  4. Black belt ranks in Kenpo/Kempo. Been studying since age 14, and continue to still study and learn .
  5. At times your Sai can get caught up in your uniform and such. Sometimes a shorter lenght is best depending on the type of movements in your weapon kata.
  6. Why not ....I've competed before in competitions using both Shotokan katas, as well as my old Kenpo katas. The more you can learn the better, so I say go for it. Just make sure you have a good understanding of the kata you choose to learn .
  7. Hi karatemom #1: At your son's age, karate can be serious, but fun at the same time. There are many ways to instill discipline in a child during their lesson, but it seems from what you describe, the instructor may be a little short on the kids. Or, if the child was talking and being disruptive, then I can see the instructor sitting them out. But I can only see that as a last resort to previous warnings. Also, it how the discipline is adminstered. Was the child taken to the side and spoke to, or was it a loud announcement for everyone to hear? Many schools have a kids program set up, and many don't. Is the school your child attend have a set kids program? Since it sounds like your fairly new at the school, I'd talk to some of the other parents and get a feel from them as to how they like the school, or to see if they may have concerns, but never brought it to light. In any case, since your son likes his training, just make sure he continues to have fun at it. If he no longer is having fun, make sure it's due to the instruction he's getting or lack of, and seek out another program. The last thing for you son to experience is a negative vibe from his martial arts experience. Good luck~
  8. Ok, I just watched this movie tonight and found it to be one for my DVD collection. The movie has the"gun kata" in it, and I know there was a topic on it, but couldn't find it, so I started another. What wasn't mentioned in the other topic, if I recall right is the final fight scene with good vs. evil. It basically was some wing chun stickey hands with each fighter having a gun trying to shoot each other. I thought it was pretty cool to watch. Also there was a sword fight, and after the good guy dispatches all the bad guys, he has one other dude to take care of, and he does it in 3 cuts. The final cut being the bad dude's face, from chin to forehead, quite visually captivating . Anyway, as I said a must for the DVD collection. If you have'nt seen it go rent it, it's worth the bucks in my opinion .
  9. Does your sister have a record?? Is she on probation or anything like that? Here in California, from what you described would be considered a misdemeanor offense, and she would have to be willing to sign a complaint against you. If she hasn't taken any action as of now, then maybe she was just using that as a threat. Whatever the circumstances, or how dysfunctional your family is, do your best not to get into a physical confrontation, cause in the end, nothing ever gets resolved.
  10. In my system it starts out around 4-6months then increases as you go higher. Also alot depends on the student and how much they actually practice away from the dojo.
  11. Let me add a little clarification. The explanation I provided was for when you throw a reverse punch. If you are executing a lunge punch, same hand/same leg forward, then in my opinion, your hip is still forward and locked. Just make sure your punching arm is in alignment with the rest of your body, ie. arms/shoulder/hip. ok, hope this helps even more .
  12. Think of rotating your hip out with your punch, if your punch stays out, your hip should lock in place. If you pull your punch back, then your hip should return. Use the knot on your belt to gauge your trunk/hip rotation. Hope this helps .
  13. Welcome aboard!
  14. Eskrima, Arnis, Kali is a Filipino martial art, that uses sticks anywhere from 21" to 32" in length. It teaches you how to manipulate the stick whether single or double. It teaches you attacking angles, defense and offense countermeasures. When teaching the attacking angles, it is done in the same manner as if you had a machete/short sword in your hands. The defense and offensive moves are done in the same way, that is to say that the strikes are done many a times in a cutting motion, as well as a blunt motion. How this applies to knife and empty hand is by applying the same principles and concepts. I would suggest that you do an internet search on Eskrima/Arnis/Kali so that you get a better understanding of it as there are many different systems in existance. Good luck to you
  15. Eskrima sticks are another weapon that would be practical to practice, plus what you can learn with the stick applies to knife and empty hand
  16. You have all walks of life that get into martial arts for various reasons. Of that, you'll probably get half that after time have a true understanding that martial arts is a way of life, and the other half who see it as achieving their black belt, and then moving on. That's just the way it is .
