i think they're changing that slightly because in some cases, the "children" are fully aware of their actions and should therefore be responsib;e for them. but yeah, parents are legally responsible for the actions of the children under their care. if a kid is throwing stones and you do nothing to stop them, you are liable for any damages caused by them stones. as for defending yourself, if you have the witnesses, it'll be ok. in the uk, we are advised to, if provoked, warn that we train in martial arts and if attacked will defend ourselves. this at least will draw attention from other people who will be then be witness to the situation. we are also told to give sufficient warning to the aggressor. generally, three times, loud and clear before smacking the guy is enough... but then the whole, excessive force issue is another thing you have to be aware of. stopping the guy and beating him into a coma are two very different things.

wc vs mt
Drunken Monkey replied to kle1n's topic in Choosing a Martial Art, Comparing Styles, and Cross-Training
well, if you trapping correctly, you'll end up on your opponent's outside so a clinch isn't really possible for the mt guy. if he's smart though, he'd go for a spinning elbow (on being pushed) to regain the centre (and to face the wc guy). but then again, thai fighters aren't the best boxers and this is where the wc guy might gain an advantage. note i said MIGHT. first the wc guy has to get past them legs and avoid the elbows coming his way. i'm sure you've seen how a wc guy aims to hit the head repeatedly. ALL he has to do is get into his own comfortable range... i'm a wing chun guy and have recently taken to some local san shou kickboxing classes. i don't come close to being anything i would call good but i know what i can or cannot use. (i have managed to do a under-bridge trap once though... gloves really hinder movement) if you, as a person who does not practice wing chun, knows that trying to trap a thai boxer is a bad idea, i'm sure the average wing chun guy would've figured that out a long time ago. you just can't say who is better ot who will win. think about it, if a wing chun guy is even seriously thing about going against a thai guy, in a ring environment, he would definitely train for it. if you just use words and examples of situations, anyone from any style can name a movement that will win that situation. -
shhh, they haven't taught him that in school yet...

i was asking in relation to how the clocks work... i always thought they measured the frequency of the atoms (cesium in this case due to it's natural resonance frequency beaing the same as that used to define the second). i can't see how the travelling at speed affects how the clock reads/measures this frequency.

one day people will realise that things you see in films and television are not to be taken as a be all and end all on the effectiveness of martial arts or reality...

the thing is i don't get how you can get ving tsun to be anything like how it is pronounced in cantonese. i am chinese and speak cantonese and i can't think of any words that has a "v" sound... as for the "ts" sound, i can't see why or how it is better/closer than the "ch". -
but cesium clocks have not a lot to do with light do they? you gave an example of how something may appear to be/show something that it isn't. however, i can't see how it applies the case of the cesium clocks.

excuse my ignorance on details but i came across a snippet of info that said that one of the schools/styles of karate actually has the chinese white crane kung fu "manual/script" as its most revered book. just want to know, do they actually practise that form/s?

i wasn't really talking about the hk students. if you trace his entire teaching history, what he taught in futshan is different to what he taught in hk. and yes during the later stages of his life, he didn't even teach the students in his school, instead leaving it in the very capable hands of wong and later, kan (just out of interest, who else took charge of the teaching?) my point is, up to a point, the way and what he taught was different because yip man himself was refining the system. anyway, i'm a bit lost as to how we ended up talking about this... -
What exactly makes something a martial art?
Drunken Monkey replied to Bdaze's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
i can only speak for the chinese arts but like i said before, "martial art" is a western term applied to a chinese method/system. you are trying to define a thing that originated in another culture by "dissecting" the name that was given to it so that the western world might understand it better. you should probably look back to the original names (from their country of origin) if you want to define what "martial arts" are. as for tank driving not being an art. there is a level of skill involved with driving a tank. no two people drive a tank in the same way. it takes work and practice and perserverance to be a good tank driver. there is an art to driving a tank. a good tank driver has good "kung fu". -
so for a dopler like effect to affect the observations, speed MUST affect time. which warp spider says it doesn't, so it can't?

an interesting question here would be to ask why bruce lee said what he did. another question would be to ask why did you accept that boxing isn't a martial art? and in the chinese language, i don't think the term "martial" is used. as you will have heard, kung fu means hard work. wushu means (roughly) art of fighting quan-shu means art of fist. looking at it this way, boxing IS an art of fighting. -
but doppler effect does not have anything to do with how the cesium clocks "read" their time, do they?
-
but it's not necessarily false either...

hmm, i never knew that it was taken to be absolute fact... i was always under the impression that they were just accepted as the most likely until a new discovery was made. after all, the sums do add up. isn't it all a bit too coincindental that all of them equations fit together and work together so perfectly? y'know, if it looks like a cake and tastes like a cake...

i think the best secret strategy is to train like your life depends on it (well, it might) just think, every second of every minute of every day you could be training. every minute you are not training, there are going to be people out there who are. if you want to win that fight. train to win. after all, the more you do something, the better you get at it. eventually, you won't have to rely on any strategy because what you do naturally (after all that training) will win you the fight.
