  1. Welcome!
  2. Hello
  3. You'd be surprised as to the effects martial arts training has on the 'ol body. You start to use the muscles that are perhaps seldom used in other routine or sport activities. Or simply used in a different manner. I would suggest you work at a pace that is comfortable to you. If you have to take a breather then do so. I doubt your instructor will fault you for that or even have a problem with catching your wind. The last thing he/she wants is to have a student pass out or unnecessarily injure themselves, as that will accomplish nothing.
  4. Katas are the forms. By the way, let us know what you think about the two styles when you check them out.
  5. Hi and welcome. I study Kempo, and it's roots are from China and was developed in Hawaii. Lots of self defense techniques, katas, and weapons. What style of Kempo/Kenpo are you studying?
  6. Welcome aboard, and glad to see someone do their homework before settling or committing to something or place where they were not comfortable.
  7. I think it's a mindset you have to place yourself in when sparring or working technique, even kata for that matter. Of course when working with a partner, you do have to control your agression, but that dosen't mean give it up. It's knowing that if you want, you can injure a joint, strike a soft target causing damage, but you still want your partner to be able to train the next day!
  8. Make sure to not only stretch and loosen up your body, but your joints as well. Also work hard on learning how to break fall. Most people have trouble when it comes to break falls. The natural tendency will be to place your hand out in front to break your fall...........if you do this you'll more than likely break a wrist or arm. Food for thought, and good luck!
  9. Mine is a drawing of my school patch from my original style of Chinese Kenpo.
  10. I think it's personal preference myself. When I competed with Matsu Higa, I used a tapered hardwood bo, and another tapered one made out of Canadian ash. The Canadian Ash bo was of course lighter. But other bo's I have used before were made of rattan. Now I use a waxwood bo. Fortunately I've been able to experiment with different types over the years, and for me it's just a matter of what feels comfortable to me at the time.
  11. I've seen many martial arts schools start their adult classes as young as 13yrs. old. For the same reason MG pointed out, the ratio between actual adults and teens, there's usally more teens to adults. Also sometimes it may even have to do with size of the person and not the age. Teens tend to be more suited to training with adults than the younger kids based on size.
  12. Not everyone is as knowledgeable as they would like to think
  13. My training is usually privates, due to the distance of my Grandmaster, and Senior Instructors. So with that in mind, when I travel to them for continued instruction, I pay whatever the private rates are for the Senior instructors. Usually $100.00hr. If they come to me, and I finance the trip which dosen't cost a whole lot then my training is free, and it's usually up to as many hours as I can handle .
  14. No more ridiculous than walking into a MA store and buying a black belt and having anything you want embroidered on..............just be sure to be able to backit up
  15. I've performed in competition one year, and when I went to swing the bo around my body, I lost my grip , and my bo rolled up to the judges feets. Lucky for me the next year at the same comp, I held onto the bugger
  16. You can also look into the 100% cotton middleweights. I have a Ronin brand.
  17. Howdy

  19. From the little I saw from my non-high-speed internet access, it looked great and the music was jammin'................Good job, 2
