My instructor tells us to do betwen 200-500 reps when working on a singe movement or posture in our form. Repitition is essential for properly learning any art and ingraining the art into you. It also can give you a great workout.

chi to boost testosterone to aid in workouts

Nope sorry. -
I'm goingto respectfully disagree Ted T. If you have been trained from a good teacher, you can start using some of the basic aspects of the form for combat soon after you learn them. As far as mastery goes, that can take many years to a lifetime to learn. As far as them fighting other Tai Chi guys, If one has learned Tai Chi well it can be used to successfully defend one against any martial art effectively. Usually the one with the most skill and who is having the better day will come out on top. I hope I never have to use Tai Chi in self defence but if I did, I am confident that I could hold my own with a person of the same skill level from any of the other martial arts.

Circular vs. Linear
dtstiachi replied to TBlow's topic in Choosing a Martial Art, Comparing Styles, and Cross-Training
My grandmaster in Tai Chi told us that when one gets to the higher levels, one will move both circular and linear at the same time. Comments? -
point taken SevenStar, I will try to be clearer in future explanations.

In our Tai Chi warmups, we do an excercize that "massages our internal organs and helps to keep them in proper alignment and will realign them if necessary to their proper place." The excercize feels good, but I just wonder about the internal organs getting out of wack. Thanks for any imput you have.

I like the idea of going to get something to drink and talk about life. -
ninjas or samuris?
dtstiachi replied to JLee's topic in Choosing a Martial Art, Comparing Styles, and Cross-Training
Depends, do you want to have honor or no honor? -
Both have practical martial applicatins. I Practice Yang style, but I have seen some Chen stylist I wouldn't want to mess with. Me, I'm in favor of the Yang style because that is what I know. My grandaster at the school is a master of 5 differnent styles, and he chooses to teach us Yang Style and he teaches us the combat applications of EVERY movement/posture in the form. Hope this helps.

Your Art
dtstiachi replied to sansoouser's topic in Choosing a Martial Art, Comparing Styles, and Cross-Training
Yang Style Tai Chi Chuan' When taught as a martial art it can be very effective against any style. I hope I never have to use the applications of the form as I have seen how they can hurt somone very badly if not kill them. -
soft vs. hard
dtstiachi replied to BKJ1216's topic in Choosing a Martial Art, Comparing Styles, and Cross-Training
Both have their strengths. Wouldn't the fighter who is bette prepared and knows his art better be the victor if all other outside circumstances were irrelevant? -
If one can control the mind, he can control the body.

what happens if you hit someone with a palm heel strike? Will this injure your hand or does it depend on the target (hard/soft) etc?

Practice my art an hour every day and post for an hour to total two hours of practice daily
-
Optimum for me is 2 hours daily. I usually get at least an hour daily outside of the two classes a week of instruction. Worst case senario. 3 times a week/ hour a day (outside of class)
