Scott: It's a good thing that your childhood friend has come to the decision to take up the journey into martial arts. Although it may have been long overdue(biased opinion ). At any rate, at least he has the bug, so to speak, to get started. Too bad that there have been many changes in the martial arts in your area, and many of those former instructors were lost to time. Seeing how you have the experience with you, I'm sure you will be able to weed out what mayturn out to be a belt factory. On the other hand, your friend will also have his opinions on what he would like out of his training besides staying physically healthy. So between the two of you, he may be able to find an art that suits him just fine

UFC/NHB illegal in California?
Pacificshore replied to PackerManDan's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I believe the name of the Indian Casino where they hold some of these NHB fights is called "The Palace", and I believe it's located in Lemoore, CA. Maybe you can find a site for them on Google. My bud who lives nearby to Lemoore asked me sometime ago if I wanted to go see some of these fights. Unfortunately my schedule isn't as flexible as his -
Yep, sounds like crap I wouldn't deal with myself. I can tell you though that their uniforms from what I recall were regular cut, not the "tournament" style cut. I will say this....it was the first ever uniform that I did not have to get altered after it's first wash. It actually shrank to my right size, that I will give the lady when she sized me a uniform in person.

Man, I sorry to hear about the Dragon-Tsunami customer service. I always had good dealings with them back during my Shotokan days. Perhaps it was because I would deal with them in person versus over the internet or phone. Come to think about it, back then they didn't even have a website. This is not the first I've heard about their lacking in the customer service department. I really enjoyed their Meijin uniforms when I had a need to wear white. If I ever need another white gi, I'll probably just go and track them down since they are about 2hrs. south of me, and make my purchase in person, so that way there is no misunderstandings.

Sounds like the most appropriate term would be "deflecting the attack". If you are 45* to their attack, depending on which way they attack means which line of deflection you will make. You either go inside of the attack or outside of the attack, and counter. Like P.A.L. mentioned its about timing and movement all at the sametime. As Pineapple also put it, if you take away one half of their body, you could effectively also eliminate the other half, so long as you have some part of their body between you and them. Hopefully this makes some sense

Yep, Unfortunately many uniform sizes are just a mere guide. Unless I know the brand I'm buying...seein' that I had one of their previous uniforms, I always go by weight versus height. Since I usually have to have my uniforms altered, I'd rather it be bigger than smaller. Plus washing and drying tends to shrink'em up with time

Unfortunately you may need to provide a little more info in what you're seeking. Passing the guard to me means that I have someone on their back, and they got me locked between their legs(guard position), and now I have to "pass" their guard, by breaking their legs from the locked position to allow me to gain top/mount control.

time to preserve the tattered gi for sentimental value

I had a Juka Emerald gi before. It was one of my best gi's. I found it to hold up well for everyday use. I've even used the Juka Gold, another excellent gi. Jukas are suppose to be designed like the Tokaidos...meaning similar in cut, but much more less expensive. I have also used the Kwon tournament cut gi, but in my personal opinion, the Juka would be the better buy

Speaking of Instructor College.....has anyone ever attended the course that Jerry Beasley holds at the Radcliff University back east?

Hey Dani.....Welcome to the family

I prefer the type of gloves that wraps around your wrist and secures with velcro. It'll give you added support, and eliminates the use of hand wraps

For your son, stick to the student weight uniforms, they are usually the poly/cotton mix and anywhere between 6-8oz. Tiger Claw makes a decent one, and will last for some time, I know cuz my son had one that he out grew when he first started training. 10oz is getting into the middleweight uniforms, and anything beyond that is considered heavyweight. 100% cotton breathes better, but depending on the size your son may need, most just come with drawsting waist. I know most parents and kids prefer to have an elastic waist with the drawstring, and those are mostly found with the poly/cotton mix. I know of a few brands that offer a child's 100% cotton uniform with elastic waist and drawstring. One is Ronin brand, and another is KI. To find the Ronin brand search for Kinjisan Martial Arts Supply. For the KI brand go to https://www.ki-international.com As for you, you'll be able to find uniforms that'll fit you, and not cost an arm and a leg. You can check out https://www.kwon.com their uniforms are cut larger than most. Ive also heard that Pro-Force uniforms are roomy. Or on last suggestion is looking at https://www.juka.com they carry a 10oz. cut for the body builder type, so that tells me that it sounds roomier than most. Hope this is of some help.
