  1. Let's try this again with a time. How about today, the 31st, at 5pm(PST). I'll check in then and hopefully we can put the Chat Room to use. For those who can't find it off hand, scroll towards the bottom where you can see who's on/in the forum, and below that you'll see Chat Room and the number of members in it. So, see you all at 5pm, my time
  2. Ahh...."blending", I knew I didn't have the proper terminology
  3. I understood it to mean that BBuilder's father reached an advanced level that just about equaled the instructor, therefore the instructor had no more to offer. Kinda like the 1st degree BB taking a student up to Brown belt, and can't show him/her anything past his/her 1st degree BB knowledge. Sometimes that happens in franchise type dojos. Just my thoughts
  4. Mike: Might I offer up a suggestion.....put your bo kata on tape so that you have it for reference down the road. Do that for all your katas if you can, nothing like having refernence material handy as you continue to learn all there is to learn in the MA
  5. I can see applying a joint lock on someone that's grabbed you, or isn't expecting to be placed in one from the outset. But if someone was to simply throw a punch or kick at you, one of the principles of Aikido, if not mistaken, is to re-direct their force. From there follow up with a lock or throw.
  6. KOOL What's the name of your Bo Kata?? Is it a traditional Okinawan Bo kata, or one from an Eclectic style of MA?
  7. Ok, I've been checking airfare for our trip to Kauai, and with all the chaos with the war, and people cancelling their vacations to stay close to home, the airfare seems to be climbing instead of dropping. I know the airlines are in a world of hurt, but seriously, do they think people will pay the high prices they're asking for? Deb, anyone, any answer to this?
  8. Sure there is sparring in FMA stickfighting. When sparring using live sticks, the fighters are armored up for protection. Or there are padded type eskrima sticks that you can purchase and use without having to be fully armored up. With the padded sticks, usually you wear a sparring helmet with a cage, and maybe some forearm pads. With the padded sticks, you won't run the risk of breaking bones, but you'd still feel the "sting" of the strike when it hits. As far as tounaments, some of the major rated tourneys have a category for stickfighting. There is also a big tourney held in the Phillipines for all Eskrimadors, Arnisadors, and Kalisadors(don't know if this is proper terminology). If you search the internet, I'm sure you'll find some info of the tourneys.
  9. I'll be in the Chat room for a bit if anyone is interested. Last time we did this there were 3 of us in and out. I'll be waiting!
  10. I just recently bought a Macho heavywt. black gi and washed it. So far the color has held as some of my other black gi's. Sometimes it has to do with the quality of the gi and it's black dye. At least in my opinion. Otherwise in time it'll keep fading until it goes gray. What brand gi is yours out of curiosity?
  11. Hey, If anyone can find a better place to live freely and prosper, then I say go for it. Nothing here is the USA says you gotta live here and be miserable because of how the government runs things, foreign or domestic.
  12. Thanks for the info Kickchick
  13. Well everyone seems to be leaning towards Aikido based on your previous training. My question is what are you looking for at this time in your training? I know you stated that you want to spare your joints and with the Aikido, even though it is a "soft" art, there are still joint manipulations and throws. I just know personally that at my age, my body can't take throws and falls like it use too. As far as joint manipulations go, I'm still stiff in the joints just like I was when I first started training . I'm just building my case for the art of Kajukenbo/ or Kenpo . Both Kajukenbo and Kenpo are self defense oriented, with Kajukenbo priding themselves as being a street effective type art. Kenpo is the same way, and both arts are essentially related to one another. Kajukenbo being more of an offshoot of Kenpo. Is the Kenpo school and American Kenpo school? I ask because in Kenpo/Kempo there are many variations, but most if not all primarily focuses on Self Defense techniques. As far as the style of Jujitsu you mentioned, never heard of it so don't have any info to share. Hope this dosen't muck up the waters of decision making. Ultimately, I'm sure you will find what's best for you .
  14. To the members who have family in our US Armed Forces, and in general who are currently in the Gulf or enroute to the Gulf, I'd like to wish you all Godspeed that you are able to end this confict quickly so that you all can return home safely. I'd also like to say THANK YOU for protecting our way of life. This message also extends out to our allies.
  15. Welcome Aboard
  16. Pro for Bo: Light, cheap, can find easy subsitute Con: Can be too long in certain environments Pro for Sai: Solid, stabbing/blunt force type weapon, great for hooking Con: Gets to be too heavy, can't find good subsitiute so therefore not too practical, a real nice pair can cost $$$
  17. Hi and welcome aboard
  18. Some say that you are suppose to measure from the web of your thumb to about a 1/2" past your elbow. Make sure your arm is bent during the measurement. I use the 18" Sai(s), or Zai(proper term for plural). It dosen't go past my elbow, but that's alright for me, because when I manipulated the one's that extended past my elbows, it would get caught up in my gi sleeves. So for proper sizing, they are suppose to go past the elbow, but I went with what was comfortable to handle. Hope this helps
  19. https://www.martialartssupermarket.com very reasonable prices. Another would be https://www.sakura-0.com also reasonable and quick.
  20. Just remember that 0000,000,00,0, and size 1 usually are for kids to pre-teen.
  21. How many plan on taking a vacation this summer? Do any of the vacations require air travel? If so, do you think that the current state of affairs, such as the high price of gas affect your decision to follow through with your plans due to the increase of airfare? On that note, KickChick since you are a travel agent, do you see any airfare wars on the horizon?
  22. Welcome Aboard
  23. Excellent point Heidi. S&W, I believe Shortstick answered your question well enough. The idea is to train and learn as you've indicated. But in order to do both, you must carry that same attitude outside of the dojo. So, if you are working a technique and beginning to get a hang of it, don't abandon it, or get frustrated just because your shown a new one. Ask a classmate to work with you so that you both benefit from each others knowledge. Continue working the technique in your mind, or do the movements in the air, as if you are shawdow boxing.
  24. The philosophy behind FMA when teaching the stick(s) is that it can be done empty handed or with a knife as Kirves has pointed out. There are many different styles of Kali, Eskrima, Arnis. But the basic principle is the same. Some styles are for close range, mid range, and long range. If you'd like even more info., hit up shortstick, as he studies Serrada eskrima which is a in-close range of stick fighting.
