wave of planet fitness and workout anytime type establishments popping up everywhere at 20.00 a month it is getting tougher to compete and draw in customers. especially adults. who once they realize that these gyms arent what they seek will then go to gyms like 9 rounds or crossfit for 100 plus per month. how do we become the middleman, so to speak, and get some of this group of people interested. how do we market in a new way yet still retain the core of what we teach. I don't know that I'd call it a commercial dojang. When covid hit and everyone thought it was wise to force business to shut down, we lost a lot of our student body. Quite a few didn't come back. I'm guessing they were on the fence about it anyway, and covid provided a convenient excuse to walk away, and lasted long enough to justify not coming back. We also had a change in CI/school owner, which probably caused some of the drop off, too. Funnily enough, our school is in a 24-hour gym (not a national chain though), and the owner has leased floor space for some aerobic classes of some type. However, they aren't MA affiliated courses (like Tae-Bo for example). I live in a fair-sized city, about 21,000, but in a pretty rural area. We usually get lots of kids signed up, but when they starting getting older, lots of them trail off to school sports. I don't have a problem with this, it just is what it is. We used to have a better adult standing, and hope for it to start coming back. There was a time when our TKD class was one of a few courses available for a PE credit at the local university, but that was dropped about 10 years ago, and we lost a nice inflow of adult students, even if was just for a quarter at a time, and we'd usually have a few that stuck around. I've heard we are getting back into the college credit business, but I don't think the requirement level has changed. So we'll see what happens.
  13. 3/1/2022 Strength Training Deadlifts: 135x5, 225x4, 275x3, 300x1, 335x1. Bench Press: 45x5x2, 120x5, 180x3, 205x2, 247.5x5, 247.5x5, 247.5x5. Stretch: hams, quads, glutes. Deadlift was just a grind. It's slow off the floor, and slow all the way up, on all five reps. I dread it. But when I'm done, it almost feels euphoric. I'm never disappointed that I did it. 3/3/2022 Strength Training Squats: 45x5x2, 155x5, 205x3, 250x1, 300x5, 300x5, 300x5. Press: 45x5x2, 85x5, 120x3, 155x2, 172x3, 172x4, 172x2, 172x1, 172x1, 172x2, 172x1, 172x1. Stretch: hams, quads, glutes. That 300# mark is where squats start to get crazy for me it seems. Reps grind more, I find myself getting forward on my toes at times, etc. Press is reaching it's end point, I think. Reps are going to get few and far between from here. 3/4/2022 Strength Training Bench Press: 45x5x2, 120x5, 180x3, 215x2, 250x5, 250x5, 250x5. Power Clean & Jerk: 105x2, 115x2, 125x1, 140x2, 140x2, 140x2, 140x2, 140x2. Stretch: hams, quads, glutes. First set on bench was ugly, but the others went better, although 3rd set was a grind. It's been a few weeks, so time for a numbers update: Powerlifting Total: 300 squat, 250 bench, 335 deadlift = 885 lbs. Strengthlifting Total: 300 squat, 172 press, 335 deadlift = 807 lbs. Weightlifting Total: 140 Clean & Jerk, 112.5 Snatch = 252.5 lbs. Overall: 1309.5 lbs. Still not great numbers, but they're getting better.
  14. Sounds like great news all around, Bob! Remission! That's awesome! So happy for you!
  15. Is it Chun Sik Kim's school? I have a book written by him and Joe Goss, and I really enjoyed it. From what I read, the style has many Karate kata that have some slight differences, but still very recognizable. Like Bob mentioned, there will likely be more emphasis on kicking, but not necessarily at the expense of hand techniques. I think you'll enjoy training there.
  16. Great explanation, Noah. Tatusjin, this is great question, and I look forward to seeing more answers! I hope Bob chimes in. I believe we played with this a little bit when we got together, didn't we Bob? If I recall, it ended with me on the ground a few times. I'm not sure that we trained it to it's fullest extent, due to my newness to the subject, but I believe we did train it.
