  1. What is your current student base? Kids or Adults, or a combo of both? Along the lines of "word of mouth" maybe offer your students some incentives to bring in more clientle. Like an extra class, or 30min private lesson, and so forth. Cheap for you, good for them, plus more students
  2. Somtimes it's just the reaction between your sweat and the canvas material itself.
  3. Shotochem: In regards to the Juka series gi's, I've worn the 14oz. Gold and the 12oz. Emerald. Their 14oz. Gold is suppose to compare to the Tokaido regular cut. The 12oz. Emerald is a "tournament" cut type gi, meaning wider pants, shorter hem in both the pant and sleeve lenght. Duribility wise, both gi's lasted me while I used them. In fact my buddy actually took possession of my Juka 14oz. top, and it is still in good condition. About the only thing I didn't like about the 14oz. pants is that it wasn't roomy enough for me.........I have tree trunk type thighs . Shirnkage I recall was minimal since I still had to get the pants hemmed....tree trunk thighs and short legs......go figure . I liked the Emerald cut better since it had wider cut pants and I didn't have to get them hemmed. That gi I passed on to a friend since I no longer wear white. The Jacket was roomy too, at least for me it was. The only experience with Ronin is my middleweight, haven't the chance to wear a heavyweight in that brand. Maybe I'll have to get one when I retire one of my others. If you have any other questions regards the Juka series, just ask or PM me.
  4. Ok, here goes......................... currently what I keep in stock: Ronin middleweight gi-everyday use Satori(Canadian made)-custom tailored gi, very good by the way, 12oz. heavy Latest, Macho heavyweight: Embroidered and all, used for testing and the such Other brands that I have worn: Juka Dragon 12 and 14 ounce heavywt.-nice gi's and reasonably price vs. the Tokaido or Shureido Meijin brand-another quality gi and reasonably priced in comparison to the Tokaido or Shureido Well that's it on gi's. Alot of times it comes down to $$$budget and then personal prefrences.
  5. Hmm.......backfist, rising backfist, raking backfist, downward backfist, inverted backfist..............anymore variations Well seems to be a rather effective strike depending on target placement and all
  6. https://www.inosanto.com this should take you to his site. GL
  7. I took a look on martialinfo.com with the zip code you provided. It only showed 3 schools listed in your particular area. One was West Coast Academy, but no style listed, the other was Steve Amsler Martial Arts Center-TKD, Tai Chi, Yoga, and the last was the Thunder Center-Self Defense and Escrima. If I'm not mistaken, you are close to the cities of Westminster, Huntington Beach to the west, and Santa Ana and Aneheim to the east. You could try checking for other schools there. I know that the Dog Brothers(Eskrima) are out of Huntington Beach. As far as what they would charge or what not, I think you'll just have to call them and explain your situation and see what they have to say. Good luck in your search, hopefully you'll be able to get some training time in while you are here.
  8. Orange county, let alone Los Angeles county are both rather large. Perhaps the best thing to do is look up the yellow pages on-line or when you get here to find the numerous studios available. If you know the city in Orange county you'll be living in, then try the martialinfo.com site. I know that Demura Sensei is in orange county, I think his dojo is in Anaheim, but that could be miles from the city you are going to be living in, plus there's traffic to contend with, knowing the freeway system. There's also Bob White's American Kenpo school in Costa Mesa, another city in OC, these are but a very few I am familiar with in that area. There are certainly many other schools in OC, plus it will also depend on what you are looking to train in. In L.A., you can find the Inosanto Academy which is somewhere near LAX area, plus the Krav Maga HQ, in West L.A., and many more other places. But OC and L.A. county can be again miles apart, and the L.A. traffic is simply horrid if caught at the wrong time................which really there is never any good time to be on any LA freeway
  9. You'll probably see more of the Shotokan point competitors in Traditional tournaments as compared to the open tourney circut. However, there are a few that venture into the open tournies as well.
  10. I'll give KA this, they probably have a good Kids Program going, which attracts many parents and kids into joining. My buddy who use to run a dojo for his ex-boss had the same thing going. Excellent Kids Program, but screwy business practices in regards to the contract, and the high cost black belt program. Well my buddy got tired of his ex-bosses shinanigans that he finally quit. Lots of stuff that your kid receives for signing into these long term non-refundable contracts are cheap. I know, cause I've seen the stuff that my bud had to give out when he signed someone up. And No he didn't have any say in what kinds of quality stuff they should be giving out. It was all about the money for his ex-boss. If your daughter is happy there, I would suggest for the meantime letting her continue to learn the basics. Don't sign a contract though just pay month to month. If that isn't possible then do look for another place to sign her up. Perhaps the average time to achieve a black belt would be anywhere from 3-6years, with the avg. class being a minimum of 1hr. It also depends on the system your daughter is studying. Also your daughter is 9 yrs. old, say if at 15 yrs. old she attains her black belt, I hope she understands by then that she is only beginning to start her studies in her chosen art. Well good luck
  11. It's most certainly the beginning, but can be the end if you let it
  12. There are no Kyu's in the BB ranks, only Dan's: 1st=Shodan 2nd=Nidan 3rd=Sandan 4th=Yondan 5th=Godan and so forth. In regards to time could be 1yr to 3yrs., but also depends on the system.
  13. In regards to tests, sometimes it just depends on the amout of material they have to go through at different ranks. Some places include the drills as part of the test, some make the drills just part of their warm-ups. Some places may ask you to do all your self defense sets(if they have them), or just a few of them to make sure none are forgotten. It's hard not to compare to past experiences, but in this case it's best to "empty your cup", and absorb all that's new to you.
  14. For all instructors, what type of drills do you use for your adults to get over their fears when it comes to learning how to roll or breakfall? It seems that a good number of my adults who I teach have difficulty with this everytime I try to teach them. When I teach break falls, it's usually from the squatted position if for a back or side breakfall. Then on their knees when falling forward. Same goes for the rolls, I usually start them out on their knees, and what I have seen many times is hestitation on some of their parts. Any other drills, pointers would be great. Thanks
  15. Hi, I took a look at the website you posted and it's very reasonable if your on a budget or not . How much internal work they do is another question. Perhaps since they offer Tai Chi that's their way of offering the internal training of MA, therefore combining the hard/soft aspect of training. Have you looked perhaps into some Kung-fu systems? Or are any offered in your area? Many internal systems may just be as physically demanding as say a hard style system of karate. Well just my thoughts on the subject. Good luck on your search .
