  1. I used to use the Okinawan Tonfa, but recently, I attended a seminar where a Malaysian version was used. They were much thinner, longer and had a point on all three ends. They were heaps better. I'm going to see if I can get a set. Anyway, sorry to hijack the thread. Thanks for the pics, looks like fun.
  2. Use limewire. This is a great program and is free. I'd be surprised if you couldn't find it on that.
  3. I don't know a whole lot about Ninjitsu, but I believe a lot of the techniques come from Karate and Aikido (which is also a big crossover with JuJitsu). Obviously though, the "spy-craft" was then added for it's purpose. I would say make your first priority a good school and your second priority Ninjitsu. I understand that you are keen to do Ninjitsu, but doing another style well is better than doing Ninjitsu bad.
  4. I find it interesting that some of these names mean absoloutly nothing to me (the TKD ones mainly) and others are "plain English" whereas other people would be the exact opposite.
  5. I must admit that I've raised concerns because I feel that some of our students are coming through the grades a little fast and looking to grade after about 4 years training.
  6. I guess when it comes to TV, you need to remember that it's more about entertainment then correct factual information.
  7. Shotokan is the only one that sounds like it would not be for you. It works on very straight and powerful techniques. I think you would be more sorted to other styles. Also, Kempo (chinese Karate) or some of the other chinese styles like Wing Chun. The chinese styles often particularly focus on this type of movement.
  8. Ah, so we have a celeb!!! That's one. Anyone else??
  9. Rattan is the material they are made from.
  10. It just becomes the norm. I agree though. I don't think it is a necessary part of combat, but I do think it's one of those "Nice to Have's"
  11. I guess I stand corrected....
  12. I love it! I'll use that one!
  13. Perhaps give gift certificates to your students to give out. Other than that, maybe leave them around your local stores etc.
  14. That's really quite cute!
  15. A lot of people think that getting cold will give you a cold. This is a myth. A cold is a virus. Being cold is temperature. Two seperate things. Just that when you are sick with a cold, you feel better when you are warm. There are ill effects from extreme cold, but if you feel warm (eg. excersizing), you will not suffer any of these.
  16. I think to a large degree, the reason they are not done in "modern societies" is because it's deemed that the dangers far out weight the benefits. I agree.
  17. You mentioned you WENT OFF.... Have you attempted to explain the situation in a cool and calm manner. Perhaps try another way of attacking the situation, or another way of explaining your feelings.
  18. I think that comes down a lot to what I've been talking about in class the last couple of weeks. C - Centre O - Of R - Reserve E - Energy There is a lot of mental and physical ability that humans have and commonly don't use. Regardless of age, it's sometimes nothing short of amazing when we see someone who knows how to access this on command.
  19. I personally don't agree with this practise. Well, then again, I'm not sure. One chain of though is that it's a recognition of what they have achieved, not what they are. Then of course there's the other chain of though of you should be this or that in order to keep the privellage of wearing that grade. Okay, now I'm just confused.
  20. Oh that's hurtful Zorbasan!! (just kidding) Seriously though, if you do choose to open a school with us, then yes, we would name the dojo (would probably still be AACD - xxxx Dojo) or at least have a discussion of what it should be. If on the other hand you broke away and did your own thing, then of course it would be your choice. That's the way it should be too as far as I'm concerned! For example, we are affiliated with the Australian Karate Federation, International Martial Arts Alliance and various others, but none of these have a right to dictate our names etc.

    Kata

Please don't take this as an insult.. it's not, just a question to illustrate my point... Why create new weapons Kata just because you don't have them? Why not study Kobudo and then use the Katas that have been around for hundreds of years, or at the very least, learn them and then choose to either use them or discard them? What is it that would make your Kata better or more productive than one that has been taught, practised and perfected for years?
  22. Sorry.
  23. Combat Hapkido was created by Grandmaster John Pallegrini. To cut a long story short, he took traditional Hapkido and took out everything that he felt would not immediately work in the street. Therefore, it doesn't have a lot of the whip throws and other fancy techniques that traditional Hapkido does, but encourperates other various principles that are simple and effective.
  24. Congratulations. Hope you enjoy the classes!!!
