No problem at all.

No problem Flank. I hope you have fun at your martial arts club, what style is it? I know you'll learn to become mentally strong in the arts and on top of being mentally strong your phsyical character and knowledge of self-defense will skyrocket.

Wow being from texas you'd think you'd be a rangers fan.

Take one at a seminar or while testing so you can see him in action and he won't see you

Yeah the white belt just means how many posts you have, it'll change onc eyou get more posts. As for the fan, we learned it at camp, and a friend of mine knows it, but it is extremely long. A few people at my dojo know the fan, I will try and ask around for some help with that. Personally I do sais.

martial arts and TV

You're not the only one. -
Just about all the time, we spar half of the time then do techniques and kata the other half.

also the most basic move is to put your back on the ball, and just roll along it longways.

Here we are, look at his hands...they are in the shape of a leopard's paw. It is effective, but then again so is a punch.http://www.mandarinkungfu.com/images/leopardstance2.jpg

It's when you bend your knuckles at the middle joint and hit with that knuckle. Hang on and I'll go get a picture of it.

Not wise at all! You have a major possibility of tearing or ripping something. I always get to class early and stretch..you should do this too...we warm-up with basic movements, punches, and other phsyical activity, but we rarely stretch before class, so I'll normally do it before...and most of the time after. It's important to do this before and after, once for the warmup, and afterwards for the cooldown. It is true you won't have time to stretch on the street, but also you probably won't be throwing crescent kicks and backfists on the street either, so...it is not wise to not stretch...always stretch when you can! Plus, the more flexible you become now, the easier a fight will be on the street if you get into one.

I can only train about twice a week, but I do workout as well. Sit-ups, pushups, weight lifting, and lots of running and leg work.

I agree..I got into a car accident from somebody ramming me in the back. I got back whiplash, and my lower back was hurting pretty badly. I went to the chriropractor, a few adjustments later, I was A-OK.

Options
1kickKO replied to n3wt's topic in Choosing a Martial Art, Comparing Styles, and Cross-Training
What do you want out of martial arts? The discipline? To learn how to fight? For tournaments and competitions? The history? Let us in on these details and we can help you out in further detail. A few tips for finding a good dojo, is most instructors hav one free lesson, and if th ey don't, they allow you to watch. Call each one and find out if they have a free lesson and if not if they do let you watch, and if so go and take one lesson from each place, or go watch one lesson...it will come naturally to you which one you want to train in. Things to look for are the quality of the intructor, is he nice, is everybody else there nice, is the atmosphere a good place, etc..? -
Ok, some sparring tips: Touch and go- if somebody throws something at you, blcok it, as soon as your block that, follow it back tot hem and score with something of yours 3-or-more - Always throw three or more techniques, not jsut 1, not just 2, throw multiple combos to overthrow your opponent and score. Be quick- Nothing I can say about this but be on our toes, and ready to go. If he can't catch you, he can't hit you. Never move in straight lines- EVER. Straight lines creates an opportunity for your oponent to just sidestep...so do this, move to angles. If your opponent comes at you throwing a combo and rushes you, step off to their backside, this leaves their back open for you to kick/hit/score on while they still have to turn a full 180 degrees to hit/kick you back.

Students who don't want to learn just need guided in the right direction.Yelling doesn't always help, although as everybody else said...discipline does. If somebody disrupts your class, tell themt hat this is the way your sensei taught you to do it, and if they have a problem then they can go to him. Or you oculd just pull them aside and tell them in all honesty that they need to be quiet, or else you will beat the living hell out of them..ok just kidding about that part...but in all seriousness tell them that it is rude to disrupt class and if they have a problem they can ask somebody else.

well, you'd be surprised how far a simple "pinch" on the inner thighs can go if you're sitting down and he takes your lunchbox. If he hasn't grown fully matured yet..then he's just going to be the same way. I think the best thing for you to do would be to find a martial arts club at your university, and learn some self-defense...you know, just as a measure of getting around it in case it ever does get phsyical, because to me pushing is physical, and you never know how much it will just escalate. Unless your Univ. is a big place and you can avoid him, the only other option you have is standing up to him. but if not, then take the martial arts man! It will teach you many things
