  1. I heard that the figure of 12 million is quite out of date. Wasn't that the figure given in books published more than a decade ago?
  2. What have the past results of these type of competitions been? No offense, but I can't imagine that the kung-fu people would have won many matches.
  3. In what region do you live AceKing?
  4. Someone on a "Lost" forum joked that Mr. Eko was a master of rock-fu.
  5. Although no one would guess it my oldest nickname is Foxglove, like the flower.
  6. I think everyone knows how I feel about belt questions...
  7. http://www.kyokushin.ca/dojos/ottawa.html
  8. Then I wouldn't call them a black belt, I'd call them a faker!
  9. Good question! I was wondering about the same thing when I was watching some fight videos (probably yours) lately. The refs always seem to jump in pretty quick after the victor thows that one last punch. Are the refs worried that the victor might start attacking the guy on the ground?
  10. So many people (not particulary anyone here) go on and on about how learning fighting terms in japanese is useless and how we all waste time studying these terms under a harsh light in a cold basement in our spare time when we could be training. But when I first entered karate I didn't know more than three terms in english about fighting. I pretty much only knew kick, punch and block. I've just learned these terms in japanese and it's never been a problem. You have to learn the names for techniques, why not let it be in japanese? It's not too difficult to transfer back and forth between simple japanese and english. If someone else doesn't know the japanese for a technique, show them the technique and they can probably supply you with the english. It's like being raised in a bi-lingual enviroment, which is always preferable to a enviroment with only one language.
  11. There have already been plenty of "What belt are you?" posts. I know it changes, but it can still be a bit redundant.
  12. Or this other kyokushin site... http://www.kyokushin.ca/dojos/calgary.html
  13. Thanks for the answers.
  14. It's weird how everyone assumes that the tough people have been in the military. Ana-Lucia and Locke have both been accused of having a military past.
  15. You don't think that karate contains elements that are found also in the Samurai tradition? The whole respect, honour, etc. thing.
  16. Interesting post, I just had to say that this part made me laugh.
  17. From My Lawyer Sister: "It really depends on the terms of the contract. There probably is a clause if you want to break it early. But it is a contract, you knew what you were getting into. Get the contract and go over the terms with a fine toothed comb and figure out how to get out of it." So I guess, a contract is a contract is a contract. The whole "I didn't really read the thing" is a technical argument and isn't steadfast in court. I guess you could try for a compromise, or fake an injury. Act like you screwed up an elbow or knee and get a doctors note. But dude, 300 a month? And for three years? No offense, but it sounds like a McDojo trying to put you in the poor house. That's 3600 a year! Training should be on a gold leaf floor if it's that pricey. You have to agree that it wasn't a good idea to sign the contract.
  18. Kyokushin, but I didn't make it into the poll I think.
  19. Jussi and Shogeri thank you for your opposing views. You both had some interesting points. JimmyNewton you have a sweet set of amour there. How durable is it? Feels, I didn't know that about kneeling and standing up, I'll have to pay more attention from now on. Fightingchickens, it seems odd that you say karate was only introduced in 1922. But there would have been other fighting arts introduced at an earlier time than that? Maybe they were not called karate?
  20. I would like people to explain what the link between the samurai class in Japan and the genesis of karate is.
  21. I just made a fox, a box, a sitting man, a butterfly, a little pot/box thing and have failed many times at making a kneeling nun. Damn you nun!
  22. Yeah, those pictures look like we'll have one of the tail-section people's flashback. Or were they completly fabricated? All those pictures of kids give me the creeps, because they must have been killed or taken by the others.
  23. I just bought a book about oragami yesterday! It got it second hand, but it's in pretty good condition. I think I'm going to try to get together my own paper. I think we have some think colourful stuff around that I can cut with a paper-cutter.
  24. I've seen a couple of those types of fights and I've never been too impressed.
  25. Yeah, Teddy Bear person is totally Alex. Is Alex a girl or a boy? I thought it was a guy who was going to die next. I would think the logical answer would be Sawyer, but too many people love him.
