  1. my policy has always been that however hard you hit someone is how hard you will be hit. im a blackbelt and i dont care what rank you are, the point of sparring is not to hurt your opponent but if they leave an opening to remind them why they should protect themselves. i have this problem all the time because im not a very strong looking person, its mostly from new students trying to find their place in the pecking order and what better way than to beat up a blackbelt. and i dont really try to hurt them but i will not let someone try to steamroll me
  2. my style is made up of two styles, so the matsumura side would be chinto, and the shorinji would be seisan
  3. ten no kata is part of your style if im not mistaken, if you practice block and strike drills such as that it will familarize you body and mind as to how your opponent would be positioned when he is open that may be of some use. we have always been very good at seeing these openings and we do an outrageous amount of blocking drills in my school.
  4. Seisan Wansu Naihanchi Shodan Naihanchi Sandan Chinto at least for now
  5. anderson silva is a magnificent striker, probably the most dangerous in all of mma. but if irvin wants it bad enough then he will figure out a way to take him out of all his confort zones. and if he does win people will still make the excuse that anderson isnt fighting at his weight and try to take the win from him. i think it will be exciting and silva will have his hands full
  6. knee kicks are always good, but if he has already closed the distance and you have to stop him punching to the trachea to break it, eye strikes, as well as hitiing nirves and such around the neck.
  7. really bunkai is what ever you see, if you say "today im gonna practice bone breaks" then your katas movements can be changed up slightly to accomidate this. it is the same with anything, you can practice takedowns, kyusho, joint locks, skin ripping, bone breaks or even kill strikes you just need imagination. take what you learn from your basics and tweak it and youll be surprised with the things that youll come up with
  8. i agree, even though in karate you never make the "first" strike. but if your absolutly sure your about to be involved in a fight stop them before they have the chance to stop you. we practice a block where the block actually comes after the strike. you break the ribs with the punch and then strike nerves in the backside of the arm. i had it done to me(besides the rib breaking part) in my best friends shodan test and it hurt extremely bad.
  9. yes in some ways i do mean not telling them the full explanation of a technique as old school. this doesnt mean i wont give them an explanation though. i leave alot of it to them to figure out. they must learn how to percieve the technique in a different manner than i explained to them. thats the only way they will truly advance to a higher level than i could dream of
  10. i was told a story about funakoshi being thrown out of the shorin school by itosu for not wanting to fight. i was wondering if anyone has encountered similar stories. (i mean no disrespect to ant of the shotokan guys here just wanted some answers)
  11. o agree you do have to jump through a lot of hoops, my teacher however does not really require that. where most black belt test last hours upon hours mine was only an hour. i dont understand why they make you do half the things they do. so i can see where you can get that view point
  12. i really like utilizing nerve strikes when i block, like if i blocked a punch to the face coutering with a toe kick to the inside of the arm. or just using block to hit the nerve
  13. thats pretty dumb i teach my students to keep punching until they are stopped by there opponent, i think in no way is this brawling it is reality
  14. i passed, im hurtin though. had to fight a pro mma fighter, kung fu master and my best friend. it was quite a day though. im glad itll be awhile before i have to go through another one of those
  15. kyus are usually about the same as a dan test, but during oyr dan testing we dont do any basics they are look at over the week prior to the test
  16. i see your point, there really is a time and place for everything i guess it depends on the situation your in
  17. never had an experience with this, i think the only reason i would ever challenge another teacher would be if he was an obvious fraud and just taking advantage of people who dont know the difference between real training and a scam, or if my teacher was badlt disrespected
  18. go on youtube and look up a user named hempev he has a lot of good kobudo vids
  19. a broom stick is the most practical, someone with little training has a huge advantage over someone who is well versed in empty hand combat, with a knife you have to be able to know foot work and proper distancing and timing. would be much easier to defeat the other person with the broom stick
  20. i wanted to hear some of yalls reasons for training with weapons, most of the weapons we train with we will never have an opportunity to use so why do it? not saying it is wrong cause i am fascinated with weapons just want some of your feedback.
  21. i understand, there are things that i cannot show anyone i dont care if it was a judan i wouls=d still not be able to show them unless they have a rank in my system. and if he has no respect for the man that taught you he probably would not give the respect to the kata either. sometimes i will show people things from outside schools but i always change things in the kata so they dont really understand it and so they cant figure out the true bunkai of it
  22. tomorrow is the day, the only thing im worried about is i may have fractured a bone in the top of my foot last night. im still gonna fight i just hope it doesnt slow me down
  23. does he have rank sufficient to know these kata?
  24. i likw eh embroidery but i would really rather not have rank bars. mt teacher will be getting my belt and it will be in englsh and gave rank bars. i plan on breaking away soon and seeking ouy new instruction. at that point i will get a belt embroidred in japanese and with no rank bars
  25. i really fee; like i am cutting in when a wear mt rank to another class, the students there earned their ranks and their place in line. i hate when people that have no rank in my style get to stand ahead of me. just cause you are a belt in one style doesnt make you one in another. and if you are a black belt in one style and training in another it id wrong to take the techniques learned in your other class and teach them to your students. you have not earned the right to teach that system and probably dont know the things that a higher rank in that style knows you only know what you can outwarsly see, they trained for tyears to understand the true meanings and by teaching something you really dont understand is doing an injustice to your own studebnts
