Welcome aboard....and yes, it is customary that you receive a certificate when you reach BB. Depending on the school, you may even be given your first heavyweight gi, or other goodies....I received a wakasahi when I made 2nd black in Kempo

SHOULD I STAY OR GO? DISRESPECT WITHIN THE DOJO.
Pacificshore replied to shitokai-student's topic in Karate
Obviously there are two sides to this story, however no one is forcing you from leaving or staying.....So make your free choice and go with it...my 2 cents -

That initial move where he grabs the officer's fingers and bends his arm upward is reminicient of American Kenpo's captured twig. But alas..it is movie-do as someone has put it -
Oddshaped people and possibly non-custom Gi's
Pacificshore replied to isshinryu5toforever's topic in Equipment and Gear
I have a custom made from https://www.satori-gi.com . I sent in my measurements and they took it from there . In terms of the sizing, the jacket is like a 5 while the pants a 4 obviously with the correct waist size. The waist on my pants don't bunch up in the back like alot of my other store bought uniforms. I prefer not having the bunched up waist. The thighs are plenty roomy, and I do not have to continually pull up the pant legs when kicking or say being a horse stance. As for the jacket, there is extra room in the arm-pit area for more freedom of movement, which in turn allows you to raise your arms up without the jacket raising out over your belt . By the way, go to the custom made uniform post, and look at the link for the Meijin uniforms that I threw up. There uniforms are nice, and you can mix and match for a proper fit . -

http://www.dragon-tsunami.org/Products/Pages/Meijin.htm Take a look here. I forgot about this web site. I've used their uniforms in the past, and turned out to be one of the best ones I've owned. -

Hi: Do you know where your instructor is having your uniform made? I had a custom gi made from a company in Canada, https://www.satori-gi.com . At the time cost me $130.00US which I felt wasn't a bad price for a custom tailored gi. The other thing that might not be as costly...depends on the seamstress..is finding a gi pattern, then going to a fabrics store and looking for 12-14oz weight cotton fabric, and having one made for you that way. -

It appears obvious that you have discovered that the thrust kick does not work on everyone depending on build. If that is so, then it is about target placement for the kick, as it is with the execution of the kick. As another member has pointed out, the hip joint or how about below the gut around the pelvis area?? By changing the target slightly, you may discover that the kick will be just as effective as if you were kicking someone much smaller/thinner in size. Hope this makes sense

second hand sparring gear in the greater toronto area?
Pacificshore replied to batman2's topic in Equipment and Gear
batman2, Look on E-Bay. You can get a new set for as low as $45.00 versus the $$$ you would get charged at retail prices or through your school. -
If you are attending Cal State LB, look up the name Richard Rabago(sp). I believe he teaches Shorin-ryu down around there. If not, he may have some of his BB that do. Good luck

All of them are. If you get hit, clubbed, stabbed, the potential to end up dead is great

I've personally gone with weight vs. height. This allows for more roomier fit

...and have they signed them up to your dojo yet and bought them their first gi??? Get 'em involved with MA right from the start!! lol Well, one day in class I was partnered with Sensei's wife. The baby started crying so Sensei held the lil' guy while he was demonstrating some fighting techniques that he wanted us to go through. It was hilarious, the lil' baby looked so content Not only that but Sensei motioned one of the students to return the technique back on sensei and stopped him mid kick and said with a big grin "You'd actually hit a guy with a baby!?" haha.

Fumio Demura Sensei has a book on the Sai. Although you can use it as reference material, it will be very difficult to learn from it. As for finding an instructor to learn the sai, look for some one who teaches Okinawan Kobudo, or any instructor that has had training in such art
