Its all about reaction. Good martil arts is that you do when you don't think. Anyone can come up with a game plan is slow motion but real karate just happens.
We do a kicking and shifting drill the kids like. We take some of those big balls you use to do set ups on put a person in the middle and roll the balls at them. They must shift out of the way and side kick or round kick over the ball. They are constantly changing postions because they must dodge the ball if your hit your out and you must get the kick over the ball.

There is a base set of of applications that are just simple block and punch. Then you dig into it and find others like throws, sweeps, takedowns, breaks, weapon def., grappeling. etc. Teachers sometimes have problems with being taught.
