  1. Golden Rule of Combat Hapkido.... Every technique starts with a distraction....
  2. ^^ Definately a wake up call. If you think you have nothing people, wait till it is taken away from you (or nearly taken away). Cherish what you have. Nothing lasts. Remember: The only constant is change.
  3. Many of us have spoken from time to time about people we consider legends in the Martial Arts world. Some of these people are alive today. Examples: Jeff Speakman Dan Inosanto Chuck Norris Jackie Chan Kanazawa Gracie Bros and the list goes on and on.... My point is this... For most of these men, martial arts are their whole life. Like it is mine. When I can't be practicing Martial Arts, I like to think Martial Arts. One of the ways I do this is by coming on to this forum and talking with my fellow Martial Artists of the world. Presumably, our hero's would want to be doing something similar. So... I have two question. 1) are any of our hero's on this site? Do you know of any or are you one? If you have been mentioned on here as one of our "Hero's" and are perhaps hiding under a "secret" non-descript username, now is the time to reveal yourself. We want to hear from you!! 2) if there are none here.... where are they? What forums do they talk on, and if they don't..... why not?
  4. Recognising a style is DEFINATELY in the eyes of the beholder? Why? Because there are only so many ways a human can fight, and therefore, the crossover between the styles are HUGE!
  5. TSD also teaches the naihanchi (tekki) and bassai forms. Hmmmm, that's interesting, these are Japanese forms. Does anyone know where the crossover between Japanese and Korean content occured?
  6. I agree. I class the fighting posture as an imminant physical threat, they are doing that because they intend to strike. I will attempt to beat them to it. Having said that, few fights on the street start from a fighting posture.
  7. All sounds about right to me. Good TV doesn't make bad science good.
  8. Because he was great, doesn't mean he wouldn't have been better if he'd have spent more time on it. Then I guess comes the argument of balance. How much should we balance out the various activities in our lives. In this particular instance, I think it's fair to say he was finding the balance between MA and other interests, but two different MA's I don't believe fits into this category. FYI - My father was once disciplined for going to the gym. He was told, "If you have time to go to the gym, get in the dojo".
  9. Ah Ok
  10. That isn't Empi Zorbaru. The jump in Empi is just a Shuto-Uke.
  11. I personally find that the medium weight gi's are best for this. They move away from the body and don't stick.

    Kata

OK, let me rephrase, I'm yet to find one solution to a combat scenario that was not in Kata. Eg. for every way I know how to handle a combat situation (within the style), I have found these movements in the 26 original Kata.
  13. yes, but without good hips, you wont make the grade HHAHHAAH MWAHAHAHA. ROFLMAO Exactly!!! No rush. Remember.... Slow to learn, slow to forget.
  14. Tekki Shodan?? That's surprising, most guys that are stocky (like yourself) don't seem to like that Kata.
  15. At more advanced level I agree, but for a beginner, I don't.
  16. Yeah, that's what a spear is. It's a stick with a pointy bit on the end. Used like a conventional bo or used at close range with a stabbing motion... or, used to throw for long range. You never watched a cowboys and indians movie??
  17. You have a good point. The other side of the story is though, if you are training 8 hours a week in Karate, and 4 hours a week in BJJ, you are a jack of all trades compared to someone who just does 12 hours a week in Karate or 12 hours a week in BJJ.
  18. Ah, I just remembered the acronym for setting goals. S.M.A.R.T Specific Measurable Attainable Realistic Timeline
  19. Generally, Bassai Dai or Empi. Maybe Kanku Dai
  20. CV = Resume'/Profile No, I haven't created one for MA, but I'm sure it wouldn't be that hard.... There are templates in MS Word and Publisher
  21. What holes?
  22. Orca, you summed up my feelings exactly.
  23. As previously mentioned, MMA competitions and fights on the street are two different things. It depends entirely on what particular situation you are talking about.
  24. Exactly. Nothing wrong with starting at white belt. a) if they don't like it, they have the wrong attitude anyway. b) they will progress quickly anyway.
