  1. How about a break with a back flip or front flip in it? Or you could do like one guy did in one of those televised MA tourneys on ESPN, and stack alot of bricks.....do a running start, and bust through them with your shoulder .
  2. I believe that there is an excerpt from Mitose's court hearing on the internet. In fact it might even be on the Tracy Kenpo website, but I'm not sure. Just from what I've read, Mitose was involved in loan shark type of deal where he expected to get back some $$ and then some from an elderly farming couple, and when that didn't happen he sent one of his students to take care of the matter. As a result, the male victim was killed.
  3. I did subscribe to BB magazine. At least I let it run out, but they still send me a copy. In fact the latest cover is with Diane Insanto. Just like you all, I think the content sucks. There use to be an English magazine called Fighting Arts International, the editor/publisher was a big Shotokan guy. The magazine had in my opinion very good articles stemming from around the world. But unfortunately he stop making the magazine. The only ones I get now are Inside Kung-fu, and the other was called Martial Art(former MA Combat & Sport), but I just received notification that the magazine will no longer be published. It was the one magazine that was to focus on more "traditional" arts, but obviously it wasn't good enough to stay in publication. There is a magazine called Budo International. European based, but they have them in limited places here in the US, so I'm told. Hard to say how good it actually is since I've only seen one issue.
  4. If there is one person that brought the art of Kenpo/Kempo to the forefront, that would have to be Professor William Chow. Many styles of Kenpo/Kempo can at some point trace their lineage back to Chow.
  5. Hi Cheeky: The side snap kick is a quicker kick, kinda like a jab punch if you will. The side thrust is more the power kick. Whereas I see the side thrust kick coming straight in, I see the side snap coming more from underneath a guard. Also with the side thrust kick, you tend to roll your hip over and lock out the kick, and with the side snap, there's no roll over of the hip, at least the way I use it. Hope this clarifies things. PS
  6. Welcome
  7. SF, I believe belts are optional in Krav, at least that was what I was told when I has at the main dojo in L.A. sometime back.
  8. Every time I travel down to the main dojo, I train privately with the Grandmaster or Senior instructors of the system, and I pay for my training just like anyone else. Why do you think it's silly
  9. Tiffin mats R the least expensive by far. The next best thing is Ebay. There's aguy who sells them for a decent price, problem is the size and thickness is limited to 4X8 and 2" thick. Makes for good take down and maybe some throws, but not necessarily for stand-up stuff due to the sinkability factor of the mat.
  10. That's too bad. I thought given their popularity, they would have more places over your way by now.
  11. Have you looked up the Krav Maga website to see if they have any schools in your area? That may be a start. Good luck .
  12. Krav Maga=Taking the battle to them Aikido=Bringing the battle to you 2 philosophies that couldn't be any farther from each other. It'll all depend on you as you train in each style .
  13. I agree with Sasori_Te on this one . Remember all the responses is just opinions, in the end it'll be your final decision as to what is right for you . Good luck!
  14. Welcome aboard, hope you enjoy the forum!
  15. Sorry to hear about the loss....my condolences
  16. yep that was what i was referring to
  17. Welcome aboard. It'll change at a certain number of posts. Can only go up from here!
  18. Hello and welcome aboard
  19. Yes, there is...I study Kempo, specifically Kara-Ho Kempo. As far as transitioning from Shotokan, I don't see it being a difficult change. It'll also depend on the type of Kenpo/Kempo you have in your area. I know you'll find more self defense techniques than you would in Shotokan. You'll also have katas and the such, as well as some weapons training. Good luck on the change
  20. Sometimes being a black belt has nothing to do with physical attributes, but of mental and spiritual attributes. Sometimes it has lots to do with the physical attributes. At the end of the day, so long as you know where you stand in terms of your own training, then that's what really matters.
  21. Nothing wrong with a white belt...I had one long time ago
  22. Back in the day, we use to have a partner stand on us as we stood in a deep horse stance. No walking though, just standing in horse with your partner for a set amount of time. The other "burn" is being in a seated position up along the wall, holding out front kicks, and puching up/sliding back down to seat position again. All this after a whole bunch of other excercises to "warm" us up .
  23. If you want to have a job that makes you happy, and want to make a living at it, then it is necessary to get into the business side of the martial arts. Just because you do that does not mean you have to sacrafice what you teach and how you teach it. Sure there are places out there that make a killing selling this and that to their students and parents, and perhaps have sacraficed in their teachings, but who says you gotta follow that path to be successful As White Tiger said, as long as you have a good prouct at a fair price....can't go wrong
  24. Ok, How many have either worked out on/own either one of the mats listed? What are some of the pros and cons for either based on your experience? I currently have the jig saw type mats for my garage, and the pro was the cost/storage. The con is the set up and break down. Plus sometimes pivoting can be a pain(you stick when you don't want too ). I'm now considering the folding type mats for quicker set up/break down. Plus I'm thinking with the vinyl cover, foot manuvers would be easier. Let me know your experiences so that I can decide if it's worth it to change out. Thanks!
