thoughts on Kuk Sool Wan?
Pacificshore replied to yojimbo's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
KSN Doug would be able to give you insight on KSW. My feeling though is to start up your training perhaps after you come back from summer vacation. I suppose starting one art and then another when you get back isn't necessarily a bad thing, but for consistency sake, I'd prefer to stick to one art. Just my opinion. -
Started at 14, now 37 going on 38

I just got through watching X2 this afternoon, and saw that Kelly Hu was in it as a bad mutant. In the flick she had one, maybe two lines, then the rest was a fight scene towards the end. In the last movie she was in, Cradle to the Grave, she also played a bad character with minimal lines. Seems like she's getting more physical roles in movies........I kinda like that The movie overall was better, I thought, than the first one, but then again anything with action/martial arts in it, and I'll watch it for the sake of entertainment

Hello!

Videos make for good supplemental training. With videos, you can get all the movements down, but you would lack the understanding and proper mechanics behind the moves. Plus in videos you don't get to see all the angles and minute nuances to a particular move, or set of moves. Just my thoughts

Half-assed or not, at least they kept trying and finally accomplished the break. Now as frustrating as it can be at times, that's when you offer your support, encouragement to practice even more and improve on the next break. This is just one essence of what MA is all about!

Just think of the forum as another dojo you belong to. Like Sai said it's about encouraging and supporting one another in their martial arts journey. You can read the post if you like or not, you can reply or not, it's totally up to you. If it's a member who wants to let us know of their progress, then great..............but if it becomes a matter of boasting/bragging, and a "I know it all" attitude, then that is something completely different. None of the post regarding a promotion has ever come across to me as someone wanting to be "feared", much less respected. I think everyone knows that respect is earned through hard work, dedication, as well as respect for others. So don't let these posts stress you out so .

It is a book that the student writes out everything they've learned during training. Probably should have added the word "note" in front of book!
-
Just interested in finding out how many of the instructors here on the forum require your students to maintain a training book as part of their training. I have maintained a training book for most of my training. If it isn't kept in my book, I have it recorded on video somewhere.

I fenced in Jr. College which was back-in-the-day . I mainly did foil. I think that my Kenpo training back then helped me plenty when I first started out . I did enjoy it, but have not done any since, plus there isn't anywhere that I know of that offer fencing.

Unfortunately the WB, as well as the other networks, have the mindset of instant gratification, or in their case ratings. Like those who train in the martial arts, you have those who understand what it means/takes to develop into a martial artist, and then you have those who are just there for the instant gratification of becoming a BB as soon as possible. -
Fireka: Try this.....start with putting your belt around your waist. Take the left end of the belt and shorten it to where you thing it'll even out with the right end of your belt when you wrap the remaining around your waist. With me so far? Once your belt is completely on, take the right end, which should be on top and tuck it completely under the rest of the belt. Now once that is accomplished, pull on the ends in a diaganal(sp) fashion. Fold the top end of your belt over the lower end of your belt and pull. This creates the knot for your belt. Hope this helps.

Congratulations to gheinisch & son, as well as KA on their recent promotions

Are you throwing the round kick with the back leg or front leg? In either case, you want to be able to pivot on your support foot as you retract your kicking leg back, at the same time square your hips forward. If you do this, you'll be able to set down in a front stance without too much trouble. Remember if you don't square your hips, you'll land in a much narrower stance. Then again it depends on what stance you'd want to employ for your next follow-up technique. Hope this is of some help.

When you say your friend's been in a few fights, are ya talking 'bout school yard fights, or tournaments? When you two sparred, did you interject rules of engagement? For example, even in semi contact sparring, did you both stop after "scoring" with certain tecniques? Or did it go to the ground & pound, or perhaps a submission? Is there a question of maturity in regards to his fighting? Is it outside the dojo? If it's in reference to tournament competition, then perhaps he's been lucky, or the calibre of competitors limited. However, always remember that anyone can have an off day, and that old saying that there is always someone out there that is better than you are.

Pro: In our system we start the bo at 8th Kyu(purple belt). The best type of bo is one that is comfortable to you. I have small hands, so I don't like the big fat/heavy ones. These are some of the bo's that I have used: tapered hardwood, rattan, and waxwood. The waxwood being thin diameter wise, and as flexible as the rattan if not more so. I personally don't like the bo's with all that glitter stuff on it, even if it is for tournaments. For contact training, I use the fire hardened rattan ones. They tend to last longer. Hope this is helpful.

KW: Right now, my primary gi is a Ronin middle weight(10oz.). So far it has held up and I've had it at least a minimum of 2 years. It is also 100% cotton. I won't go any lighter than that though. My other Gis are heavy weights, one being a tailored Satori gi, made from up your way. The other was a recently purchased Macho heavy weight, that I heard good things about and wanted to check out. Many times, it just depends on how ofter you wear your gi and how much they get washed. I like to keep at least 3 gis on hand so that I can just rotate them, and so far they have held up.

Interesting, I don't ever recall the black running when I got my belt even after heavy workouts. Then again we wore black gi's, so maybe it did, and I didn't notice it.

When I first started at 14, we did the normal warm-ups and stretches. But when I started my Kenpo training at 18, maybe 19, my instructor was an OCS candidate for the Marine Corp, so needless to say, our warm-ups were militaristic in nature. Lots of sweating, many nights of sheer exhaustion from plain 'ol excercising. Our motto..."Pain is Joy" . In the end it was all good. Unfortunately, the 'ol body feels some of that "pain" as I've aged , but not to worry.....I can still kick above the waist .
