  1. I've noticed if you stretch for 15-30 seconds and relax those muslces for 30 seconds more(by completely stopping the stretches or standing up), you can try stretching again for another 15 seconds adn this time you will be able to stretch more....(and repeat) if it hurts, stop stretching. this only causes you to get tense.
  2. not likely.... I will try to do more stretches though
  3. None, KArate is for the world!!!! if we are going to be dividing Karate practitioners count me out...... I'd rather have them all as groups of a big style
  4. I keep a hand in guard, the other chambered- not as intense as in Kata but pretty formal- I personally dont like the boxing stance....
  5. without Kata, there is no material for one to use in kumite. So people should learn the Katas and then practice them in Kumite. Both are important
  6. AngelaG you do have some points here, its not very good to meet strength with strength. parrying and avoiding attacks works well, now, mix them. avoid the punch, and parry with the block- thjis gives you enough time for a follow up- instead of just blocking to follow with an attacker ready to hit again. just a thought, dont take my word for it...(maybe I should explain it better some other time)
  7. If you know how to wait for the right moment, and you can do a full block(not just blocking at the wrist and expect the attacker to stand there) you can follow a block with a strike. We do it in Kajukenbo and it works for us. Of course, u train to block where u should, and to do it swiftly so the attacker is not standing there waiting for you to actually do something...
  8. well. a block is a block Mix a block with an intent of hitting and you have a counter-hit. katas ,however, have some blocks that are not necesarily blocks but watered down throws and locks(in some styles, not all). I have a friend who studied Karate for 7 years - told me, look: in this part of the Kata you really would be breaking someone's neck,, over here you twist the arm, here is a throw.... it was interesting because if you dont pay attention, you would think its just another movement without much purpose...
  9. I dont remember if I already answered here, but I'll answer again: Tang Soo Do Karate

    Guard

I was actually goign to open a thread on this.... I find that while practising Karate or Kung fu one does not need to adopt the boxing position. I have sparred in the boxing position and I find it uncomfortable for me to launch a full on attack... By using Karate or kung Fu stances not only do I find myself more comfortable but I also got to catch my opponents off guard- they were expecting a different stance. However, not everyone finds it comfortable and by staying in karate forms the footwork becomes a bit more complicated for someone without too much experience but it can be done. The boxer stance tends to be easier to manuever, but without too much footwork you become a well guarded punching bag.... so I say it all goes down to training, training a lot to become good
  11. oh , good! bueno saberlo, mi amigo.
  12. there are WC schools in PR but I dont know them personally. In Aguadilla, there's one. and there is another one in Cabo Rojo. Other than that, I dont know any other place that has them... I could get you info on the one in Aguadilla though....
  13. wont that hurt? Yes, it sounds more crazy then what i do with ym sensei. I won't say ti because if you do it wrong your hamstrings could go capoot and there goes your elgs for 6-8 monthsish. NO one wnats that.. could you give any pointers on something we COULD use?
  14. very nice! u know spanish. yeah, we love martial arts too, you know.... lol Saludos a Houston, Texas!
  15. yeah, get the kid gloves.... what would that serve? better explain a kid why it is wrong to fight over name-calling. he could get jumped while walking form school or something as he grows up, or become a bully...
  16. #1. a reverse punch is a power strike, it doesnt need to be relaxed because you need to apply power in it. #2. if you chamber your kicks, you dont get tangled with your opponent. You can kick as fast as you want, if you get tangled, your kick wont make it off the ground, or you could get hurt is you strike an elbow..... you should train to punch and chamber back quickly, even if its back to boxing stance, because it helps keep your guard up.Kicking should be done at the chamber, if you dont train much, speed wont come.... Also, I would love to see someone break a board with their groin without a cup and not be hurt. That would be a first....
  17. Use the clothes and bigger joints... the neck is pretty easy to get ahold of. you could also try training to grab someone even if they are sweaty.train train train.
  18. well, i find a bjj would have trouble with a wrestling practitioner. Someone from Judo, wouldnt allow the Bjj to take him to the ground, same goes for Aikido. Although I find the clinches and groundwork useful, you could use it in a fight, I dont find that most fights end up in the ground. I've found jjj to be more self defense oriented because it adapts the strikes to an attacker making so it doesnt really matter if you are smaller. Also, the techniques dont require someone to get too close to the attacker making it easier to finish up your opponent and move on be it to escape or keep fighting another person. As far as groundfighting, people think JJJ doenst have any, but it does, but all it teaches is to get the attacker off and some simple clinches so the attacker stays held where it hurts.
  19. I read about Chi Kung being used as a type of Kung Fu, and very effective at it. of course, you wont find much info on Da Cheng Chuan, but, its out there.... as to effectiveness, both tai chi and chi kug do the work. You get healthier, and more powerful as you train. For Tai chi: Yang and Chen style For Chi Kung: Zhan Zhuang Both tai chi or chi kung can give you what you need to take your karate to the next level, you dont need to use them as part of your martial arts training(for punching, kicking or anything like that) other than excercise.
  20. you'll get cramps in your aura??? do they even know what they are speaking of??? :S If you want to learn about chi/ki control, look for a tai chi or Chi kung master and start training. you could probable find books on ki training, but look for them at martial arts bookstores, that have respectable sources.
  21. Isometrics will help with your chi training, they do improve your speed and power but it takes a lot of time. The results are easy to see however. Also, isometrics help with concentration and control of your body. I recommend these types of excercises to someone who doesnt like to move around a lot(or cant, be it for lack of space, or just someone shy ) but would still like to train hard. Here I leave a link on those internal excercises: http://www.exerciseyourwillpower.com/isometrics.html
  22. Some of the original Kajukenbo techniques have palm heel strike as a means of blocking a punch, hurting the attacker's wrist and taking the arm away fromt he attackers body. Today, those same techniques are used. The palm heel strike is still acknowledged as an effective strike. --All kajukenbo techniques were used in street fights to test their effectiveness--
  23. Yes, I am from Puerto Rico- lived here all my life
  24. According to Sijo Emperado, "If it's Kajukenbo, it's Emperado Method." Since Kajukenbo is his creation. Some other's have put their name to "methods" to try and separate thier version from the others. But that's impossible, as long as they call it "Kajukenbo", then it comes from Emperado's art. The "Original Method" is sometimes also refered to as the "Kenpo" branch. Or the "hard style" method. It's base is kenpo, but over 50% of the combinations also have judo/jujitsu/or kung fu techniques blended into the combinations. I understand that perfectly well, you can see it in the techniques how one style continues into another style. This makes it all the more easy to mix more than one technique and call it your own. I'll do some research to see what I can find on the "Chuan Fa Method"
