  1. My Sensei said something about kicking a sand-bag 100 times lightly with each leg every day to toughen up the shins. He's insane and old though, not to be trusted at all...
  2. I think that's the only definative answer. When in Rome...
  3. Cool, thanks. I just like watching stand-up fighting more rather than ground work. For me it is more exciting to watch. It's like hockey and basketball in my view.
  4. Never bottle it up I guess.
  5. If you analyse kata and don't just go through it as a series of meaningless movements you will be able to defend yourself. But if you don't know the bunkai, you don't know the kata and if you don't know the kata, you can't defend yourself.
  6. What happens when Harry's scar is the only one left?
  7. Does UFC only have grappling under essentially no rules?
  8. I went and trained the night I found out my grandmother died. It helped. We buried her body about three weeks ago. Yeah, I took to drinking a little more heavily the half-week before and after. Then I shook it off (the drinking) and went back to my normal routine.
  9. There should be a list of the old-timers put up somewhere.
  10. But what is kumite without kihon?
  11. Agree to disagree?
  12. Kata is quite important in our dojo. I would say that it's about 60/40 for kata. My dojo is odd though, it most other kyokushin dojos it sounds more like it's 30/70 for kumite.
  13. Cool. Do you have to do fights? How many and for how long?
  14. Good, brief answer.
  15. That's what you get for demanding your own version.
  16. Hate to crash the party, but there are no muscles in your hands.
  17. But your belt is a symbol of something. It is a symbol and essence of all the hard work that you've done. We're not talking about religous fervour, that's about one of three rules (that I know of) that go into the spirtitual side of martial arts. If you don't respect one the others may erode with time as well ("Why do I bow when I enter the place I train?"). If that belt was anything but white I doubt it would be as obvious that you've got grass stains on it. Leave it alone. You'll get a new belt soon.
  18. Exactly what styles do you train aefibird?
  19. Oh, I'm a thug. Definatly. They're just titles, categories, labels. Those names mean different things to every person who hears them. To say "I'm a thug" means anything from, "I've gotten into a few street fights" to "I've spent time in jail." Same with warrior. Labels don't work.
  20. I'm new, but I'll give a stab at answering. The matches you will see are contact, knock-down or knock-out competitions, and non-contact. Contact Matches: Points are given in matches for knocking the person down, kicking them in the head or making-them-double-over-in-pain type of thing from a strike. Points are taken away for using prohibited techniques, such as punches to the head (dangerous and painful with no gloves) and knees to the groin (just a cheap move). At the end points are added up to decide who wins if neither fighter was knocked out. If a fighter is knocked out, the other fighter wins. The fours corner judges will also factor into their decision the spirit shown by the two fighters and the level of their skills (whether they're just brawling or actually using technique taught in class). Non-Contact: The corner judges make their decisions based upon who makes more strikes that come within six inches of the other persons body without getting blocked. The person with the most unblocked strikes wins. Kicks must be above the waist and no contact should be made on strikes, but it is acceptable on blocks. If a person were to make contact on punches and kicks, even if it were to be light, this shows less control and it would weigh against them in the judge's final decision. I'm sure there's more to add, but I don't know all of it.
  21. Yeah, I got it. A bit pricey, but good. My prediction about the half-blood prince was that it was Dumbledore. Nope... Definatly needed to be edited a bit better. Now we'll have to wait another two or three years for the next one...
  22. Kyokushin Karate. IKO-C.
  23. 10-15 minute walk/3 minute drive.
