  1. does anyone have the japanese calligraphy symol for "sensei" I'm doing a portrait for someone as a gift and would like to include that symbol in my piece. thanks jn
  2. ive also noticed that when i was 15, 16, people had more negative comments than when I got older. i think younger people just like to talk trash Exactly! And unfortunately some don't outgrow it.
  3. nervousness is real common. i used t hae performing solo, but as you practice at home, they will become musch easier in terms of mermorizing and execution. dont only train in the dojo on class days, the elite warrior trains every day. if you do your katas ona daily basis, it won;t matter which wall your facing, but repetition is crucial. good luck.
  4. yeah some people will think its cool, but you'll have just as many morons. its annoying, but it could be because deep down they want to. people always tend to make fun or be cruel to things they don;t understand. i guess you just got to roll with punches. it used to get to me when i was younger, but now it just rolls off, but yeah i've heard sevral Hi-ya's...and the infamous karate chop. even had people do the danial-san crane. just keep training hard and carry your self with with that air of confidence and take the complements with the jabs. for the most part though, i don't bring it up in front of people I don't know well.
  5. Sho Kasugi (SP?) back in the day got nice on some people.
  6. YES!!!. people still familiar with the last dragon. just the name Bruce LeRoy cracks me up everytime
  7. for every article admonishing it, you can find others to counter its effectivness. it is a very effective tool for not only punches, but knifehands, kicks, hammerfists, etc.
  8. tell her top stop guilt tripping or you'll do it again. just kidding.
  9. i only wear my gi in class. shorts and tee or sweatpants when at home.
  10. chuck norris was the heavyweight kickboxing champion. i think you'd have to be pretty good to accomplish that
  11. a makiwara attached to a wall still isnt going to have the giver as one ona post.
  12. even in katas when chambeering both hands to hips. it is not simply "preparing for the next strike", its usually some type if hand or wrist trap, bringing them in, followed by a devastating blow
  13. good luck. also, practice your technique and shadow box and work on bag relentlessly. it'll make your techniques come more naturally in sparring situations. almost like a reflex. when your at ease with your ability and have confidence in your techniques. it makes spartring that much easier when the time comes
  14. yeah, no since in aggravating the injury and making it worse. take time to heal.
  15. oh..and also Chuck Liddel...not sure how to spell his last name. he's a Kenpo guy with blazing hand speed and sis a powerful striker. he's the newest UFC winner.
  16. cung le is newr guy who is involved in pride fighting. he trains very intensly and if you can find any videos on him, i think you'll be impressed.
  17. its treated lumber post, 8feet long, 4 inches in diameter. it should be sawed dowen the middle so that the base is 4 inches, and the tope tapers off to .75" ..almost 1 inch. when runk in the ground, the strikciking oart should be about chest high. the reason the post is tapered is to allow for some spring and give when struck. i definitly recomend having one.
  18. yeah buddy..being 14 is a pain. i'm not being sarcastic, when i was 14 i hated life at certain points. i have 3 brothers, 2 older and 1 younger and no what a hassle they can be. but you'll get though it if you just dont give up. i'm now 27 and doing well, but just rememebr having some tough yeas in my early teens. as for working out, a really good and cheap excvecise you can do is jumping rope. itbuilds endurance, trims fat, helps with coordination, tones muscle, etc. start out and just jump 1 minute straight, and take a minute and half off. then another full minute, minute and half break. do 3 dsets of this in the morning and at night. then cut your break to one minute rest. after about a week, do 2 minutes straight, with one minute rest..3 sets, morning and night. you'll improve quickly. you want to keep it up until you can go 4 sets, 3 minuts straight, with a minute rest in between. it takes about 20 minutes, and if you do it monring and night, your results will come quickly. thats how boxers train and i'm sure you see most of them are in real good shape. as for your eating habits..mom might be buying the food..but you can tell her to trade the chips for carrots and coke for milk or water. also..as some people have said...learn to cook. cooking, like everyhting else, will improve with practice. as you said you smped tons of the time on the computer...you shoudlbt have any difficulty finding easy recipes online...or forums discussing cooking made easy. about being so tired, your diet is a big contributer of how much energy you have. think of your body as a machine and you wanna put the best fuel in it possible. also..dont overtrain. have one day a week off. hope some of this helps. i know its rough, but you can do it buddy. take care
  19. fear and nervousness is common, and a good emotion, but do not let it take control. i used to get majo butterflies but then once i started, felt fine. i don't really know what to say as far as advice goes, but keep going and face your fears. i've heard several pro athletes say they'd also get terrible butterflies before games, but once the game starts in all sort of goes away. i think a little fear and nervousness can make you more aware, just don't let it overcome you.
  20. men and women spar each other in our school
  21. i have one i just recently built and is in my back yard. i didnt want just a random post up from the ground, so i did some landscaping around the base of my patio and the akiwara and planted hostas, japense ferns, a variety of flowes etc. i work on about 4 or 5 tiomes of week. mine is a treated lumber post fropm lowes- about 10.00 cut at an the angle to .75" thick at the top, tapering down to 4" at the bottom, sunk 3 feet in the ground with bracers for support. the wood was sanded and stained cherry. the top had foam rubber attatched to it, then wrapped very tightly with clothesline rope. I wanted to makiwara to be functional, traditional, and look good in my yard..as i am quite particular about my lawn and gardens. if you doa search on makiwara construction, you'll find some good links. i highly recomend it as it is an incredible training tool.
  22. yeah i think he's relaying his info wrong. never heard of it
  23. yeah being big and flexibe is still possible. i'm not a big wrestling (WWE) fan, but that guy ROb Van Damn is pretty big and i've seen him do the 2- chair splits like jean Claude. look him up on google if you wanna see him. point is, you can be big and muscular and still flexible
  24. point sparring also stresses striking with precision and accuracy which can defintly be beneficial to a real fight
  25. look how big muhammid ali was...he was quite fast
