    How Long

Remember, the Dojo is just a building, but what you learn is in your head forever.

    Bowing in...

Nice Work. Would be a little easier with English translation though....
  3. It really depends, what are you talking about? Brazillian or Japanese? Two completely different games. Brazillian is nearly all groundwork and has little to no kicks. It does have competitions. Japanese is a more rounded art, but it all depends on how it's taught as to how much kicks are in it. There are no JJJ competitions that I'm aware of.... that's what Judo was invented for.
  4. I'm the same. I've studied both for there techniques and don't really care which name they use.
  5. "proper meridian alignment"???
  6. So true. As mentioned... the only way to apply differences is too look in more detail. But as far as I'm concerned, it's the greater motor movement that is more important. Just cos I see a guy throw a punch in the heat of the moment and the fist lands vertically doesn't mean he trains in a chinese style.
  7. Sure they are busy, but surely they are no busier than a lot of us. I don't know about you, but I have a full time job, a school to run and I'm heavily involved with a car club as well. Not to mention a wife and personal life. Some of you also have kids. A lot of these legends only do Martial Arts, so they don't have a full time job on top to worry about. What was Patrick McCarthy's username?
  8. Thanks for sharing! Those Tonfa are huge!!!
  9. HAHAHA
  10. I think the story line was based more around Goju, but the actual movements may not have been.
  11. Definately a favourite of mine. As far as practicality is concerned, one of the best (AFAIC)
  12. Indeed. That doesn't mean that scientific proof doesn't work though.
  13. That's entirely possible. I can do about 6 punches a second. What's the difference? The question is, how good are the punches? In my case... lousy!
  14. The time at which it takes to gain black belt is dependant on the school, not the style.
  15. Start slowly and work your way up. Generally you should feel discomfort at most, never pain.
  16. We're missing part of the story here... Can you please tell us what sort of setup it is (eg. Franchise, Affiliation etc) and also, what the old name and new names are. This might help us to form an opinion.

    Kata

That's a really good point. While I feel that the 26 Shotokan Kata hold all of the answers I need, if I ever feel otherwise, there are already plenty of forms from other styles that certainly will. If you are doing it for entertainment, I guess that's fine, but I just think from a usefulness point of view, it's a bit of an insult to the masters who created the systems.
  18. True, but the debate WAS about the use of stances in real life.
  19. I don't think anyone is saying that someone would "loose" their ranking so much as it just would not be recognised by someone else.

    Wrist Grabs

I think "lapel" grabs would be a little more likely to occur. But it would be more like grabbing your shirt to setup for a big right hand to the face. Exactly! Coming from the security industry, I have seen plenty of fights start with a lapel grap. Left Hand Grab = Right head punch coming. Both Hands Grab = Headbutt coming.
  21. Some great thoughts there! As you mentioned, these sorts of issues should be addressed before the grading. The only problem of course is that when they are up for grading, they know they will pass, but that's another issue.

    How Long

I agree, I believe the best workout for Karate... is Karate.
  23. Matt, I'm not sure exactly what it is you are wanting. There are some great suggestions here you could use to find what you are looking for. Do you have another question at all?
