  1. For this reason I try not to implement locks as defenses anymore. Im pretty small for a guy. I never could put the locks on when I was less strong. After a few years of going to the gym I can make them work. That doesn't mean I would use them though. The simplest defense is to just hit them end of problem. That is why I don't like locks being taught as self defense techniques. Hitting is just more efficient.
  2. The idea is that when you in a martial art with a set techniques expected off you, you just follow what the founder did and don't express how you would do that particular technique. Thus after years of refinement your technique should be different in JKD plus once you have reached the highest level you are allowed to tailer it to yourself to improve. The philosophy is confusing and not a lot of people understand it personally I only understand set bits. The rest is crazy and never has the meaning you see on face value.
  3. There was a guy I think his surname was bates in the 1930's that apparently had a method.
  4. From private reading on JKD there are loads of different ways we throw the sidekick. Man there are just so many its unbelievable my mind boggles. They differ in the way the footwork leads to the side kick and in the way the side kick is chambered which has a lot to do with the level of commitment in the kick. The sidekick that bruce lee used most often in the movies is known as the rear side kick. Due to the fact how much he leans back into it. The most used sidekick is the side stop kick. Which starts like a front kick and then is applied to the opponents knee or just below the knee. This is usually done as soon as the opponent advanced towards you. Thats what I gather anyway. I agree that the pendulum does telegraph but really its no different to traditional footwork in this respect. Its pretty hard not to telegraph the entering part of the kick.
  5. That technique is called the Jam. I was told you cannot defend it and from what I have learned if you opponent doesn't know its coming then yes it is very difficult to defend. We pretty much do just lead leg stuff but we also do rear leg work occasionally, its very much a lead side art. Grappling in JKD is usually limited to defending against grappling rather than rolling around on the floor grappling. Although I haven't done any I have learned that basically you learn to get back on your feet as fast as possible back to stand up fighting because you don't really wanna be on the ground on hard floor on the street especially if you against more than one person.
  6. They are very good. Like others have said you have to be careful not to hyper extend but if you careful then you can work at full speed which is what you want to do if that's when your working on. Just stop your punch about 3 inches before full extension. For JKD weighted punching is recommended. What you do its do a set of weighted punches. Then try and hit something without the weight. Imagine you are still holding the weight when you hit it.
  7. It seems like your understanding it well. Its nice to have someone with a shared passion I have so many books on JKD its unbelievable considering I have only been doing it a year. But I must say that ever since I started I just love it. I can't get enough its like a drug. Those drills look good and I have done the L shape one. Like I said I can't stop the enemy at the gate yet either. Its just something to aim at being able to do you know. I'm sure if we train hard enough we can be as good or better than Bruce at it.
  8. I am 20. I have been doing Martial Arts since I was 7. Its such a habit now I can't imagine not doing them.
  9. I do JKD. I haven't been on here in a while but thought I would check it out. Yes JKD Footwork is based on fencing and boxing but it is not just straight forward and backwards. This is just beginner footwork and is not comprehensive at all. When you advance you will use variations of these with curving and sidestepping. This is basically the baby stuff. Backing up rapidly is usually done after an onslaught and I would usually use the pendulum to move back as fast as possible. Its kinda of like skipping back and is very fast. In fact I think moving back is faster than moving forward. There are lots of good JKD steps Stutter step, Rocker Shuffle, Heel and Toe sway. Equally we don't just back up, we are not taught this in certain situations you have to go back. But JKD is by no means passive. As it is said the easiest way to end a fight is to just reach over and knock the guy out. Very poor quality but we do use side stepping but mostly its interception. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0-6fjoVT1Zk Plus this is Bruce in 1967 I think, 5 years later he sparred very differently. I have heard that he found no need to move at all. He was pretty still and as soon as he saw opportunity he would hit the guy. As soon as he saw preparation he hit the guy. Ted Wong said that Bruce was so fast he didn't need to move much anymore. The key is to stop the enemy at the gate upon preparation ( Much easier said than done), that is what JKD is all about.
  10. I guess the difference is although it was flashy and all that if it works then it doesnt matter what a technique is like. Its all about function over aesthetics.
  11. That was just funny looked like he was losing anyway and that is just insulting.
  12. This guy looks like he knows what he is talking about. I had a look at a few others and some of the stuff was very good I may think about implimenting this into my training. Cheers

  14. I have never seen these two guys before I have not got into the whole MMA thing really. But from what I have researched on the two fighters Shamrock will win. From my limited knowledge of MMA correct me if im wrong but very few finish standing up so going with that Shamrock will win.
  15. Thats a really cool idea congrats
  16. I am going to ask you some questions and come backwith the answers Why do you train in martial arts? What do you wish to achieve by training in martial arts?
  17. Well first things first to get straight is the definition of power Power=Force x Velocity As we all know F=MA=Mass x Acceleration So Power=Mass x Acceleration x Velocity So what this basically means is that the more mass that you put into a punch that harder you will hit. Also the more acceleration that your arm has the more powerful your punch will be. The greater the final velocity also the more power your punch will have. For instance take a standard swing for example by someone that is untrained. If he just moves his arm at a constant velocity he is going to have less power than if he is accelerating as that is part of the equation so if he accelerates to that same velocity throughout the travel of the punch it will have more power than one that accelerated reached a velocity and continued to travel. In regards to damage caused, why a straight punch to the body may cause more damage than a hook punch is to do with the pressure exerted by the punch. Straight punches are generally exerted to a smaller area than the hook punch due to them being able to be targeted better by the average practitioner. Pressure=Force/Area So the bigger the force in a smaller area the more damage is generally done. If a locomotive moving at slow speed with minimal acceleration or a bullet at high speed hit you with a large acceleration which do you think is more likely to kill you even if they are exerting the same amount of force. The bullet of course. End Physics Lesson *bows*
  18. Less cardio More Calories Also in regards to cardio I believe that HIIT runs are more effective than straight running. Try doing a 2km hit run between lamposts let me know what you think. Sprint between one set and jog the other set etc etc it has been proven to be more effective than straight running. Make sure you push yourself. 2 months is way too little time to put on 5kg of pure muscle. You will struggle to put on fat with all that cardio. Do 3 full body weights days like Takedown has suggested no weight machines only free weights. I think we can probs get you up to about 67Kg at best.
  19. 19-03-08 40 min HIIT Run covered about 3 miles 20mins Stretching Leg Raises-20 Shadow Boxing
  20. There are no arteries/ veins in your chest that would be able to be compressed so its just a lack of being able to breath. The technique is a form of a choke
  21. Personally I think if someone comes at you with the intent to kill you, you should kill him first end of story. The problem with that most courts may not see it that way. Personally I think it would be very hard to kill someone with one strike so im not worried I will use full force to defend myself. Plus you dont have to use lethal attacks at all you can use useful 'dirty' fighting. Eye jabs, groin shots etc
  22. I am lacking in the body weight department my punching is a lot better than most of the people I know but thats only because I know how to punch properly HAHA my current bodyweight is about 130lbs so I think I would struggle to hit much more over 700PSI
  23. If you train in JKD in the UK I would be interested to know where you are website etc
  24. To the guys that have done it I would be interested in what you body weight is if you dont mind?
  25. True unless your opinion is based upon a fact and that fact is proved to be wrong
