There are three principles that martial arts are based on, some are based on one whereas others may inclued all of them. 1. Self defence 2. Sport 3. The art Kickboxing is a sport martial art whereas karate is based on self defence. If you want to learn probobly the best self defence martial art there is pick karate. If you want a sport where you don't mind taking a bit more pain and being a bit tough do kickboxing or do both.

7 and a half stone! You are joking. I'm 14 with no fat on me and I weigh 10 and a half.

I have just bought a book on plyometric exercises and I wondered if weights would help the strengh side of martial arts or should I do strengh exercises with my own weight e.g. push ups, chin ups, sit ups. Which is the best for martial arts. Mind you all the special forces of the world such as the SAS, US Navy Seal's don't train with weights and their really hard!

Wado ryu is one of the four largest karate styles in Japan but is steeped in Okinawan tradition.

Whats the best method of training for striking arts, kickboxing and karate?. How often should I train in?I have heard Plometrics should be added to any fitness routine for martial arts as you practice going from a relaxed state to a explosive state in a blink of an eye. I wasn't going to reply to this, but after what I read in the General Martal Arts section (hapkido vs Tai Kwon Do) I thought I might as well. Kickboxing is BETTER coz its more popular, you work a lot more on strenghing your punches and kicks so its excellent if you do another martial art e.g. Karate. Everyone knows what it is, more competitions as there is more clubs.

what do you mean by shotokan offshoot?

Whats the best sought of body for karate and kickboxing. THX in return

I think it was in sime film where there was a martial artist who could deflect the bullets using his hands.

No, definately not. Thai Boxers and kickboxers are very alike. They are both trained in power and strengh, especially Thai Boxers who are trained to take a lot of punishment. Can you see where I'm coming from. If you took a kickboxer and put him up against some karate man even though the karate man has a lot more techniques the kickboxer is trained differently to him. But Thai Boxers and kickboxers are trained in the same area, strengh, power and speed. I was only wandering what you lot thought. I post these sought of questions coz people at my kickboxing club are absessed with fighting other styles of martial arts.

I Am Sick Of So Many Things

I agree. You should get the black belt for the skill of the fighter not how long he has been doing it. I also agree that people with padding really piss me off. But apart from that I think everything else is alright. -
Hi welcome to the forums, feel free to ask anything you like there are plenty of experianced people in the forums that have helped me and will help you.

In a street fight I would not suggest grappling as a good self defence alone. In a street fight attack you might get attacked with a knife in which case you would block that strike and hold on to the attackers arm so you can disarm the knife from him. But don't think thats it. The attacker isn't going to give up, you have to hurt him so he wont be able to attack you furthur, by kicking and punching, grapling is only a temporary means of defending your self. Think about it. You get him into some kind of hold what are you going to do next. Hold on to him until he promises taht he wont attack you. I don't think so. Grappling is essential in self defence as you can use it to disarm the attcker, but you also need the power of strikes and kicks to injure the attacker to a certain extent. hope this helps

Can anyone give some links to websites where I could watch fight clips of different martial arts so I can see them in action and see what they are really like rather than just reading about them. The martial arts I was interested in veiwing were Tai Kwon Do, Kung Fu and other martial arts. Thanks in return