  17. 2/25/2022 Strength Training Bench Press: 45x5x2, 120x5, 180x3, 215x1, 247.5x4, 247.5x5, 247.5x5. Power Clean & Jerk: 105x2, 110x2, 120x1, 135x2, 135x2, 135x2, 135x2, 135x2. Missed on the last rep of the first set of bench. Got out of the groove, and sent the bar up into the pins. I'd much rather fail on the last rep of the last set than on the first set, especially since the other two sets were good. Oh well. 2/28/2022 Strength Training Squats: 45x5x2, 155x5, 205x3, 250x1, 295x5, 295x5, 295x5. Press: 45x5x2, 85x5, 125x3, 155x2, 170x4, 170x3, 170x3, 170x3, 170x2. Press is getting heavy! TKD Class: 6:30 - 7:30 pm. Black Belt Class: Did Do-Kangs 1-5, then worked on some Ho Sin Sul, just kind of freelancing things. At the end of class, did Choong Jang once. Had some stretching time before class.
  18. We don't have many adults right now, so we are just running mixed classes 4 times per week, for an hour each. On Monday night after mixed class is Black Belt Class for an hour. Wednesday after the mixed class is a Kicking Class for an hour. We also have Little Lions classes for 30 minutes prior to the mixed classes. These tend to be our largest classes right now.
  19. 2/23/2022 TKD Class: 6:30 - 7:15 pm. T-shirt Class: spent the time going over the first six three-steps, then went over Do-Kang 5. Spent some time stretching. 2/24/2022 Strength Training Squats: 45x5x2, 155x5, 205x3, 250x1, 290x5, 290x5, 290x5. Press: 45x5x2, 80x5, 125x3, 145x1, 168x4, 168x2, 168x3, 168x2, 168x2, 168x2.
  20. Welcome to KF! Looking forward to keeping up with your training progression! It's great that you have decided to come back to the journey!
  21. 2/21/2022 Strength Training Squats: 45x5x2, 155x5, 205x3, 250x1, 285x5, 285x5, 285x5. Press: 45x5x2, 80x5, 125x3, 145x1, 166x4, 166x4, 166x4, 166x3. Deadlifts: 225x4, 295x2, 330x5. 2/22/2022 Strength Training Bench Press: 45x5x2, 120x5, 180x3, 215x1, 245x5, 245x5, 245x5. Power Snatch: 95x2, 105x2, 115x2, 112.5x2, 112.5x2, 112.5x2, 112.5x2. Bench press went well. Last few reps get tough, but otherwise, things are going well. First work set of snatch was not good; ended with a press, which isn't good. Dropped 2.5 lbs back, and it went a little better, but I feel like I'm tapping it out already.
  22. Good suggestions above so far. You want to keep changing things up about every 6-7 minutes or so. As Bob mentioned, they have a short attention span, so moving through the drills quickly and efficiently is key. Anything that is going to take a whole lot of demonstration and explanation is probably going to lose them. This case you have here sounds like that of a kid who just doesn't want to listen, and wants run over you. Sit the kid out until he's ready to behave properly and do as he's asked. Make him clean up his own messes. If the parents don't like it, and won't back you up, then it's time for them to find a different activity. Usually, I find parents to be most helpful in reinforcing the behavior you are trying for, so I'd start with that, first. Wastelander's idea of making the game and incentive, and sitting someone out of it if necessary, is a good one. Another approach to this is to start your class off as normal, but have some games in mind to play in the spur of the moment. If a particularly problematic student chooses to act out during your drilling sessions, sit him/her out, and then proceed with one of your quick games directly after that. He/she misses that game, and realizes quickly that acting out is costly. Best of luck moving forward here! Kids can be a challenge, but once you get them to fall in line with your program, it is very rewarding.
  23. I shall have to look into it. I love a good history book.
