  1. i would also think a knee smash with a low lead leg side kick followed by a palm heel to chin. i guess i'm curious to know what opening moves could be the most effective in terms of damage and speed. I realize that conflict should be avoided at all costs, but i'm still just hypothezing on instances where it can't be
  2. ahh, sorry for typing errors. I hit submit before proofreading.
  3. I know theres been forums on favorite tricks of the trade, combos, etc. I'm curious to know what would your opening move be in a live situation. I'm not looking for responses like "talk it out, avoid conflict, etc". imagine the situation has escalated and there's no choice to but to fight. i'm sure some pople will respond by sdaying to wait and see what the opponent would do, but supposing you want the ball in your court, you dictate the fight, and the situation is ugly and unavoidable. i'm a fan of a lead hammerfist to the nose, followed by a 4 knuckle strike to throat.., or a headbutt smash to the face. let's discuss some of your opening moves in a live situation, where force is definitely required.
  4. he means not hitting with 100% power. i wouldnt want to hit my classmates with everything I have to the nface, but i can still make light contact there to let them know they were hit.

  6. i find having all the katas in Shorin Ryu, as well as all the weapons forms can be a bit overwhelming, but you also have to realize that once you have them learned it gives you a bgger arsenal to work from
  7. sabaki sounds interesting. never heard of that term or suri ashi. i'll look more into it. thanks

  14. what exactly is kyokushin, full contact fighting?
  15. glad to hear your decision
  16. fake sparring? what do you mean
  17. i agree with G95. i would thinki a higher ranking student would be better than doing this than a beginner. also, some of the katas like the Passai's and Kusanku's build on each other. so i think a video could be beneficial. you could always learn the pattern and tweak it later. a live person is till always the best bet, but I think a video can be useful. also as astudy guide. another good thing to do is to tape yourself doing the katas. tehn watch the tape of of yourself and compare it to the instructor on the video. this si where you can learn some of the subelt things that may need fixing
  18. yeah, that dude is a beast!
  19. with long legs being ables to smach ina knee, how would kicking seem impractical?
  20. go with karate. Or perhaps a school that offers karate with other eapons classes during the week. its not exactly kendo, but you will benefit from both types of training. Shorin-ryu particularly has a variety of weapons to learn, so i woould highly recomend taking that route
  21. i think it varies from teacher to teacher. not real sure though the difference
  22. I enjoy the application and control you get from kata, but I personally get more out of a charge in kumite as i like the physical contact.
