Why is Shotokan so unpopular ? Can it be used in real life ?
Pacificshore replied to goedikey's topic in Karate
Take what you read or hear with a grain of salt. It is just one persons personal opinion. With 4 months time in Shotokan, you've barely scratched the top of ur training. Shotokan in my opinion is not a bad style, in fact many styles out ther aren't bad, it 's perhaps the person studying it. Continue with your training and let it develop naturally. You'll only get out of it what you are willing to put in. -
Why do forms/katas begin with left movements?
Pacificshore replied to TKDLadyInSC's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Never really gave it much thought . But in our system's first kata we move straight forward with our left foot and strike with a left uppercut. Our second kata starts with a 45* step back to the right and a blocking motion. Third kata starts to the left, and the fourth starts to the front, then left and right. -
Groin kick.........or Front foot leg sweep, back knuckle, reverse punch

Is one of Steven Seagal's movies gone straight to DVD release. Seagal was looking real bad . He wore all these jackets/coats to cover up the fact that he is out of shape and all. I often wonder why it is that he has gotten out of shape. Anyway in the movie, he supposedly is an expert in Chinese antiquties, and there is a connection between him and a chinese chi-kung master, but in all his fight sequence he still moves like the aikidoist that he is . By the way, the fight scenes also aren't that great . Just my qwik review.

Hey if you continue to train with what you've already learned, then your still a martial artist in my book, even tho you can't get to the dojo

WHat do feel is a Good Contract ?
Pacificshore replied to Shihan's topic in Instructors and School Owners
TKDLady, If the contract is broken because of the reasons you list, is there a pro-rated refund? -
Do you have to be approved by Japanese for Black Belt?
Pacificshore replied to Goju1's topic in Karate
I know that when I trained in Shotokan, our club was and still is associated with Nishiyama Sensei, and when it came time to test for our BB, we had to go to the main dojo in Los Angeles. Even prior to the test, it was highly recommended that you attend their BB classes. -
WHat do feel is a Good Contract ?
Pacificshore replied to Shihan's topic in Instructors and School Owners
I understand the need for the contract idea to keep the money coming in to the school. Personally I don't care for it, but to be fair to the students, maybe you can incorporate some type of small percentage, or time that they have to recoup some of their money back if they decide it isn't for them. As G95 stated, so long as you offer them what they are looking for in their MA training, then you shouldn't have much of a problem with loosing students. Good luck . -
Don't compete much anymore, but when I did I was fortunate to be successful(meaning placing), and have lots of fun meeting other competitiors

Lots has to do with personal preference. I'd stick with the middlewt. to heavywt., but no more than 12oz. in the heavy -
Police and striking arts
Pacificshore replied to Tombstone's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
You know that cops are always held to a higher standard when it comes to the use of force issue. However, when they get into a knockdown dragout fight, it dosen't mean that they should go immediately into grappling mode to control someone. The last place they would want to be if at all possible is the ground. Just think of all the gear they have to wear. Does not make it conducive to grappling. Plus, once they are in a grapple situation, not only do they have to protect themselves, they gotta protect their weapons. I would think that if and when they go to the ground, they would immediately try to establish top/back control on any suspect. Sure sometimes they may end up on the ground, but I wouldn't think that's where they want to stay for long. Just my 2cents. Oh, and one other thing, I don't think that cops give up their rights to throw kicks and punches whenever necessary just because heir cops. -
Work as a gardener and carry your trimming shears with you all the time, or just carry your tool box around that way you have your hammer, screwdriver, wrench, etc., etc.

Discipline shoes are another you may want to look into.

Well then, let me welcome you to the forum . If you'd like more welcome greetings from others, might I suggest the Introduction area of the forum .

Idmc, I agree with what you are saying. Is there a possibility of you going to their instructor to further your training?

When I got promoted to Nidan, we had every bb present from shodan to the Grandmaster of the system. Makes for a very lengthy promotion, as your bb had to make the rounds from the shodans on up to the Grandmaster.

Man, I remember back in the day when organizations weren't really a big deal. I mean we had our dojo association, but we never paid monthly or annual fees. Nowadays, everyone wants to know if you are a legit instructor, and I can see how being in an organization can help ligitimize you as an instructor. At the same time, it'll all boil down to how qualified you are as an instructor, and whether or not your students are benefiting from what you are teaching them .
-
Well your question is subjective in a manner of speaking. I think a good school is where you feel comfortable with the instructor(s), student population, and location. It'll be a place where you feel that you are getting something out of your training. One school may be for you and not for others, and vice versa. In regards to the instructor being famous, I don't necessarily see correlation on whether or not the school is any good. If the famous instructor is around to teach or watch over his senior bb teaching, then it may very well be a good school. If the famous instructor is one who really has no input at the school other by name, and is always away on trips to promote themselves, then it may be a bad school. Regardless of the instructor(s) status in martial arts world, I would tend to look at the quality of his/her teaching. That quality will then be transferred into their students. Well this is my opinion on the subject. One other thing, welcome to the forum.
