something of interest
Chaz replied to GTF's topic in Kung Fu, JKD, Wing Chun, Tai Chi, and Chinese Martial Arts
SCAM! Anyone that knows anything about chinese, especially shaolin, history knows that there goal is to preserve their secrets, not spread them around the world, completely ridiculous.... -
Aikido is actually the only japanese art that appeals to me. I belive strongly in highly fluid and dynamic arts, I've read books about it but have never practiced. My reasons for not taking it have to do with its effectivness for self-defense. In my opinion of course...

Home study black belt course- works for me
Chaz replied to shotokanwarrior's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I doubt you'll learn anything but the surface of whatever MA it is your studying at home. I don't think Black Belt can truly be achieved on your own I'm sorry... -
This training method was pioneered in early shaolin training.

I think belts are important not for the student, but for the teacher more than anything. It is important if your school is big, and like I said before. It gives people something to work for that don't always have a direction. (Especially for kids!) I don't think it's a bad thing either way. Even in ancient Wing Chun schools were known to give white belts and then your accomplishment was measured by how hard you worked and the belt slowly getting dirter from your blood sweat and tears. It's the same concept with colored belts, just modernized.

I get asked this alot, I usually tell them to punch me. All I have to do is suck um' in to impress them... They just go Whoa! thats scary...
-
I think punching someone straight in the head is kind of an amature thing to do though dont you think? I usually go for an open palm under the jaw or to the nose or throat. The only time I really punch to the head is with a one-knuckle to the temple. Personally my favorite technique that involves the head is a good-ol rakeing to the eyes!

Exactly how hard is it to fight a Capoiera master?
Chaz replied to username9's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
What makes him special? Wouldn't it be extremely difficult to beat a master in any art? I'm sure it would be hard, but that goes for all people that are dedicated enough to earn the title of master... -
Took the words right outta my mouth...

I've been keeping a journal now on my own time for about a year, it's definately valuable when I look back on it and read through it... I like to keep a record of what I've accomplished.

I live in California and shuttle my snake spear in a bag back and fourth everywhere I go, including my highschool, and no one seems to care. Though, I wouldn't recommend pulling it out in a parking lot and doing forms/katas with it...
