  1. Oh, and if ya don't have colors, what are the colors on your patches, or are you known for wearing any specific gi colors for your style/school/system?
  2. Hey everyone, I'm going to be competing internationally here in June, and I will be needing a very nice gi to go with me. I've heard a lot about tokaido gis, are there any other nice ones out there? Currently I have a heavyweight Tiger Claw Hayashi Gi. It is nice, but I would like a very very nice gi to take along with me on my trip. Any preferences for those of you out there who own nice gis? Oh, and I'm looking for white.
  3. I was just curious to see if everybody's dojos have a certain "club color/s". Mine happen to be red, gold, and black.
  4. Wow you only practice 10 katas? In Shotokan? Or is that only for the testing and you practice more..because I know that shotokan generally practices about 20 something katas.
  5. For a roundhouse, it works if you just shift your weight back, push his leg around and hit him with a haito (ridge hand) or richen uchi (backfist strike) int he head. For a sweep...JUMP! For a side kick, his kick has to come back to him sometime doesn't it? As it is snapping back to him, follow it back and counter..touch-and-go.
  6. Get him in a grapevine, make him tap, get his attention, give him your number... hahaha
  7. I'm a nondenominational Christian, and the only effect that it has on my training is God helps me through it, and sees to it that I stay safe.
  8. Welcome here! Happy training and I hope you get a lot of info out of these forums!
  9. Well hi there, welcome to the forums!
  10. Welcome here!
  11. well...you know you could always just buy one..lol but anyways, I wouldn't have the first clue how to make one..sorry.
  12. Actually the nunchukus were used as a rice flail, not the sai.
  13. I think the worst is any movie that stars a bunch of chinese people that can't match the voices up with the lips.
  14. Well, I've done this in jujitsu many times, and let me just say this: If he gets on top of you, you have gotten yourself into a huge mess. So normally, big fat guys are also very slow...so you can generally always get them with speed. Depending upon how big you are, they may or may not have more power than you, so don't let them slug on you..get in, and get out. You know the saying....it's old but it IS true...The bigger they are.... you finish the rest
  15. Yeah that kind of behaviour is totally uncalled for, and in no way, shape, or form should have happened at all, and there is no justification for it. If he wanted to teach him a lesson then he could have done it another way. Karate is a way of life, and what kind of example is the instructor setting ot the rest of his students? If somebody disagrees with you beat the living crap out of them? nuh uh...that kind of stuff doesn't float my boat.
  16. Well good luck testing...hope ya pass and have fun with those katas. P.S. The Heian katas are the same as our pinans...only probably with a few minor variations.
  17. You're right on the dot ...don't drag it on, but if they punch you, punch back and punch hard, don't overdue it, see this is generally where my jujitsu takes place...if they punched me, I would punch them back and probably attempt to take them to the ground and get them into some joint lock until they cried like my little b-word...unless of course they had friends. That's when ya just get the Russian mob involved.
  18. My first two belts were the nicest, most broken-in belts I've ever owned..my white belt (had for 6 months and trained hard with) and my yellow belt (had for 3 months, but trained harder in)...they were both the perfect size...the reason you probably like your white belt so much is because generally white belts are a lot thinner and of less material, making them easier to become flimsy (which might I add I love about a belt ) When ya get into higher grade belts, they generally become thicker and made of better amterial..or at least the ones I wear do. When ya get to black belt, they get to become any size you want to make them, generally thicker than the rest so they are more noticeable, making them harder to break in, but well worth the wait.
  19. Well if you have no other choice, don't get too fancy...if you can close them up, slam them to the ground, and hold them there until somebody breaks it up, but if you have no ground-fighting game, then if I were you I would also go for a palm to the nose, or just a straight punch to the nose. Or...always hit the windpipe...then when they bend over knee 'em.
  20. COLOR OF BELT KATAS WEAPONS WHITE 1-2 YELLOW 2-4 BLUE 4-6 GREEN 5-7 PURPLE 7-8 1 BROWN 9-10 2 BROWN + 1 TIP 11-12 3 BROWN + 2 TIPS 13-14 4 Black 15-20 5+ The names of our kata and the order in which they are taught/learned are as follows: Fu-Ku-Gata-Ich Fu-Ku-Gata-Ni Pinan Sho-dan Pinan Ni-dan Pinan San-dan Pinan Yon-dan Pinan Go-dan Saisan Jiian Bassadai Bassasho Kanku-dai Kanku-sho Empi Go-Ju-Shi-Ho-Sho Go-Ju-Shi-Go-Dai Shinto Hangetsu Unsu Sainchin
  21. For kicks there are many many defenses . I'm about 60% kicker 40% puncher. I love to kick, but I also love to learn how to defend them. One thing you can do is simply slide back, the kick has to come back at them sometime doesn't it? Well, when they snap their kick back to them follow that leg back and hit them, or give them a kick of your own. Personally, I love roundhouses, beause when they come at my, I simply swing the kick away and shoot in with a haito (ridge hand) or a richen uchi (back fist strike).
  22. Actually I wear the cloth pads...I have had this pair for about 2 years now and they are still holding strong, and whenever they get sweaty, they are washer and dryer safe. I wear the arm and hand protector, and then for legs I wear the shin and foot protector. It is great stuff..and comes in white and black. I've yet to try the vinyl...but I might when I go to Ireland to compete.
  23. Hahaha ok I was definitely having fun for a bit. But no, in all seriousness it's not real. It's just a made-up move that they do in the movies.
  24. Well, actually..they do monitor everything we...that is the newsletter yearly club of the shaolin temple..do, we have to wear these martial arts tracking bracelets, that's how they identify us, and they monitor everything we do. So see..I told you where you could learn it, but if you don't want to take my advice..ya might never know.
  25. Yeah...well it wasn't that hard, i mean the guy was amazing, and on top of teaching me the 5 point palm exploding heart technique he also taught me the celestial qi penetration, the supernatural monk neck-snap, and he also taught me the explosive chopstick chop.
