I took 3 years off and resumed again and was in the same boat. after i went through the katas a few times, they all started comning back to me. they are in the back of your moind..you just need some refreshing. i'm sure one of the senior students wouldnt mind helping you out with katas and stuff one saturday or something.

yeah i believe this could be a test in itself.

however, I do need to work on my typing. sorry for the typos....

thanks scottnshelly..you see where I'm coming from. Anonymous one..you almso seem as if i'm asking for playtime..especially by saying let the men stay and the bos go home..compelty not what i was getting at. You keep saying "fun". I word I never even utteres..but asked about how to keep classes fresh. 2 entirely different things. I think in anything..work, school sports, etc..the coaches, instructors, teachers or boss's have to make it interesting for their athletes, students, karatekas, employees, and so on. while not a martial artist, Dean Smith, who is regarded as one of the best basketball coaches ever, notes certain things in his book on how he would keep practice fresh and interesting in order to obtain maximum output from his players. I was just wondering deifferent theories to apply the same approach in the MA world. I can promise you I train with extreme intensity and diligence. was not asking for sugarcoated fun playtime sessions...just ideas to keep from being overly repetative.

Stomach conditioning...all help appreciated!

even practicing taking light contact to the stomach will make it conditioned for contact -
I know everyone out there is guilty at times (at least once) of feeling bored with the same ol' routines class after class. I know they are meant to make students ingrained with the lessons..however.. I was wondering what your senseis do, or if there are instructors reading this..what you guys do to keep your classes fresh. not saying classes always get stale, but hopefully you see what i"m getting at. just wondering how to keep classes from becoming mundane. thanks

assuming that fighting is the last resort..i would strike first. seems as if action is faster than reaction. also seems that fights are always preceeded with a verbal exchange first. weather its swearing, intimidation, verbal abuse, etc. generally you kow if its about to go down. you can always dictate what sort of force is nescessary and what you want to inflict. say for some reason this guy is faster and attacks first..and lands..it could do sever damage to you. if you know the fight is inevitable, i would do what it takes to have the upperhand by attacking first. i guess every situation is different though, and topics like this can be hard to hypothesize.

enter the dragon is over rated. =the fight scenes are just alright, and I think he showcases more skills in Game of Death or even Chinese Connection. love bruce lee, just think enbter the dragon is overhyped. drunken master has way better fight scenes in it. Ong-Bak is also a good one. The Sho Kusugi (sp) movies of the 80's were pretty good 2. did anyone here ever see the last dragon-bruce leroy. pretty funny.

Stomach conditioning...all help appreciated!

our gym has this device you can put your arms in to support yourself, and do leg lefts to target the abs. works well. also, those excersise balls..like abig bouncgin ball to do sit ups on works well for relieving stree on the lower back. i'm sure you've see them..they've been around for a while now. also, like someone else mentioned..breath out struck. kia, tighten the stomach simultaneously if punched and it will be quite beneficial. good luck -
but there is the possiblitly you will test faster than others because of your experience. just seeing if you are willing to go back may be a test in itself. i wouldnt worry about it.

i'm a Shorinkan student in Charlotte and going to working out with Sensei Willie McIntosh in Shelby NC. thats still about 2.5 hrs from greenville though.

ok, mine is complete. i have the base sunnk 3 feet deep with bracers on both sides per sintructions i've seen on mutiple sites. for the top, i glued a solid square of a shoe sole wrapped in rope. the board was cut at an agle so it has enough "give" when struck, yet is still a relativly hard surface. i then did some landscaping and planting around the area so it is aesthetically pleasing as well as functional. overall, i am quite pleased with the end result and will continue to use regularly. thanks for all the input!!

DID HE HAVE STRAW O CUSHION UNDER THE ROPE?

i see your style is Shorin Ryu. not located in NC by chance?

i wouldnt sweat it. just like my signature. the wise and succesful are always met with violant opposition by mediocre minds. translation.. seems like when anyone is trying to do something good and positive for themselves...you always have dummies trying to bring you down. i'm sure when Michael jordan was shooting basketball round the clock..his boys were liek..come on man, lets go do this, that, and the other...and look where he got. even bill gates was made of. you can't let it eat at you if people give you hard time. they're usually just jealous. i know how you feel though. i used to HATE when people made the waaaaaaaaaaaaaaa sounds and gdo goofy things with their hands kind of poking fun. now i just do it along with em. some one was razzing me one time and even put my hands up ion the daniel-san crane kick stance and wasasked to see if i could kick him in the mouth. you just gotta go with it, and not let it bother you.

also, i'm using cotton clothesline rope. I dont think rope fibers will be a problem. I guess the main thing i was wanting to know was about tying it. i've seen many sites talking about how to build the post, dimensions, etc, but none have specifics on rope tying. i guess as long as its tightly bound it doesnt matter.
